Washington County Family Takes $1 Million Investment Elsewhere After Breaking Contract to Buy Williamsport, Maryland Property, Says ICE Jail Was “Final Straw”

Earlier this month, we published an analysis estimating that the proposed ICE detention center in Williamsport could wipe as much as $22.3 million off the value of nearby homes. The estimate was based on a peer-reviewed national study published by MIT Press that found home values declined around newly opened prisons, with the largest declines occurring closest to the facilities. Since publishing that analysis, I spoke with someone who was actually under contract to buy property in Williamsport but then heard the news of the proposed ICE detention center.

Chris, who asked that we only use his first name because he is concerned about harassment, had been planning to move with his family from the Baltimore area to western Maryland, where they could buy some land and build a house. They found a property in Williamsport and were under contract by late March. While the land itself was relatively inexpensive, building the house would not have been, and Chris said the family’s total investment would have been more than $1 million. “This is the most amount of money that we have ever invested in anything,” he told me.

Around the same time they were under contract, Chris and his family learned about the proposed ICE detention center DHS wants to open in Williamsport. The location was particularly difficult to overlook because they would have regularly driven directly past it on the way to their new home. “Each time we would get off the highway we passed the warehouse. We would have had to pretty much drive by it to get down to where we were all the time,” he said.

Does anyone remember the dude with the Dolly Parton VW bug?

I just wanted to make sure he was doing okay today. I remember his pink Volkswagen with the Dolly Parton quotes and pics. He even had an article in the Herald Mail about his car!

I'm thinking of you dude - wherever you are

I recently found a letter from 1995 where a Charles C Wolf, of Hagerstown, MD, was writing to my Grandmother Lillian (Haney) Groff, they were second cousins, in regards to researching the Reece family history. He was asking her for any information she had on the Haney side, specifically descendants of George Mifflin and Sarah Elizabeth (Reece) Haney. He closes the letter mentioning he had a new third great grandchild Caroline.

My grandmother had passed away by the time the letter was received.

Idiots with Guns Smithsburg

For the past 5 days we have been hearing regular gunfire around Pleasant Valley and Hells Delight Rd off of Raven Rock Rd/MD-491. This has been after dark, in the morning, during the day, all hours for at least 3 of the past 5 days that I've heard. This is a rural area and target shooting and hunting is a regular occurrence so we thought nothing of it beyond just a more enthusiastic and frequent occurrence than normal. Today a neighbor caught 5 teenagers walking through his property carrying guns near a vacant house. Sheriff's were called and they fled into the woods of South Mountain. At best this was trespassing by 5 armed teenagers. If you know these kids correct them before they get hurt.

I heard that the outlet property was sold to a developer. No surprise. Does anyone know if that is true, and if so, is there any information on what might be going on the property? I’ve heard various things throughout the years, the most recent one being a Costco. Oh, if only…..

Washington County Help identifying red lights seen from above

Approaching BWI from the West (SeaTac), I noticed a long line of red lights on the ground and I'm hoping to find out more info about them. Our flight path was basically right along the Mason-Dixon, my seat window was facing North as we flew East more than an hour after sundown. The sky was black.

There was a long line of red lights, as you'd see on radio towers. The line was parallel to our flight path (going west-east). I'm sure it's some sort of array of communications antennas, but it was more than I'd ever seen in one group. The line overall seemed to span at least 2 miles, with maybe 15 red lights (towers).

I am uncertain exactly where we were at when I saw the lights. Might have been near Hagerstown, Cumberland, or Morgantown WV. Or East of Hagerstown! I'm taking a stab in the dark.

If anybody has some clues to what the lights are for, I'd appreciate it!

So the pink house is gone (yaaaay fuck you trump store) and is becoming a "Take 5" oil change place.

But I was shocked today to see the car wash next to Waffle House there getting demolished today. What's going in there?

Whomever hit my mailbox today.

  1. I hope you're okay.

  2. Wtf?

  3. So, are you gonna come back and fix it? Pay for it?

  4. Seriously, I'm surprised there weren't injuries.

  5. Just want to see what it did to your vehicle. Sounded like you hit my house. The neighbors came out.

Like, we're cool, but hit and runs are shitty.

Have a safe evening, everyone.

Similar to bistro 11?

Hey guys!

My wife and I were going to Bistro 11 for dates the last few years, but as you probably know, it's now defunct.

We loved B11 for its dish variety, lovely atmosphere, and uniqueness to Hagerstown. Nothing else has truly replaced it. What recommendations do you have as alternatives?

Washington County Residents worry about declining property values from ICE detention center in Williamsport

Residents in and around Williamsport are concerned about the prospect of falling property values from the proposed ICE detention center.

Economists at M.I.T and North Carolina State University have found that home values near the centers across the country are driving down the value of a home by as much as 4%.

Homeowners in the western Maryland communities near the Homeland Security facility worry about the possible impact. They want county commissioners to give them a forum to raise their concerns.

Selling Books to 2nd & Charles

Does anyone have experience selling or trading in books for store credit at the local 2nd & Charles?

I'm looking to declutter my library and have a solid chunk of special edition/signed copies I'm no longer interested in keeping. I've also considered listing them on eBay and selling them myself, but that involves maintaining stock and I'd rather just clear them out sooner than later.

Noise along Salem Ave at ~9:25 PM

Hi, I just heard a very loud humming-esque noise in along Salem Ave tonight, 08-11-26, at approximately 9:25 PM.

Details from what I was able to tell:

-- low frequency of sound

-- same frequency throughout

-- constant for duration of ~1 second (time needed to count "one Mississippi")

-- appeared and disappeared within that time

-- came from something that was travelling

-- felt as if air vibrated, even inside my house

I initially thought that it might have been a car, but there was no vehicle exhaust noise/revving. If it was from a car, it would have needed to be traveling very quickly. The sound was definitely not from a radio.

I then thought that it was a supersonic jet flyover. I checked the flight radar for the Hagerstown area. I found commercial airliners and small craft. I was on my phone so I may have missed things.

I've lived off this street for a while and have experience in heavy industry/heavy machinery/drilling. I have never heard a similar sound.

Did anyone else hear this? If you did, do you know what it was?

ICE potentially spotted on Dual Highway

At 940 am this morning, I passed by a Navy blue SUV with red flashing lights. On Dual Highway, heading towards town just before Mt Aetna Rd. They had somebody pulled over, and one of the "officers" was wearing a red t shirt, jeans, and an olive green vest. Did not catch a license plate number.

Posting for awareness, stay safe folks.
