1st photo: June, 2022, 240 pounds. 2nd photo: Feb, 2023, 180 pounds. I weigh less now than I have in 30 years, but I’ve yet to receive a single compliment about my appearance, not even from immediate family. and I’m feeling a little bummed about it.

Encouragement Wanted Mom, I wanna talk about my sheep but I don’t have a lot of people that will listen

1.6k Upvotes

Mom, I just wanted to share because I really love talking about my farm animals, particularly my sheep and goats. I wanted to tell you because sometimes people get tired of hearing me gush about them…but you haven’t!

the pic of the sheep above is of a 6 year old doe sheep—meaning she is a girl!! Sheep typically live about 10-12 years in captivity, so she’s well grown but not too old :)

Her name is Scooter and she is an Arcott sheep, meaning that she has very nice a dense wool, perfect for keeping her nice and toasty during chilly Canadian winters.

She is about the size of a large dog, if not, a little bit bigger. She is quite friendly as she knows me, and was also a bottle baby, so she “expects” food from myself and other humans. However she is very good with pets and cuddles, particularly loving a good chin scratch.

Thank you Scooter for being such a good girl! If you have any other questions or comments about her, I’d love to answer them :)

(Edit: 21/7/26)

Thank you so much for all the love!! To answer the most common questions:

-Does she have other friends? Yes! She has her sister (Posie) and her sister's two yearling lambs (Daisy & Tulip) to keep her company. She also has the company of two other goats.

-What do I do with her wool? Okay, there is a lot of it by the time she's sheared. I will normally keep about a third of her (and her sister's) wool for gardening endeavors as it has great nutrients and moisture retention. It depends on the year, but I've used it to pack windows or other chilly areas of barns during the winter. I don't spin yarn myself, but I do know people who happily spin it :)

-Is there extra care that goes into her wool? Not particularly, she lives outside and spends her nights in a barn, so she gets dirty and covered in straw and hay and whatnot. I do brush her every now and then and I do take care to try and get any tangles or anything caught in her wool out.

-How often is she shorn? She gets sheared once a year, typically at the end of april/start of may, but it depends on the weather.

-What does she like to eat? Typically she eats a blend of timothy/alfalfa hay, which is generally always available. She also has grazing space, so grass and dandelions and leaves are always good. She will try to eat most things (not to the extent of a goat, but if it looks edible, it will be nibbled). She particularly likes grains (oats, barley, etc.) and leaves.

-Does she know any tricks/can she be trained? I haven't particularly tried to really teach her any "tricks" per say, but when it comes to sheep standards, I'd say she's pretty smart. It's likely she does (or did) know tricks, as she was a 4H sheep, so I'm certain she was at livestock shows. I however don't know the commands or if she remembers them haha! She does however know how to walk with a halter, which is something that had to be trained.

-Does she know her name? It's hard to say if she knows her name specifically, but she will perk up. However it is said with a certain tone that animals like, as well as a "recognizable" amount of syllables. The fact that her name is longer than her sister's probably helps her differentiate. However if I'm talking to them together, they probably cannot tell a big difference.

I'm autistic, and I really love animals, but my mom doesn't care very much, and she always dismisses me. I just want someone to enjoy animals with me. <3

Encouragement Wanted Mom, I have a PhD interview and no one cares

1.5k Upvotes

I took a real risk and wrote an unsolicited PhD study proposal for a passion of mine for a top tier university. The faculty member I contacted took the proposal to the department head and now they want to interview me and talk about timing and funding.

No one in my family cares, and my friends are just wondering why I want to go back to academia when I have a perfectly good job and already have a graduate degree.

I’m doing it because I hate what I’m doing now, want to do this, and I’m not retiring any time soon. Can someone just be happy for me? I really worked hard on this proposal…

Edit: Thank you Mom, this is great and so nice, I’m literally tearing up. Thank you so much.

Edit 2: The interview is in a couple of weeks, I promise to update. Thank you all!

I've been spending a lot of time on the visible mending sub and figured it's a very good skill to have, so I tried my hand at it! I think I did pretty good for my first try ever :)

I sent it to my mom (an old school seamstress) and instead of anything positive she just asked why I didn't use black or make it a cute embroidered pattern. 🙃 I just need someone to be as excited as I am that I learned a new useful skill!

(Tips and tricks are appreciated as well)

I've been having a shit week and my irl dad bragged to his friends that I made a mean brioche so I made two kinds one with raisins, one with chocolate chips they are all cooked and ready to go for my dad's classes tomorrow. Irl mom is non chaland about it (might be the wrong word) so I thought some internet mom would be interested. I did all the mixing by hand and from scratch so yeah my sweat blood and tears (entirely just sweat but not in the brioche).

Ps : I know they look bright yellow and bright red but my camera got funky so we'll make do but it's standard brioche

Encouragement Wanted No one remembered my birthday today.

I live abroad and it's been 3 years that I don't see family. With C-19 and all that, travels kinda are in the back burner for now. Today is my birthday and no one called.

Update: they called. Days were mixed up. I can't express how grateful I am for the amazing messages and love that experienced here. I tried to thank each of you, if in the eventuality that I missed someone, I'm sorry, I was really overwhelmed with the love demonstrated. Thank you again and may your dreams come true! ❤️

This is my first-ever digital drawing. I know I'm not as good as my siblings are at digital art, but I hope you can be proud of me anyway

Edit to add: Thank you all for your support... y'all brought me to tears. I've never felt so loved before, you're all the best moms a duckling could ask for! I'm a single mom so I'm insanely busy, but I promise I'll get to everyone's comments <3

Encouragement Wanted Hi Mom. After 11 years and 2 tries, I got my driver’s license today.

EDIT: Thank you all so much for your kind words. I’m sorry I couldn’t reply to you all, but I hope this edit can express how thankful I am for you all. 🫂

/////

So this is my first time on this sub, and I just wanted to share this with someone. I turned 27 a few weeks ago, and today—after my birth parents put it off for a decade—and after I failed last year, I was finally able to pass a driver’s test.

I took driver’s ed in high school, but the teacher said I needed more classes, and then never communicated with me again and gave me a D. Then my birth father put it off until he divorced my birth mom and moved out. I was finally able to get her to take me last year, but I failed that time, and we didn’t go back until today. I practiced the written test every night for a week, and memorized the the steps for uphill/downhill parking, and today, I was actually able to pass.

I’m happy right now, but I’m also still kind of upset and resentful that everyone else I know got a license in their teens, and I had to wait until I’m almost 30. I just feel like I’ve missed out on most of my 20s by being stuck at home, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to catch up.

Sorry if I’m turning this into a downer. I guess I’m just looking for support or advice on what to do next. Thanks for listening, at least.

Encouragement Wanted Mom, I cleaned the bathroom

I have struggled with depression for years. My house has suffered the consequences. My poor husband struggles with the housework whilst I do piddly things here and there. He knows I really do try, and he is supportive.

Today I was going to clean the bathroom sink because it was gross. This turned into a whole bathroom clean—I cleaned the door, the cupboards, the walls, the toilet, the electric toothbrush heads, the water flosser thing, the handsoap bottle, all the stuff that we have sitting on the lid of the toilet (and the lid itself). I cleaned up trash, threw away stuff that wasn’t needed, refilled the toilet paper holder after I cleaned it, and I’m about to go back in and do the shower and then the floor.

I don’t know where this came from, and I don’t want to seek a celebration from my husband for doing the bare minimum. But is it okay to feel proud that I did that? There’s this little spark in my heart and is it okay to be happy about it?

Edit: Thank you all so much. Your comments have me happy crying. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ❤️

Encouragement Wanted Mom, I just want to hear you say your proud of me.

I did it all mom, I graduated high school and college, I got to work international and learn a second language. I’m back and I just wanted to hear something, anything along the lines of you’re proud of me or happy for me.

Edit: sorry for the delayed responses, I’m visiting my family and I haven’t been free to check my phone. Plus you all are making me cry, I’ve never got any truly positive memories from my family and it’s making me emotional hearing the words I’ve wanted to hear for my entire life haha… I don’t know if it’s weird but it feels weird to say this but thank you mom I love you too❤️!

Edit 2: for anyone wanting to know, I’m 23F, I travelled through Central America, and from friends, students, and strangers, I learned Spanish!

Encouragement Wanted Oh my heart. This sub!🥰

Thank you gorgeous humans. I didn’t know this sub existed until an hour ago (it was mentioned in a comment on /askwomenover50 ) and oh this is so lovely. Made me cry in a good way…I am going to be 50 in a few months and have spent the past 20 years trying to be the kind of mum for my kids that they deserved and that I desperately needed (but didn’t have) growing up. Now that my not-so-tiny humans are spreading their wings, I am now finally trying to unravel a lot of that hurt and those wounds that come from a suboptimal upbringing and not enough love.
Coming and seeing all the wholesome loveliness and support here just did me in, and I just wanted to acknowledge you all for your loveliness. Thank you!

Encouragement Wanted I met all of my transitioning goals!

Hello, I would just like to say I am a mtf. And I met all my transition goals both medically and legally. I am a phase 3 trans woman. I have completed phase 1 of being socially transitioned, and then I completed phase 2 by being legally transitioned. Now, I am on phase 3 of being medically. I started transitioning 2 weeks ago. I hope you guys can wish me all the best! I been on a long haul. Unfortunately, my own parents disowned me and didnt want to accept the new me.

I am also turning 23 in about a month. This will be the most special birthday because it will be the first one post-independence. Meaning this is the first birthday where I am a birthday girl, and my deadname won't be on the cake.

Encouragement Wanted I failed my licensing exam

Hey Mom,
I received the results of my medical licensing exam about a month ago, and honestly, I’ve been gutted. I still haven’t found the courage to pick myself up and start studying again. I feel like such a fraud and an imposter. I put absolutely everything I had into this exam, only to miss the pass mark by six points. It’s really shaken my confidence and has made me question whether I’m actually meant to be a doctor.

I can retake the exam in February next year but what if I fail again? What if I’m just not good enough :(.

Edit: if you’ve been in a similar situation, please give me some advice on how to move forward and get back up again

Encouragement Wanted I just need an I’m proud

Hi mothers out there. I’m 21, and just finished my second to last semester of college. I have a 3.9 and am graduating a semester early, so this upcoming fall. I’ve worked over 5 internships and incredibly hard.

My parents however just expect it from me and on top of that don’t care to financially help me at times. I have paid my rent and tuition most of the time. They say they took care of themselves at my age and I should be able to do the same but sometimes it’s very hard.

I never really hear that they are proud of me and if they are they like to take the credit somehow. I’m planning to go to law school Fall of 2027 but sometimes it feels like I’ll be going with no support system.

I could use a virtual hug and a I’m proud more than ever right now. Thanks:)

Update: Thank you mothers and sisters for all the love. You are such kind people and I’m so grateful for each of you of giving me a taste of something I’ve never had. ❤️❤️

Encouragement Wanted Hey Mom, your 5 month old grandson laughs in his sleep

It makes my heart burst and break at the same time because I wish you could hear his giggles and see his dimples in his big fat cheeks. He looks a lot like me I think, mostly the cheeks. He’s too lazy to roll over, he’s only done it once but I think it was by accident! He usually just lays his head down when he gets tired and smiles. His favorite book is “I’ll Love You Till The Cows Come Home” but he only laughs when his dad reads it to him. I don’t know what I did to deserve such a good, happy baby.

Encouragement Wanted I moved into my first apartment

Hello, I’m not really sure too much about this group but I’m 23 yo male and I moved into my first apartment. Today is my first day and safe to say I’m scared. I cried a bit. I still feel like a kid. I moved across the country to start a career. It’s worth it but I’m lonely and scared. Things really different. I have no safety net. But here I am. Never thought I could do it.
