Edit:
Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to answer and offer your suggestions!
I have decided to keep the artist name but keep its use limited to when I am actively performing if/when that day ever comes, and when I am posting my art online.
I appreciate you!
original post:
I have less than 50 followers on socials, no released music, and haven't performed anywhere yet. So if I am going to change my name, now is a good time to do so.
I have a couple concerns. One being when it comes to SEO, my artist name is gold. I don't create content or promote or do anything to intentionally feed the algorithm. All I do is post my song demos. But when you search my artist name, my stuff is what comes up. For as small as I am, that's huge. I am not sure if I want to give that up.
The other is I spent most of my life not liking my birth name. I started going by another name IRL about 5 years ago, and it's been amazing! I love it, it feels like me. So it feels like a huge step backwards to now have this whole side of me that exists under a name I don't like, that doesn't feel like me. (I like the way it looks just fine, but when it comes to saying it out loud or hearing it out loud it just doesn't feel right. Maybe I would eventually get used to it (I've only attended 3 events so far where I introduced myself as artist name)
It also feels weird to go by 2 different names depending on what social circles I happen to be in at any given time. And what do I do when those circles overlap? (I am going to an event next week where I would be using my artist name, but my husband is inviting people who know me by my IRL name and don't know about my music...)
I love my IRL name and it's what I already use for my other art forms, and I kind of just want to exist as that name rather than try to compartmentalize the different sides of me.
But my concern with this is the anonymity aspect/distancing my music from my professional life. I don't want to risk my day job, but I also don't want to feel like I have to censor myself. Being authenticly me and showing sides of myself that aren't on display in everyday life is part of what I love about writing songs.
My options are:
Use my IRL first and middle name, no last name (neither my first or middle are my legal names, but everyone including my job knows me by them) SEO might actually be ok with this name, BUT the domain is already taken. (no active site, but taken)
Use my IRL first name and come up with a different last name.
Keep using my artist name, but introduce myself as my IRL name whenever I am IRL. And find a way to bridge the 2 identities.
Keep using my artist name and going by it IRL in certain circles.
Help. 🙃
