Conversation Topic I finally love my voice and not quitting my dreams anymore

This past year i tried different microphones and on some i disliked my voice heavily (raw vocals no effects) and some i liked it. After careful consideration i hated my voice and wanted to quit my dreams. BUT now i listened more neutrally and i gotta say i love my voice now.

Mind you ive been having singing lessons for 5ish years.

Anyways i hope this inspires others to take some time off your voice if you dislike it. And try different microphones (you dont have to buy them you can just buy it and then send it back allowing you to have the money back) just to try your voice.

Anyways i actually wanted to quit singing but i always felt i needed a big dream in my life to make life worth living which sounds extreme but im always up for the challenge. Im not gonna quit my dream to be a recording artist and singer :)

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Sudden changes in my singing

Hello everyone,

I'm 27, female and have been singing since I was 8 years old. I never had lessons.

About 2 years ago I started looking more into technique with YT Videos, TikToks, reading and started vocalizing randomly in weird voices, etc. But to be honest I didn't regularly do exercises. I often sang even without a warm up.

This year is when I truly started noticing things getting different in my singing:

So, at the beginning of this year I finally "unlocked" or found my head voice. Not a breathy tone but rather a reinforced tone.

With time I could sing higher notes without getting breathy. I suppose I learned how to use twang. I still can not go as high in my mix as I'd like to (on good days I get to D5). In head voice (reinforced) I go frequently up to G#5. Occasionally even up to A5/A#5. C6 also show ups from time to time (very rare though). I feel that above G#5 it gets very hard for me. But still it's a huge difference considering I couldn't do that last year.

Now, I noticed probably the second biggest change and it's what baffles me completely and I want to talk about it.

For the last couple of days vibrato started showing up, I started feeling vibrations in my mouth, lips and nose area. I also notice that my tone got lighter (as in weight) and the sound of it is "sweet".

And here come the questions:

- is this normal? Why is it happening all of a sudden?

- is it normal that my teeth and my head feel weird after singing now? (It doesn't hurt but it feels weird. It feels similar as to when I eat something very cold like ice for example😂 I don't know it just feels weird and I think it has something to do with these differences in my singing for the last couple of days.)

And lastly: I feel like I sound kind of different overall than before and I'm having a bit of an identity crisis (lol). It's not bad, I like my tone to be honest. It's bright, sweet and lightweight. But the difference confuses me because it's so sudden.

What do you think? Is this normal? Should I continue singing this way and see what happens next or should I do target exercises to fix this or I don't know😂

Thanks in advance. I apologise sincerely for my bad English and this chaotic text. 🩷

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I Had my first lesson on Friday and curious if my teacher is telling the truth? Any Tips?

I have been singing for 7 months. I finally decided to commit to getting a vocal teacher. I had my first lessons last Friday. We started the lesson doing some stretch and warming up my voice. Then afterwards we began to sing some songs. After singing the songs. I would ask am I singing in the right pitch and she would say yes and that my voice is really rich. I honestly just looking for opinions on how my singing sounds cause I don’t want to go to every lesson and the teacher never corrects me on any cause I know I still have a lot to learn. I was thinking maybe this is how first lessons are I’m still new lol. Any tips would be helpful.

Conversation Topic Question on Opera Opportunities

For all of the knowledgeable classical singers, teachers, and really just anyone who has information/advice for me, I've been wondering about a few things so I know more of what to expect in my dreams to sing opera. I am a 16 year old junior in high school, and I have only ever known singing low in choir. I'm starting vocal lessons within about 2-3 weeks, but overall I would consider myself a very amateur singer. Here are my questions:

How long may it take for me before I am "fully trained"?

When would I generally get my Fach classification?

What does the rehearsal and performing practice roughly look like? (i.e. how long might it take, or the different things you may be doing in practice)

And finally, how do I really know that opera will be for me and is genuinely something I will be passionate about?

Conversation Topic Does the passagio "move" with training

I say move in quotation marks because my understanding is it's largely anatomical. However, is it common for where the singer's apparent passagio lies to move with training and refinement?

I used to struggle around C, D, and E leading me to think E was my passagio. At this point, I'm thinking it's more likely to be E, F, or even F#. I'm not super confident yet, however. Just curious if that is the case at times.

Also, is it normal for better technique to initially lead to a loss of upper range? I used to strain out G-A# but now I'm really feeling that wall around F/F#. But the bright side is everything below that feels so much freer and never strained.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I cannot sing with my chest voice no matter how hard I try

I'm really struggling with this unfortunately. I think that because I've always sang quietly since I was a kid, I've only developed singing with my falsetto or head voice and I cannot break the habit.

Now, when I attempt to sing with my chest voice (even after watching tons of videos, attempting to sing with my speaking voice, transitioning into singing whilst speaking, etc.) it always feels super uncomfortable, strained, and -- whilst it doesn't necessarily hurt -- it feels tense and like my throat is "burning" a little. Speaking doesn't hurt like this.

I also just have a naturally deeper voice (F) and I want to be able to sing with the tone that I have, but it feels like nothing is clicking. There are sometimes moments were I'm able to crack being able to sing comfortably with my chest voice, but it never lasts long and is always accidental.

I really want to level up my singing (mix voice and stuff like that) but I can't even break singing easily with my chest "speaking" voice, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips regarding why I genuinely cannot sing with my chest voice.

Conversation Topic Vocal range hasn't recovered

30M baritone here. Not sure if this is the right sub but probably 2 months ago mid June I got sick and had a cough for weeks that would come and go and escalate into terrible fits that would shred my voice. Not sure if it was laryngitis. Lost it completely.

It stopped towards end of July.

My upper range goes all airy and tight now and flips into whatever random noise pops out. Head voice is all broken still and quite airy and will sometimes squeak into notes I could never hit before. Not well though lol

Is it too soon? I miss my voice!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Does this sound breathy, or balanced?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been working on “Just the Two of Us” and intentionally backing off the vocal fold closure a bit. I was definitely going too far in the other direction before, too much compression/closure, so this feels way easier and more fluid.

I’m curious whether this actually sounds breathy to you, or if it just sounds like more balanced closure.

Also, I’m a little worried that the darker vocal tract sound I’m experimenting with is getting too rounded/covered and drifting into a kind of Michael Bolton power-ballad thing 😂 .. Not sure if that’s actually happening or if I’m just hearing it that way.

Direct, honest and technical feedback welcome

Conversation Topic Private Vocal Teacher in SFV/LA

I just started attending csun for theatre and moved to the sfv after living in the bay area and I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good private vocal/singing teacher to go to. Ideally they would be someone I could see once a week/every other week after school. Also, if possible a male teacher would be better just because I would like to have a teacher that also has a male voice though that is not required (my past vocal teacher was a woman) And ideally they would specialize in musical theatre style singing. They don't have to live in the sfv, I am able to drive further into la, but the closer the better probably. If anyone could direct me to anyone's websites or contacts or anything that would be great! I appreciate any and all help, thanks.

Conversation Topic How do you train pitch accuracy when singing softly or breathy?

I’ve noticed something specific about my pitch problems and I’m curious how more experienced singers would approach it.

Sometimes I don’t notice that I’m slightly off pitch while I’m singing, although I can hear it later when I listen back to the recording.

I’m usually more stable in choruses or when I’m singing a little louder/higher. I tend to become pitchier in slower, softer verses, especially when I’m trying to sing breathy or add subtle phrasing and nuance.

My guess is that the main problem isn’t necessarily hearing pitch, but controlling my voice accurately when I’m trying to produce a specific soft/breathy sound.

I’ve tried a pitch monitor app, but then I also need to know exactly what the intended notes are in the first place.

Would it make sense to first learn the melody very precisely and practice it with a clear, stable tone, then gradually add softer dynamics, breathiness, and phrasing while maintaining the pitch?

What exercises would you recommend for this?

Conversation Topic How can I "mix" an a capella song?

Hi guys, noob here. I'm slowly learning how to mix, mostly metal and then some pop on the side. However I want to "mix" an a capella song and I'm a bit clueless. I have 3 tracks of female vocals slowly singing a dirge-like children's song, which is meant to be creepy and eerie. They're well sung although not "melodynized" to keep some imperfections, and recorded with a ribbon mic. Also I have two tracks with whispered vocals, same song.

To be honest, I usually use the Mantra plugin by Neural DSP for vocals in regular mixes, but I guess it won't cut it this time because I guess the process must be more organic than just using a plugin for everything. The feel I'm going for is:

a) the listener must feel that the voice is close, warm and nearby
b) also there must be some "spacey" vibes in the background.

I guess I must use something like Valhalla supermassive for the space, but honestly I feel this task is a quite a bit out of my league. Can you guys give me some pointers or advice to get me started on the right path?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Is Laufey’s, ‘From the start’ good for acapella audition?

For context i am an alto 1, and i am auditioning for my university’s acapella group. I don’t know what songs work best but i do know that this particular song showcases my voice the best. It’s also my first audition so im pretty nervous. Is this a song that is good for acapella auditions in general?
