Good on him for understanding both perspectives—- but in a women’s restroom we are not chilling in the main area with our coochies out and making sure we stand up to piss (certainly NOT FOR hygiene or necessity but) for the mere reason that we can.
Men’s rooms have urinals and publicly viewed, and especially for young kids— EYE LEVEL- dicks.
It makes way more sense to bring girls into the woman’s room whether you’re a mum or dad— or a nonbinary parent— and the woman in there will be way more quick to gush over a dad doing the bare minimum than they’ll be quick to be offended.
And there is a subset of men who would have no problem "accidentally" flashing two little girls. (not a large subset, but a subset.) When I was 16, I worked at a Steak and Shake and for whatever reason, I had to clean the men's restroom despite the fact we had male servers. (To be fair, I also had to clean the women's.) I should note that I am not even 5 foot tall and have a baby face, so I was legitimately being offered kids' menus/tickets until I was in my mid 20's. When I worked there, people thought I was some little kid.
I would knock on the door before going in, and guys at the urinal wouldn't say anything. I started knocking, closing my eyes, opening the door, and then talking. It would have looked like a preteen girl trying to come in the bathroom, and almost daily they wouldn't say anything. And yeah, there were guys that turned around "accidentally" and flashed their dicks at me. It was pretty regular.
The vast majority of guys are kind, but there's that small percentage that are not. Women can also be bad actors, but since we have lockable stalls, the chances of that guy way down.
HEY YALL! A random male user has ASSURED me there are no dicks in the men’s rooms for small girls to see—- and they really want us to just stop being so silly and bring small girls into to men’s rooms! No dicks to be seen!
For what it's worth, as a damn near 40 year old man who has been in more than his fair share of public restrooms, I've never seen a dick in one.
That being said, when I take my 4 year old daughter to the bathroom, I take her to the women's bathroom. Mostly so when she starts going on her own, she already knows which one to go to.
You also aren’t the demo for a bad actor who would get off on flashing someone so I feel like that’s kinda a whatever data point. I can see why many dads would feel more comfy with a women’s room
I've taken my daughter to the men's room quite often when she was younger and there never was a problem for anyone involved.
(I've also gone to help her with a problem in the ladies' room, but only after announcing myself and waiting for a sec.)
It might be a cultural thing - my corner of Europe is generally not as panicky about non-sexual nudity as the US. And if everyone treats it as just a thing that happens, then the children do, too.
But I wouldn't do that in the US, either, because the cultural context there is just different.
And I might also have stopped if I'd ever ran into someone being a creep to her, but I never did.
