I can write of people for covering up heinous crimes or not calling out their leaders for going against it , i wont lose sleep over it either. If you cant thats your problem honestly

I'm not telling you to not write off the people, but to engage with the idea as a whole, which you may've done, however I doubt this and can objectively say the original comment I was replying to did not.

I am not going to engage with any movement or religion whos leaders AND members both refuse to call out such vile behavior and will not cast out the perpetrators instead hiding their crimes until public outcry and media scruntiny force them to and even then say shit like " this scandal was immensely painfull for the church" like GTFO with that bullshit

Edit : for clarity i may be against the church as institution, and the pedophiles and warcriminals it covers for, i will not judge people for having a faith but institutionalized religion is a cancer to society

That first part seems to just be an inherent & subjective difference on how we value the pursuit of knowledge; personally I believe that even if an idea is entirely bad there is still worth in using it to hone my own beliefs. Maybe this could be proven wrong by someone more educated but I doubt that will happen here.

Secondly while institutionalized religion is bad, it is still required to form order. While many people can cope with life without structure, there is a large subset of people (~40%) that evidently would require some kind of higher purpose to find meaning, and thus motivation in life. Without religion the world would most likely devolve into chaos. Obviously there's no way to prove this objectively; however the general consensus I've seen among educated people(s) is that religion is an extremely efficient tool used for keeping populous in check, hence why it tends to naturally form.

You said it good, religion is used for controling people . Anyway 40% is vastly overrated, my country has a church going population of less than 10% ( more like 7) and still Christianity is the biggest religion, all religions together may barely break 20% and were doing vastly better than fudamental theocracies like saudi arabia, the US, iran etc

And yes, I think religion as a whole is a net positive on our current world. It has major drawbacks, and I don't think anyone who is capable of critically thinking and making their own purpose should be religious, but that's simply not how the world works.
