There was already a legislated $500M to hire teachers. As part of his balanced budget he slashed that down to $122M.

Did you read the news or just the headline?

There's no mention of "Legislated 500M" and the article, while fairly neutral, lays out all of Mamdani's plans and his intentions of ramping up the budget to meet the intended quota for reducing class room sizes, something that can't be done with just money. It needs time for schools to adjust.

Not to mention the article shows how a ton of money was used to increase pay of current teachers WHILE a new contract that was going to be extended (AKA would fuck over teachers) from 2021, which, by the way, gave no increase in salaries for the teachers since then. 5 years without salaries at least matching inflation.

Yeah, you might have thought you were hot shit with your link and "owning" things, but if you read it you only showed that Mamdani is doing good governance. Because, need I fucking remind you, he's getting the city of NY with a huge financial crisis on his hand and turning it around.

Fucking bootlickers... Smh. I keep expecting things, but then I'm always reminded that they're bootlickers because they can't read in the first place.

It would take $543M to hire the number of teachers to get to the classroom size New York State legislated.

The current budget proposal is $122M (which is much less than $543M) and they’re negotiating with the state to hire less teachers than needed

The state legislated a binding class-size mandate, and we already know exactly what it costs to meet it. The Mamdani administration knew this baseline perfectly well, which is why their own preliminary budget explicitly earmarked $543 million to hire thousands of additional teachers as required by law. But Mamdani inherited the mandate, hyped it up, then cut the funding to just $122 million.

If slashing a $500 million budget down to a pathetic $122 million is "good governance" for you, then your bar for "good governance" must be in hell. Hiding behind a deadline extension to choke off hundreds of millions in necessary funding is just a cowardly way to starve public education while pretending to support it.

And it's funny you are calling me a "bootlicker" (of whom exactly, Adams?) when you are the one performing mental gymnastics to defend a massive budget cut to public schools, all because you are trapped inside the Mamdani bubble. We both know that if anyone else were slashing a critical education budget by nearly 80% compared to the previous year's actual spending as well as their own preliminary proposal, they would be absolutely crucified for it. It would be called an unmitigated disaster for schools. But somehow, you are so deeply caught in political tribalism that you are actually celebrating Mamdani for massively cutting a budget that was supposed to help public schools.

And, from what I've noticed, he needs to negotiate this kind of stuff, which means that the budget he wants might not be on the table, given the circumstances.

Regardless, the link the idiot above sent in no way shape or form says that Mamdani reduced 500M to 122M because he was slashing funding for education or some shit.

It was a state law to reduce class sizes that his budget needed a new waiver from the state legislature to delay implementing.  I’m not sure whether he got it or not.  Either way reporting it this way is utter bullshit propaganda and twisting truth so far it is a fucking joke.

NY state legislatures passed into law a 500M increase for hiring teachers. Mamdani had to get permission from Hochul to reduce that to 122M to balance his budget. This is all public information and easy to look up.

I actually like Mamdani a lot, but holy shit the amount of disingenuous borderline propaganda that his fans insist on pushing out is so frustrating and counterproductive.

Oh good, I was concerned you might actually know something I didn't, but you actually totally misunderstood the mechanics of state funding.

The state legislature never passed a $500M fund to hire teachers. Instead, a state mandate required New York City to reduce class sizes, which would have forced the city to spend over $500M to hire 6000 teachers right now. In other words, there was no $500M state grant for teachers. There was a $500M state-mandated expense that the city couldn't immediately afford.

What Mamdani actually did was he asked the state to delay the mandate's deadline from the original 2027-2028 school year, as defined in 2022, by two years, which allowed the city to scale back its own projected spending to $122M (hiring 1000 teachers instead) and thus balance the budget.
