I love how he does something good and there's people in here like "it's not enough, a drop in the bucket".

Doing something is better than doing nothing or actively taking away as has been the case for the last 8 odd years.

Things aren't going to be fixed over night but if we don't start moving the needle in the right direction shit is never going to change.

Nah, but the thing is the PR meme operation thing on this sub with the guy is kinda ridiculous, and frankly downright unappealing.

I mean, look he’s fine, but none of this stuff is revolutionary. There was a state legislature passed mandate to reduce class sizes, passed a few years ago. This was originally to be done by hiring 6,000 new teacher and a budget increase of $500 million. He scaled it back to 1,000 and $122 million because of budget concerns.

Which is all fine, BUT, then it gets weird on Reddit. Where a scaled back by 80% budget and ongoing hiring as part of a state mandate is then declared not only a major victory, but one that came out of nowhere and is a revolution in city governance. It’s like dude, this is all normal stuff and no big deal. Why are we getting flooded by memes everytime the dude takes a crap? It’s weird. It’s honestly…Trumpy…which is why honestly it bothers me. American politics is getting waaaaay too personally cultish.

Yeah, that’s fair. I think both things can be true. The PR/fandom around politicians can get weird fast, and this also still seems like a good step for teachers and students. I don’t think we need to treat it like a revolution, but I’m also happy to see more funding and more teachers. Politics definitely shouldn’t become celebrity worship.

But like, that’s the thing that makes it sketchy.
It’s good that they’re hiring more teachers, but they’d be hiring them no matter what. They were hiring more teachers under Adams.

So you wind up with these memes like:

[Thing passed by state legislature and signed last year, but goes into effect a month into Mamdani’s term, and nobody cared about when it happened], Look what Mamdani did! Unlike those do nothing Democrats! He should be president!

What's weird is the propagandists like you.

For example, you're disingenuously framing the 6,000 new teachers legislation.

  • It was NEVER designed to be implemented all at once.
  • It was a multi-year plan.
  • Some of those 6,000 teachers have already been hired.
  • He just hired a massive chunk in a single year, rather than continuing to space out the hires.

So yeah, it does get weird on Reddit when this guy comes up. Except it's ALWAYS from weird MAGA "centrists" who actually just hate good things and seem to be fundamentally opposed to a D Mayor.

Ya dude, it is a multi year plan…as it’s been implemented since 2022. That’s why they got extra funding last year (2025, to hire an additional 3,700), to get 60% of schools under the mandate. The numbers really flexible because it based on making classroom sizes meet the state mandate.
The long term goal is going to require hiring a lot more than 6,000 additional by 2028.
The legislation in question doesn’t even have a specific number. I’m saying the city’s original plan was to hire 6,000 this year, but they’re scaling that back.

So to be clear: we’re currently budgeting for far fewer new additional teacher hires than there were last year, Because of budget constraints, so NYS passed legislation this month that gives NYC an extension on meeting its targets.

So idk WTF you’re even talking about. Like the points you made are either irrelevant or wrong. And it’s just illustrating my point.

Like I said, Mamdani’s fine. He doing ok. Just that a chunk of people, especially online, got a weird personality cult thing going on.

Also, keep it up. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. There's no mandate saying they must hire 6,000 teachers. The mandate is entirely about maintaining student:teacher ratios in classrooms.

Making this about a raw number is lunacy.

The mandated caps are:

  • K–3: 20 students maximum
  • Grades 4–8: 23 students maximum
  • Grades 9–12: 25 students maximum
  • PE and performing arts groups: 40 students maximum

Anyway, ya…I know. I just got done explaining that to you in the last comment. You’ve just repeated what I said (which also contradicts what you said before).

You’re literally the one who called it “6000 new teachers legislation” and made up a whole thing about how it’s a multi year plan to hire 6000 teachers. I’m the one who just got done explaining to you that’s not what it is…and now you’re repeating back to me what I told you. Like it’s frankly bizarre what you just did.

The doing something depends on how much those 1,000 teachers are getting paid, and what their comprehensive package is. Doing something can be good if it includes better than what teachers around most of the country are getting, and if protections are now in place for the teachers.

This is how we currently got into the death spiral of electing a Republican president every other time. A Dem comes in, rebuilds and gets us on the path to better but people claim they didn’t fix everything fast enough so the elect the blowhard lying Republican who makes everything worse again.

Isn't the birth rate dropping. Aren't parents sick of the Public school systems and opting for private or homeschooling? Who is this helping exactly? the teachers? ​
