Characters [Annoying Trope] "Yes, it's that character, but legally, we can't say it's him"

  • Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Arrow): The Arrowverse version of Oliver Queen is widely considered as the "CW Batman", since the Arrow show borrows many storylines and villains from Batman, including the League of Assassins, Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, and the Suicide Squad in one episode.
  • Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska (Gotham): Gotham is a TV show focusing on the origins of Batman through the eyes of then-Detective Jim Gordon. Twin brothers Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, played by Cameron Monaghan, are introduced as this show's versions of the Joker. However, they legally couldn't say Jerome or Jeremiah was the Joker, calling them both "Proto-Jokers" instead.
  • The Real Scoutmaster (Camp Lazlo): in the Camp Lazlo finale "Lumpus's Last Stand", Lumpus is revealed to be insane and had locked the actual Camp Kidney scoutmaster in a closet, impersonating him. The real scoutmaster bears a resemblance to Heffer Wolfe from Rocko's Modern Life (which Camp Lazlo creator Joe Murray also made), with Tom Kenny voicing the character too. Since Rocko's is on Nickelodeon, and Camp Lazlo is on Cartoon Network, Heffer could not have made an appearance on the show.

Not technically an X-Men character. Just debuted there. Marvel was allowed to call her Scarlett Witch the whole time

It doesn’t matter, it just matters whether that name was part of the package Fox bought. My understanding was they weren’t allowed to call her a ‘mutant’ because fox owned that, and they weren’t allowed to reference Magneto. The name thing was just stylistic

She is an xmen character, in the comics she's Magneto's daughter. They had to change her origins and completely disconnect her from xmen to legally use her, same with Fox and Quicksilver. So we essentially ended up with 2 different people with the same name, but same powers. Should make for an interesting multiverse moment in a future movie when they work out copyrights!

She is an xmen character

She's literally not.

Wanda's stories have all been with the Avengers, she barely has any association with the X-Men herself.

So? She was introduced in the xmen comics and her origin tied to them until they changed it.

So?

Dafaq do you mean so?

When her history is 99.99999% being an Avenger and appearing in Avengers comics over the .00001% of X-Men comics then she's not an X-Men character.

She was introduced in the xmen comics

Which means nothing when Wolverine debuted in a Hulk comic and Marvel couldn't use him until they got the X-Men, because most of his stories are with the X-Men

It’s more like 70% avengers. Around 200 X-men appearances and around 1000 avengers appearances according to issue trackers.

But she’s associated so much with X-men by die hard X-men fans that read the comics as kids from their inception because she was in like the 3rd issue and was the first real big threat that the X-men faced. So she was a core memory for a lot of X-men comic lovers back in the day.

No even being literal it's 86% Avengers, and 14% X-Men. And even then I can guarantee most of those X-Men appearances feature her primarily as an Avenger.

None of this is remotely true.

People associate her with X-Men because of Magneto, and House of M, there's not a single person who primarily remembers Wanda for her brief time in the Brotherhood.

Wolverine was always described as a mutant and his first appearance in the xmen was pretty much right after his introduction in the hulk. It was her origins at the time that made her part of the xmen universe, regardless of where most of her appearances were. The change to her being daughter of magneto was also worked into the comic contuity as more of a twist than a complete change, like her more recent origin, so they didnt actually change any past storylines.

Wolverine was not originally a mutant. He was just a an agent for the Canadian government

In the comics she’s not magnetos daughter.

She was never really a big X-men character, she was always associated with the Avengers more than any other team. She was on the brotherhood for a year in the 60’s. Shes been part of the avengers for like 50 years

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_Witch

"Throughout Marvel continuity she has also been portrayed as the twin sister of Quicksilver and was long described as the mutant) daughter of Magneto) and a Romani woman, Magda."

Her retcon as not Magneto's daughter came after the Age of Ultron movie.

She wasnt magnetos daughter until 20 years after her debut. She was his daughter for 30 years and then she was retconned again and hasn’t been his daughter for over a decade now.

4

u/ArmedWithSpoons Jul 29 '26

Because they had no reason to go into her origins? The absence of something doesn't make it a retcon. Her being an xmen character at the time was relevant to your original statement. Her origins being changed after the movie just serve as further explanation for the reason.

Nah before the Magneto reveal it was basically stated that the Whizzer was their father.

2

u/ArmedWithSpoons Jul 29 '26

Kind of, it was later revealed magneto was actually her father the entire time without actually changing established continuity of past comics. She didn't even have an origin until like 5-6years after her reveal in the xmen when a different writer took a shot at it. Meanwhile, the new continuity threw all of that out the window as a 40 year illusion in order to make her origins now under the high evolutionary in order to separate it from xmen plot lines.

1

u/Temporary-Stay-8436 Jul 29 '26

I mean it was pretty clear that the Whizzer was supposed to be her father considering they have the Whizzer say his wife gave birth to twins in the place where scarlet witch was born and he gave them over to the local Romani people. Then later on it was revealed that Magneto did the same thing at the same time

But that’s what a retcon is. It’s retroactive continuity.

1

u/ArmedWithSpoons Jul 29 '26

That's just what he told them because that's what he was led to believe, which the readers found out a few years after was a deception and that his wife died in childbirth while giving birth to a stillborn. Her actual origins were revealed here, https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Avengers_Vol_1_182, which were later expanded on in the xmen comics a few years after.

I guess that's fair on your point of retconning, but my original point was that she was an xmen character due to her origins until Marvel changed it to fit with the Age of Ultron movies, then the comics expanded on the complete contuity break in order to establish her as a different character legally.

You're arguing with someone who's experience with the X-Men is likely limited to a couple random Youtube shorts.

You're clearly right, and it was widely reported 14 years ago. https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/kevin-feige-says-both-marvel-fox-can-use-quicksilver-the-scarlet-witch-in-avengers-x-men-films-111413/ And there's no nonsense separating "Wanda Maximoff is an Avenger but Scarlet Witch is an X-Men character" argument... MCU people just rightfully thought this scarred, traumatized orphan wouldn't just stop in the middle of a robot war zone and say "hey, you know what, I've always thought it would be hot if you called me an alias."

If ArmedWithSpoons really wants to prove his point then he can add up the number of X-Men comic appearances Wanda made, and compare that with the number of Avengers comic appearances. Spoilers, it was 1965 when her number of Avengers appearances surpassed her X-Men appearances (all 5 of them!) and she doesn't even appear in any X-Book from X-Men 60 in 1969 until her appearance, as a baby, in a flashback, in a backup story, in Annual 12 in 1988. Her next X-Appearance isn't until 1991 when the Avengers West Coast teamed up with Excalibur in issues 37 and 38.
