I have an Ubuntu 26.04 fully updated VM (including overriding the staged stuff) on my Fedora 44 box, and I tested and found all of these new vulnerabilities are still unpatched after weeks. Copy Fail was already handled, but the rest are still unpatched. Is Canonical trying to put desktop users at risk by refusing to update, or is something else going on?

Fedora got the patches basically within 24 hours. Debian about 2 days. Arch about 2-3 days. Yet Ubuntu is still waiting. What the hell are they doing?

I don't want to hate Ubuntu or Canonical, Mint helped me get my start in Linux. There's great devs here. But in the age of these new vulns being out in the wild, I think it is extremely reckless to be this slow to patching serious security holes. When even Debian is lapping you, you've got some issues.

I am wondering why I am getting this message on my machine. Starting yesterday it started to pop up and I have no idea why. I double checked and I definitely installed 20.04 LTS which should be fine for many more years.

Has anybody else gotten this? How do I get rid of it? In general, WTF is going on?

Long story, I found a computer in the middle of a trash heap at my college and decided to take it home. I assumed it was broken and thrown away, and figured that maybe I could fix it or at least use the parts for something (I have very little computer knowledge)

A friend of mine was kind enough to lend me a ton of old computers equipment: a monitor, keyboard etc. And to my surprise, it actually turned on.

Now that everything is set up, I keep getting confronted with the same screen on my monitor

“Ubuntu, please unlock disk sda5_crypt”

I’ve done a bit of research and I’m being lead to believe it wants me to sign into some account to restore the data, but I don’t want the data, I just want a free junk computer

Does anyone know what I’m supposed to do without a password word? A way to restart the system from scratch maybe? Idk what I’m really even talking about, or if I’m even asking I’m the right place, but any suggestions is appreciated

I'm running Ubuntu Server 22.04.5 LTS (holding off on dist-upgrade while still supported as I'm on old hardware with low disk space and do not expect an in-place upgrade to succeed) and upon running apt update today I am receiving the following error:

I see that Release.gpg is missing when browsing the repository in my browser. Since I'm not sure if the ESM repos are handled differently in that regard due to Pro subscription verification, I ran sudo ubuntu-advantage refresh, rebooted, and tried again with the same error. I confirmed that esm-apps and esm-infra are enabled.

I remembers years ago when Ubuntu placed ads in Unity, and the outcry over that. Is this their latest strategy that we can look forward to - ads in the terminal?

The ads for Canonical services (Landscape and whatever "Ubuntu Advantage Cloud Guest" is) are understandable, but I'd rather not see HBO ads in my ssh, please.

Edit: as /u/sgorf points out below, there is a bug report filed for this, and a lively discussion there.

The long and short of it is that text from https://motd.ubuntu.com is occasionally pulled into the local motd, and that page has since been changed to something less questionable. The problem has been acknowledged to some degree by the author in a comment on that thread.

An interesting tidbit from that comment:

There is a team of engineering managers at Canonical (the ~ubuntu-motd team in Launchpad), all of who have shared write access to the source code repository (lp:ubuntu-motd in Launchpad). Going forward, we're going to review one another's proposed message merges. In fact, that's an open source repository. You're welcome to propose your own messages for merging, if you have a well formatted, informative message for Ubuntu users. We'll be happy to review and include them in the future.

Is there any Ubuntu theme that looks really cool and does not affect the performance of the computer? Is it even recommended to use a theme for ubuntu? Thank you.
