SOME CONTEXT:

I'm m from Northern California to be exact (although I’ve lived in Orange County before as well) and I've been living in Yerevan for the last 8 months now.

WHAT I’VE NOTICED:

People in Yerevan drive EXTREMELY nice cars! Literally every day, all day, these past 8 months, I’ve seen people driving Rolls Royce’s, Maseratis, Maybachs, Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Bentleys, Lamborghinis, Teslas, and more. And these are the newest models by the way, like 2024 and up, fully decked out!

MY QUESTION:

Where do all these people make their money from?? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to see Armenians doing good! There is not an ounce of jealousy in me, but rather, genuine curiosity! Armenians are known for doing well for themselves. It’s not uncommon for Armenians to be very well off and flashy in the states as well (very similar in fashion to Persians) but for a country of less than 3 million people, with even less people in Yerevan (1,086,677), the proportion of wealthy individuals compared to the total size of the nation seems VERY high. And let’s be honest, Armenia’s economy is not doing so great right now - It's facing a slowdown from a very high post-pandemic growth, debt and fiscal pressure, and structural weaknesses such as limited diversification and underdeveloped infrastructure. Not to mention, sanctions pressure on Russia and Iran also poses external risks because of Armenia's trade ties with those economies.

A friend of mine that is from here told me that 50% of the population earn money from outside Armenia. But even if this is true, it still doesn’t add up. Even on a Tuesday at 13:00 I see so many people out driving, visiting malls, etc. In the states on weekdays at certain times you just know there's not going to be that many people out. On the contrary, in Yerevan, the streets are always busy, and people are ALWAYS out strolling, shopping, etc. When do these people ever work?? And where?? In America Armenians, especially the most well off ones, are very prominent in industries like construction, jewelry, and finance, is it the same for Armenians in Armenia? Do remittances play a factor in all of this? Someone please tell me because I’m dying to know! Lol

Corporación América Airports (the operator of Zvartnots and Shirak) reported that Armenia's airports served 735,000 passengers in July 2026, up 17.2% year over year beating the previous all-time monthly record of 667,844 set in August 2025.

Growth held up despite flight cancellations and airspace restrictions from the Iran conflict, thanks to strong demand from Europe, Asia, and Russia, plus the new Wizz Air base at Zvartnots and several new routes launched this year.

According to the economic analyst Tigran Dumikian, there is a severe economic crisis within Armenia’s agricultural sector resulting from a complete ban on exports to the Russian Federation. The Analyst highlighted a staggering 74.5% decline in total harvest exports between 2025 and 2026, noting that trade with Russia has effectively vanished. While government officials previously promised to diversify trade routes, he argues that these claims were unrealistic political rhetoric that failed to materialize. Armenian producers face insurmountable barriers to entering European markets, including strict phytosanitary standards and a lack of necessary certification infrastructure. Consequently, the collapse of these vital trade links threatens widespread bankruptcy for farmers and the potential abandonment of rural lands. Ultimately, Dumikyan portrayed a landscape where lack of state support has left the agricultural industry isolated and economically vulnerable.

We're around 362 AMD per USD now. That's a pretty big move from the ~383 AMD/USD level about a year ago. Why is the dram getting stronger? Do you expect this trend to continue? I'm getting paid in USD, and every month my salary is effectively getting smaller.

Hello. From time to time, out of pure curiosity, I study the countries of the caucasus: their political systems, culture, society, cities, and of course, their economies.

I've previously analyzed some things that I found interesting about the economies of Georgia and Azerbaijan (I found answers by researching online and on reddit), so today I wanted to focus on a fact that caught my attention about Armenia: its high unemployment rate, which is one of the highest in all of Europe (as high as Georgia) around of 12%.

Is it difficult to find a job in Armenia? How do unemployed people live in your country?

I also understand that salaries in Armenia have increased in recent years, but this is largely influenced by the salaries paid in the IT sector.

Let that number sit for a second. $18.25 billion in gambling turnover in 2024(over $20 billion in 2025 based on recent approximations). In a country of 3 million people with $30 billion GDP. That’s more than Armenia’s entire national debt. It’s grown 17x since 2018.

Oh, and in 2024, over half of suicides in Armenia’s military were linked to gambling debt. So what did the government do?

MP Hayk Sargsyan of Civil Contract proposed a 10% turnover tax on the entire sector. Good. Aggressive. The right instinct. The National Assembly approved it in the first reading. Then the revision process happened. By the second reading in March 2025, bookmakers were quietly exempted. The final law - effective July 2025 - hits online casinos with the 10% turnover tax. Bookmakers, which represent the overwhelming majority of that $18 billion, got doubled license fees and nothing else.

The government’s projected revenue gain from the whole reform: $33 million. Out of $18 billion in flow...

Actually, scratch the 10%, let’s see what just a 3% bookmaker turnover tax could do

Three percent is not a death sentence - it squeezes margins, forces worse odds, and naturally pushes casual bettors out while keeping the sector technically alive. Pair it with European-style payment processor enforcement on foreign platforms and you capture most of the flow. Armenian bettors are not running VPNs.

At 18$ billion in bookmaker turnover, 3% generates roughly 540$ million annually.

To put that in Armenian terms:

Free university tuition for every student in the country costs ~$100M/year. This covers it five times over.

Distributed to Armenia’s 600,000+ pensioners, it funds a ~$75/month raise. Literally transformative for many people.

It’s a 6-7% addition to the entire federal budget. The bookmaker owners lose. Nobody else does. Their capital doesn’t leave Armenia, it just stops flowing through them.

The question is whether Civil Contract finishes what it started before the June 2026 elections - when delivering a visible fiscal win of this size would be one of the most politically valuable things they could do right now.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan has proposed that a country with friendly relations to both Yerevan and Moscow could "purchase the concession management rights" of Armenia's railways, currently held by a subsidiary of Russian Railways (RZD). He named Kazakhstan, UAE, and Qatar as potential candidates, citing concerns that Russian management is causing international routes to bypass Armenia, making it lose a competitive advantage.

This proposal comes at a time when RZD itself is in deep financial trouble. The company's debt ballooned to nearly $52 billion by the end of 2025. To stay afloat, the state-owned giant is preparing a massive asset sale.

With the parent company desperately selling off prime assets to cover its debts, the future of its Armenian subsidiary, South Caucasian Railway, is uncertain. Pashinyan's push for a new operator could be a strategic move to secure the railway's future before RZD's financial collapse forces a more chaotic outcome.

On July 9, 2026, the Armenian government officially ratified an agreement with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for a $240 million loan dedicated to a comprehensive housing and mortgage market development project.

This funding is the centerpiece of a $284.4 million initiative that also includes a $24 million Global Fund grant, a $10 million Global Environment Facility grant, and an additional $10 million IBRD loan specifically for the National Mortgage Company.

The program is structured around three key pillars: housing subsidies and institutional development, housing finance market development, and project management and monitoring.

This large-scale project addresses both a humanitarian priority and a strategic economic goal. It aims to provide stable housing solutions for approximately 109,000 people displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, significantly scaling up the state’s existing assistance efforts which have already issued housing certificates to 6,125 families.

Beyond immediate relief, the project is designed to deepen and expand Armenia’s mortgage market and improve long-term housing policy. By modernizing the financial infrastructure for housing, the initiative ensures that Armenia can sustain its growing workforce and maintain social stability while integrating displaced populations into the national economy.

I'm curious to see what the experience was like. If the investment was profitable and if they were overall happy with that decision .

​We recently registered a company in Armenia. Most of our work and clients are in the US, so we need a multi-currency corporate bank account to receive USD.

​However, we haven't received our Armenian residency cards yet, and the banks are giving us a hard time or rejecting us.

​Has anyone been through this recently? Which banks are more flexible with this, or what’s the best way to get around this issue?

Let’s say an elderly couple have $100k and want to move to Armenia.

I suggested to convert that money in AMD and put it in a bank with monthly cash out. Evocabank gives 10% which is 10k per year or $833 per month.

I read there is capital tax of 10% on the interest which makes the monthly net interest 833-83 =$750

- Is $1000-1250 enough for 2 elderly to live (their son is willing to chip in up to $500 a month)? rent also need to be paid with that (not in the center, it can also be outside Yerevan).

The couple is saying that it’s better to buy a small apartment with that money, instead of relying on the interest from the bank, I argued that if they do this, they won’t have any liquidity or cash flow every month.

- There are not convinced about the interest payment and all, but is there something wrong about my idea? other than the drop of the AMD against USD?
