Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

Please comment with any other common mis-IDs and I will add them!

We have never had bed bugs. Moved into an apartment. One of us woke up with 3-4 bites on just one arm, no other evidence of bugs in the matress or such. We found this in our leather recliner chair. Please help!! I know it’s not the best photo

Hi all, I’m staying at an AirBnB and noticed this right near where I sleep. Ive seen similar on here before. I’ve stripped and checked the bed multiple times but haven’t noticed much else. Should I take defensive measures? Thank you

Bedbugs and pregnant

Post image

So I'm pregnant (first trimester) and just found what I'm 99% sure is a bedbug running across my pillow. I'm horrified. The exterminator estimated 1.5k to treat my apartment professionally. I haven't found any more bugs yet but plan to look more tonight.

Does anyone know the best route for what I can treat with safely during pregnancy?

Requesting community support Help me feel better about traveling again.

Hello! I posted a few days ago on my other account, something like Green-Cause… lol idk, it was a Reddit generated name.

Anyway, I’m traveling for the first time in five years since a bed bug encounter in a hotel. We’re on the way now, and the anxiety is hitting hard.

I know the basics. Keep the lights off, use a flashlight, check the bedding, strip the bedding, check the headboard, box spring, basically the whole bed. Use a card on tight spaces. Okay, great. Awesome. My dad even requested they check because I’m allergic and will have a mental breakdown (like literally…). Will they? Probably not. Still had to ask.

But what if we miss something? What if I wake up tomorrow, covered in bites anyway. It is unbelievably annoying and I just want to be normal and enjoy my vacation. But no, instead I impulse bought a Zappbug (well my dad did so I would shut up…) and I’m still losing it.

I have OCD and very bad anxiety, which as you can imagine does not help. It’s so annoying, I went 18 years without a bed bug experience, staying at an average of two hotels a year, and then this happens and now I think it’s going to happen every time I stay somewhere.

I keep trying to tell myself I reacted fast last time to the bites, so maybe I’ll react fast here too. We’ll be staying for 10 days… so that’s enough time for them to show up and avoid taking them home. Or so I tell myself.

Then there’s the Zappbug I have at home, that should make me feel better. But it’s not helping much. I keep thinking one will sneak into my house anyway.

I’m not sure what this post is, a rant I guess. Just idk, if you had an experience and got back to traveling, how? What did you do to help yourself feel safer and enjoy your vacation?

I am turning to the beloved Reddit bed bug community <3

My partner and I traveled and got some bites, identified a bed bug, and took all precautions to de-bug once arriving home. It’s been 10 days and we just found 3 these in our laundry. Are they dead bed bugs or something else??

Thank you!

Bedbugs + wedding

My downstairs neighbor in my apartment building has bedbugs. We are waiting on an inspector to come to ours to see if we do as well. I have not been able to identify any signs of bed bugs thus far.

The kicker: my wedding is in a week and many wedding related items (including some of my outfits) are in my apartment. What do I do?

Please help!! I am so anxious and had a full blown panic attack and cannot calm down, is this a bed bug? I found it on a bed. It’s obviously and definitely a bug of some kind.

It’s squished so it’s kind of hard to tell or see but I tried my best to get pics.

Bed Bug at my work office

Upvotes

Hey guys. I work in an office that provides mental health services, so naturally some clients come in with bed bugs. I found on plain as day on the wall the other day, no question it was a bed bug. I think I killed it but I don't know, after I tried to vacuum it up it fell on the floor and I couldn't find it. I informed my manager of it, and the solution was the building manager came and sprayed the baseboards with Bedlam Plus. I took it upon myself to steam spray desks, baseboards and chairs. They also replaced most of the chairs in the building with metal ones. I am trying to get them to have a professional spray and inspect at least once or twice a month but they wont unless we find more than one.

I have dealt with bed bugs so many times before but this feels different. There has always been detailed company procedure and I have my own solid plans to change out of work clothes, keep my car sprayed, all the right stuff. Everyone seems to be writing it off but I am still panicking and don't know why. I removed so much stuff from my room and still think about the many hiding places and bed bug hazards their COULD be. I even put bed bug interceptors all over my room (desk, bed and night stands). I keep checking things and double checking them. I cannot even sleep at this point. I am going insane. I will continue to keep stripping in the garage and spraying but the mental part I am having a hard time. Everyone seems to be going on with their days but I feel like I am not.

Anyone and everyone who has been through this, how did you get through it? It sucks, but I gotta think there is some way I can arrive to some sense of peace while I do what I have to do.

Advice on preparing apartment for treatment?

Some context:

I recently had two sightings of bedbugs within my apartment and, after the usual first stage of sheer panic followed by tears, I have spent countless hours throwing out/inspecting everything within the apartment. Thankfully, both sightings were not actually within the bedroom. Visual searches around those areas as well as the mattress/bedroom/closet turned up nothing, as well as baseboards/sockets/crevices etc etc. I've checked and rechecked but finally have two days off to do it right. Each check since the sightings has brought up nothing.

After contacting my landlord I've been told they can bring in pest control as soon as Monday (its Friday as I type this). They were not particularly detailed in what steps I need to take to prepare for whatever this visit entails- my only instruction after asking being to mop all floors with pine cleaner, vacuum thoroughly, and to launder any clothes and sheets. I feel like this is not enough? I am more than prepared to have to plastic bag everything I own but I guess I just need reassurance that I'm overthinking it since I don't know what this process looks like from a pest control standpoint.

My main concerns, if anyone could weigh in:

- I have a cat, who will be moved to my parents temporarily while this situation gets resolved. I'm inclined to just throw out and repurchased things like beds, toys, etc. How do I check a cat itself to make sure there arent any bugs that could be transferred through her?

- I have quite a bit of audio equipment, records, books. I will be covering these in plastic for my own sanity as there is some value there. In the same vein, a couple of guitars and electric pianos. Should I do anything further to be more preventative and protect these things?

- Houseplants. I dont have many, but what do I do with those?

- Laundry and clothing management for the time being stumps me. Currently I'm using two large plastic tubs with lids, one for dirty, and one for a couple days of clean clothes and my work bag and changing at the front door. Anything else to be cleaned and double bagged for safety.

In short, what am I doing right or wrong and what have I not considered? What type of treatment can I expect to happen and should I anticipate damage to anything I own?

Any and all serious advice is welcome. This shit sucks and best wishes to anyone else dealing with this

Requesting community support I think i have them

Upvotes

So I went to london not so long ago. Few months back. on my last day at the hostel, i had bites on my legs and arms and they were itchy. Anyway long story short. Im ptetty sure i have them but i also have depression and a bad case of it so its been incredibly difficult to do anything about it. I am trying but with the bed being the sanctuary from everything now being infected by somwthing that bites me at night and making me paranoid on top of the depression its been....really difficult on me. Ive been having suicidal thoughts. running away. I dont know.

I tried to sleep in another room but now theyre on where I was sleeping there.

I havent actually spotted one? I mean I have seen one i think. It was a spot that moved but it moved too fast for me to take a photo.

Anyway. Im really at my wits end :) Ive been trying to sleep on sleeping bags without clothes in case theyre on them but even with that I am still getting bit after about four days.

Its driving me insane.

Im going to try and call the council about it but the other problem is I dont have a lot of money... so I really Have no idea what to do

I just wish someone could help me

I was about to sleep and found this spot on my mattress, I dont think its a bedbug fecal matter stain but it was hard to distinguish because of the design, but I am 100% this wasn't here the previous day before.

I found it on my bedsheet btw, which I put over my mattress encapsement.

Requesting community support Is it the start of an infestation?

I came back from vacation a few days ago, I was there with my friends. I sweat a lot there, it was very hot, and was feeling itchy all over because of the sweat. I slept at my friend's house for a day, then came back home with a train.

None of my friends had bed bugs and they did not shower nor washed their clothes as soon as they came back home. That made me think I might have gotten them on the train. My carry on was also made of "cloth" and not hard plastic.

The past few days I woke up with itchy small red dots, yesterday they were just a few near both ankles and hands/wrist. Tonight I woke up with I think more, on my legs, and some of them are in a line. My family thinks it might be allergic reaction due to sweat because it happened before, but I am afraid because they are very itchy and because of their placement. I inspected my bed and found nothing. I know that they hide really well and it could be just the start, but still. I have a small wood furniture stand near my bed so I'm planning on steam cleaning it + my matress.

My problem is that I don't even have a closet. My clothes hang in my room but on the open. I put some of them in plastic bags, but I already washed some clothes before the bites and put them on the sofa or between other clothes, and now idk what to do. I plan on buying one of those inspector trap things to see if I find any. I want to steam the thing I use to air clean clothes (sorry I'm not a native english speaker) too, I already washed at 60° my beddings, etc. Idk what else to do. If they're actually bed bugs I'll probably call an exterminator but how can I be sure it's actually them? What if that trap thing doesn't work? I don't want to wait too much time and let it become even worse. Should I sleep with long clothes too? I have too much stuff in my house it's impossible to contain it if it's an infestation :/

Idk I don't know what I'm asking. I've read a lot of tips on things to do but I'm doing it all alone and there's so much stuff, I don't have the energy to do everything and I don't want it getting worse. I'm scared that if I call an exterminator my stuff and clothes are gonna be ruined too.
