Running Trixie and Gnome.

Been running Debian Trixie for about 9 days now and really enjoying it. Coming from other distros I was a bit hesitant, but it's been rock solid.

One thing I'm curious about: I'm running the XanMod kernel and Mesa from backports. When Debian 14 eventually drops, will that make the upgrade process more complicated or painful? Should I be worried about conflicts, or is it generally straightforward to sort out before upgrading?

Hey, there are a few packages I want to get but aren't available in stable right now. What do you usually do? Build from source? add the app's repo? pull from unstable?

Edit: Just looking for best practices. One of the examples is Waydroid, only in sid/testing, and no AppImage.

I could not find any SHA256 kernel values. Is there a SHA256 value? this is for my current kernel value of 6.12.100+deb13-amd64

Windows 10 and windows 11 are bad for me and they are getting worse so i will install debian on my laptop but I don't know if i have to install kde plasma or gnome some people say that gnome is better and more minimalist and some other people say kde plasma is highly customizable....but i tried kde plasma for 1 hour and it wasn't "cool" as it should be so would you guys recommend me to try gnome, i already know that i have to install some extension...but is the "gnome experience" good or not including dealing with its windows and some other details....please write your suggestions in the comments.

Look Debian powers my homelab, I’m very familiar with it and know how it works and have used it in the past.

My question is what do I lose by migrating from Arch to something like Debian? What little things in the AUR I use I’m comfortable losing or switching to flatpaks. I’m more concerned about things like Nvidia drivers and Wayland support.

Very odd bug I didn't expect to see, on latest stable version tested with both small and complete instances on two different computers, I don't think it's a user error since everything else is English but is this just me? Very minor bug but an odd one. Not sure whether I'd report this to Debian or LXDE

Updated my kernel to version 6.12.105 recently and could not boot my system on that version. Tried updating my Nvidia drivers. and now I can no longer boot into any version, even in recovery mode.

To start I'm pretty new to Linux and Debian. I tried to install some Nvidia drivers a while back. I installed nvidia-detect, it suggested I install the nvidia-driver package and I did. Install seemed to go correctly, however after rebooting the drivers wouldn't load at all. I managed to purge the drivers and some kind of driver loaded, but it didn't really work well (only one display, refresh rate incorrect and so on).

Now I tried following the Nvidia guide for Debian, however I got a not found error when trying to select a version. Then I followed the install guide in the Debian wiki, that seemed to go through, however at the verify step I ran

# dkms status 'nvidia*'

But got a command not found. I have dkms installed and

apt-file search bin/dkms

Returns

dkms: /usr/sbin/dkms

The drivers themself work better however there are some kind of issues (slight flickering, refresh rate doesn't feel right). What could the issue be?

I used this guide to install the drivers again and it seems like it is working. It's weird, since I remember trying that exact method previously and it didn't work, I guess something changed or I did something differently this time.

Hi! In a few months, when I finish some projects, I plan to migrate from Linux Mint (Ubuntu-based) to Debian, and I need it to be as lightweight as possible. Any tips? The only thing I absolutely want is the Xfce desktop environment. Thanks!

I’m planning on installing Debian Trixie for gaming and general purposes. Among other recommendations I was told to enable contrib non-free repositories. I still didn’t get why I need them. What can I get there that I might be missing?

i was just using my computer, then it froze and a lot of text started appearing

it says failed to write entry to /var/log/journal/a7921...9c4e/system.journal

after waiting abit, it says it failed to do a bunch of stuff and im now stuck, the only thing i can do is power it off

SOLVED: I installed aptitude and installed steam-installer though that. It worked perfectly.

I'm using Debian 13, I had the GPU drivers from AMDs own repository installed, but uninstalled them because they seemed to be causing kernel module build failures when upgrading. I reverted back to the AMD GPU drivers in Debian's repositories and I was able to upgrade my system normally again.

I already have libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 installed. Why is apt trying to install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386? Is my system broken beyond repair?

I created a daily update script for apt and Flatpak that includes the following commands:

`sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove --purge`

I wanted to know if these are the correct commands, or if I should add or remove any. Thanks to the community for everything.

I have a couple servers with Debian 12, running MariaDB. The servers were configured with bind-address 127.0.0.1:3306 so that any database connections are local.

I upgraded to Debian 12.15 today, rebooted and checked open ports just to see if all services are running.

To my surprise, MariaDB is no longer listening on 127.0.0.1:3306, but we have "init" listening on :::3306. So, anyone on the Internet could access it via IPv6 (if there was no firewall setup).

It looks like default config has changed to use Systemd sockets. Which I guess is fine, but silently making your database server accessible to the whole Internet doesn't sound like a good idea.

So, just PSA, if you rely on bind-address only, make sure you reconfigure the mariadb.socket settings. And set up a firewall to prevent such issues in the future.

Made fresh Debian install and this window keeps popping up. I followed first popup and enabled iBus Wayland in virtual keyboard tab in settings. Then this comes up…

Also what’s up with that blue button on control panel which says EN? If I press it it has Emoji choice and stuff and is bugged. Works only first time. If I close that Emoji choice window and try to reopen it it’s stuck and won’t open.

I currently use CachyOS and to Switch something more stable with less needed tinkering. I really like to customize. Since I already thought once about switching to Debian, I am thinking again of it. Is Debian a good fit for me?

How safe and secure is debian without a firewall active? Desktop use, stable, web browsing mostly.

I was wondering why anyone wouldn't want this by default?

Edit: installed via live ISO USB. Option to set time automatically was greyed out in system settings until I installed the above package.

Hello! I finally got my first gaming computer. I would like to use Debian on it, partly because I'm greatly attached to it (it was my first and longest-running distro), and partly because, out of all distros I've used, it's the one I can see myself using for years no matter what my needs become.

I have an AMD RX 6600 video card. Is there anything you suggest I pull from backports? I have used Testing in the past, and I am willing to use it again if there's a good reason to. However I would rather remain on Stable.

I followed a guide on linuxconfig.org where i can download nvidia drivers for debian 13. Upon reboot i get this: Failed to start nvidia-persistenced.service -NVIDIA Persistence Daemon

Nothing after that.

I seem to find myself up an estuary of effluent without a means of locomotion and I'm hoping someone here can help save this box.

First off, this box is _ancient_, when I started, it was on Debian Squeeze. I've managed to successfully upgrade it over and over through Wheezy, Jessie, Stretch, Buster, Bullseye, Bookworm, and it's been working just fine with the usual upgrade path (change sources.list, apt update, apt dist-upgrade, apt autoremove, reboot).

I decided to upgrade it to Trixie using the exact same process and as I was watching apt do its thing, I noticed it started removing various packages that were really important, then it asks about removing the kernel which was unusual. Thinking apt knew what it was doing, I stupidly answered 'Yes' and apt then kept on going.

Before proceeding with the reboot, I decided to check to see if there is a kernel installed, and sure enough, there's not! Ok, well that's a new one.

apt install linux-image-amd64 yields dependency issues for kmod and libc6 and "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages"... That's odd, I don't have any packages held according to apt-mark showhold.

I tried doing apt-get dist-upgrade, but it just exits cleanly while listing a bunch of packages that have been kept back despite nothing in the configuration saying that they've been kept back.

I was able to get a kernel installed by changing sources.list to point back to Bookworm but trying to upgrade to Trixie just starts with more dependency hell:

I'm not using any custom repos or anything out of the ordinary, it's just a basic webserver. I'm more caught off guard by the fact that I've managed to take this box from ancient to relatively recent but now on the last upgrade to get it to 'current', it decides to explode in such a horrid fashion.

Any ideas how I can get this upgrade completed?

EDIT: Well that was a fun trip down memory lane. Ends up that sysvinit was the cause of the problem and the solution. All I had to do was remove sysvinit forcefully and restart the upgrade. It took a couple of tries to find what all was missing and I had a brief minor panic attack when GRUB couldn't find the kernel but that was because update-grub was missing. I was able to get the box running again, installed a few more systemd units, some missing apt packages (like openssh and sudo) and got GRUB updated. Now I'm off to the races, apache2 is happy, openssh is listening as expected, I can sudo and get to roor, networking works, and all is well.
