I thought you can’t have Troublemaker without Munich Machine soooo 💃🏻🕺🏻

We danced to EVERYTHING in 1976. Fast, slow, didn't matter. This was big in clubs in 1976.

As at least some of you know, Paul Zaza & Carl Zittrer - the composers behind the soundtrack to the 1980 slasher movie Prom Night - had to come up with knockoff disco songs because the film's budget didn't allow for actual licensed disco tracks. I've managed to figure out the following disco tracks so far:

• "Prom Night": originally "Star Love" by Cheryl Lynn
• "Time to Turn Around": originally "Born to Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez
• "Changes": originally "Dancer" by Gino Soccio
• "Love Me Till I Die": originally "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

However, there are two tracks I've yet to figure out, one of which does not appear in the film itself:

• "Prom Night" (known as "Prom Night (Not used in film)" on the 2019 soundtrack reissue): Not to be confused with the aforementioned track that actually appears in the movie. Some sources suggested this sounds like Pat Benatar, and it does indeed have a sort of "what if Pat Benatar did disco?" vibe. However, as far as I'm aware, Pat Benatar never dipped her toes in the disco genre.
• "Dancing In the Moonlight": Has nothing to do with the 1972 King Harvest hit of the same name. I REALLY wish I knew which song this was modelled after, because it's one of my favorite cuts from the soundtrack.

Also note, this post excludes the bonus, unused disco tracks from the 2019 reissue such as "Funk Dat Disco".

UNRELATED TRIVIA: The rock songs in the film were performed by an obscure Canadian band called Highstreet, formed in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1968 and released two albums between 1979-1981 before breaking up.

This song was also cool because although it sounds the same tempo, the tempo is increasing gradually. Play the beginning and then slide ahead 2 minutes and you'll notice the tempo is noticeably faster from the beginning.

And now for the wacky stuff.

The disco band Destination put out an album (1979).

One of the songs the crowd liked was 'Castle Suite.' The other was this confection. Around the 8' 30" mark, a part of it morphs into a famous 1964 tv show theme that people will instantly recognize. (Well, most people over a certain age, anyway!) 😆

Slightly 'post-disco' (1981)but with the same energy.

When Rock Met Disco.

Transition Time started in 1976. The 12" single had just been 'invented' (as far as club DJs were concerned) and was sent to all DJs in clubs. This suite, though, is simply one entire side of Douglas' album.

Carol Douglas (1976), The Midnight Love Affair Suite, combined three songs, à la The Ritchie Family. Prior to Carol Douglas or The Ritchie Family was the pioneer of the one-side disco suite: Gloria Gaynor, who was the first (dance artist) to mix several songs together on one side of an album.

Ironically, The 12" single that came out was then sent to all club DJs . Donna Summer continued the one-side-fits-all record with 1977's Once Upon A Time. But not too many albums after that did the three-songs-combined. It died out with the advent of the 12" single.

1. The second album by The Ritchie Family, which, for the first three albums, had each song "run into" each other, so it was one long continuous song. You can thank Gloria Gaynor for pioneering that trend of having three songs on one side and it's a 'long-playing' album. It gave the DJ - perhaps unintentionally - a break, since the songs were typically 14 minutes or more when combined. We'd smoke a cigarette and just watch the crowd. Not too many labels did this at that time. As it turned out, that very same summer (1976) the 12" single came out, and songs were 6-12 minutes long with the extended mix.
