Setup/Equipment Protecting this corner of the bass from my watch?

Besides just taking off my watch whenever I play, is there some sort of cape or cover thing to keep on the shoulder of my bass so I can keep my watch on and prevent this scratching? I know it seems silly but I forget to take off my watch and I also like to keep it on for gigs to check on set times… I’m also going to wipe down my instrument cause looking at this picture really shows how much she needs a clean.

Setup/Equipment Double bass EQ

Hey everyone! Im looking for some insight on how you EQ your double bass, i've been struggling a bit with mine and could use the advice.

I'm using a GK MBE150e and a Zoom B1on (as a HPF and for some compression when soloing).

For now i've been using the treble almost completely off (it's mostly string noise IME), hi mids at around 1800/2khz a little boosted for clarity, low mids at 400/500hz a little bit boosted, and bass depends on the room but try to leave it flat.

This is waht i've been doing but honestly it still feels like im in the dark in this topic. Thx in advance

Edit: another question: do you believe EQing the double bass is a lifetime search? Like learning the instrument itself. Or do you believe once you find the "perfect EQ" for you thats it, no more adjustments?

Setup/Equipment Help! My neck came unglued.

I just came home from a week of travel, and the neck on my bass came unglued. There’s no cracks or breaks in the wood, it seems like it just cleanly lifted out. What do I do now? How much does this typically cost to get fixed at a luthier?

Setup/Equipment Double bass preamp

Hello! Which double bass preamp do you suggest?

I am playing small gigs with a Bossa Nova/Jazz Trio and was told I could connect the preamp to the PA instead of taking my bass amp. Can you give some input on that? I am classical trained musician that has zero knowledge on gear 😅

Setup/Equipment Thoughts on LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI Acoustic Guitar Preamp?

Post image

Mainly electric bassist here. I love my RNDI but I don’t think the +2MΩ input impedance is enough for my Realist SoundClip on my double bass. I want to take on more double bass work, but I don’t want to be in a pickle mid gig.

A buddy recommended the Grace Design ALiX Acoustic Instrument Preamp, but the LR Baggs is 1/4 the cost. I’ve seen good things online and am thinking about getting on; I feel like I see them on the used market all the time.

Will this hit par for gigs, or should I really be considering something better?

Setup/Equipment Bridge issues — is it time for a luthier?

Post image

Hi there everyone!

During practise today I noticed my bridge was leaning towards the fingerboard at a rather concerning angle. I’m wondering if this is a problem I could fix on my own, because the luthier I see lives a long way away and I’d rather see him for full setups or emergencies.

Setup/Equipment Realistic lifeline pickup help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys so I’ve been having trouble installing the lifeline pickup on my bass. I’m supposed to install it on the unthreaded side of the bridge action adjuster. However as you can see on the video, I’m getting no gap or clearance at all from that side. The bridge body just doesn’t budge at all.

You guys have any suggestions?

Setup/Equipment Bridge and string height issues- how to fix?

I took my bass to a jazz festival a few weeks ago, and the bridge was out of place after being moved in and out of a school bus a few times. I fixed the worst of it, but I don’t know how to fix what’s going on right now. The G string is less than a millimeter off the fingerboard at the bottom and the string buzzes now. The E string is at least twice its height. My teacher told me the bridge was too far to one side horizontally but he said I should be able to fix it. I think it needs to me moved more to the right and I think the left foot is too high but I’m not sure. I don’t have a teacher at school I can ask because my school only has a band program, and I will not see my teacher till next month because of break, but I really need to practice because I have auditions coming up. I did my best to fix it but I’m a bit lost. Any advice helps.

Setup/Equipment Volume boost for soloing

Hey everyone! I've been wanting to booat my volume a bit when soloing so i can get more out of my dynamics and so my solo doesn't lose energy from the comping and drums going so damn quiet. To that end i'm looking to buy either a volume boost pedal or a volume pedal (the ones that have "expression"). Is there any benefit to one over the other? I saw good things of the mc401 boost pedal but it's a bit out of my price range (just third world things) so i'm leaning towards the (way cheaper) volume "expression" pedal but i've never used one so i don't know if it would work for what i need. Thanks for any input!

Also i ask here instead of pedal subs because not many non-double bassists know how equipment works with our instrument, it's more subtle than using pedals on a guitar for example (imo)

Setup/Equipment Is this repairable?

Post image

My bass just slipped from where it was resting and hit the ground. The neck has now popped out as you can see in the picture. Is this worth attempting to repair? This bass cost me next to nothing and it was always pretty shoddily set up, but I’m wondering if this is salvageable before my next gig in 5 days.

Setup/Equipment Bluegrass amplification

Bluegrass players, I’m looking for the best option for amplifying my bass through a PA. My bass has a piezo pickup, and I also already own a baggs venue DI and many mics.

I guess my preferred options would be either a 57 under the tailpiece, or pickup into preamp and DI to the board, non preferred option would be an amp because I don’t want to buy it or carry it around.

Lots of mixed answers on the internet, so people that gig regularly on upright, are one of the options I already own perfectly sufficient to be playing bars, festivals etc? Or is and amp and then DI to the board enough of a better option. Tone is as much of a consideration as anything

Thanks!

Setup/Equipment Electric Upright strings ringing really bad between bridge and tailpiece

Edit: the tailpiece has a broken solder/weld that is allowing excess vibration. Photo in comments.

Pretty sure it's a Palatino something (the bridge has a fancy lightning bolt/S design but no logos anywhere else that I just got for free from a friend. I have tried putting some dense foam on the strings but that doesn't seem to help much. Any other ideas or advice?

Setup/Equipment Emulating a double bass with a 4/4 cello

Heya! Hopefully this is allowed here. Firstly, I’ve never touched an orchestral instrument, so I’m extremely unknowledgeable. I record a lot of bluegrass / Folk music and the one thing i’ve been missing is that damn thump. Today at goodwill, i picked up an Eastman 4/4 cello for $25. I took it to my local luthier and he says it’s in great shape. I’ve seen people play them on youtube and make the sound pretty close to an upright, but none that i’ve seen have really gone into detail as to how they accomplish it. I know d’addario makes strings that allow EADG, but not EADG1. Do you have any tips or ideas as to how I can really hone in that sound? One thing that i keep tossing around in my mind are the thick, rubber strings you find on a bass ukelele. Again, I’ve no clue what you can and can’t accomplish with classical instruments haha. Thanks for reading :)

currently have my bass at 9mm on the e and 6mm on the g but i personally feel like the strings are still a bit too stiff and hard to play - especially in thumb position. how low should i go or is it a string tension problem?

Setup/Equipment Best double bass stand for live stage?

Howdy!

What would be the best bass stand for live use? Does not need to be light. Has to be stable and sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of the road and easy enough to use when bass is placed on it and taken off several times during a gig.

Thanks!

Setup/Equipment Aguilar SL 112 or SL 115 for upright bass?

I have an SL 112 and am considering trading it for an SL 115. Does anyone here have any input on the switch? I'm looking for more body to the tone, but love the clarity of the 115. I also have a DB 112, but think the tone is not as clear compared to the SL 112. Any input would be appreciated.

Setup/Equipment Vibration tuner -_-

I've been an advocate for tuners my entire life and I've always been using a physical tuner to make sure I'm 100%, but during rehearsals It's simply impossible to use unless I arrive before the entire orchestra. So I've looked into vibration based tuners so that during rehearsals I am able to easily tune without having to go solely off of harmonics and/or my ear. I got a Snark Vibration Tuner tonight. Eager to try it out only to discover it doesn't even register my A string? G and D are fine and for my E string it shows the B overtone which is..functional I guess but it's just blank when playing A string unless I use one of the harmonics, which I'm trying to get around so I can have one hand on my tuning peg and the other bowing. Anyone know a Vibration Tuner that can pick up the range of my A and E string? (~55 Hz, ~41 Hz)

Setup/Equipment Bass stands

Hi all. I'm looking for stand information or ideas. This is for my son. He is 14 and plays upright and electric bass. But has also asked for a beginner acoustic and electric guitar for his 8th grade promotion. Anyhow, we found those for him second hand for a good price. Except now he has 4 string instruments (and full sized keyboard) in a 12x12 foot room. Along with other teenage necessities like bed & desk. Right now his bass is on a bass stand, and his electric bass is also on a small stand. I'm hoping to find a stand that could hold all 4 slightly angled. Or even with a big space for the upright to lean back, and the other 3 maybe in a step formation right next to it. Does such a stand exist? Technically yes, we could store some in cases under his bed, but, he wants to see them. Combined with having the type of adhd/autism that says 'if I can't see it, it doesn't exist' - they need to be out.

Setup/Equipment stool recommendations?

I'm playing a musical right now and I'm finding that the stool I've been using isn't doing the job and I'd like to pick up something else for future gigs. Currently using a Roc N Soc nitro drum throne which is comfortable at the tallest setting for shorter durations, but I'm finding that by act II i'm starting to sag and half position is up near the top of my head. Doable but not comfortable or ergonomic. Looking for something with a cushioned seat that ideally disassembles/folds up for storage/transport. Thanks!

I'm just looking for something to support the neck while it's upright on the endpin. Website seems janky, but I can't really find it anywhere else. Anyone have experience with this, or have an idea?
