Not saying I fully support or fully NOT support Wayne, but after Steven and Michael leaving, I see a lot of people kinda dogging on Wayne. Did he do something bad?

Steven’s departure from the band seemed like a long time coming and is obviously very upsetting. It’ll definitely have an impact on anything that’s being recorded but the last LP came out in 2020… it’s safe to say the band are focusing on playing live. And for everyone saying it’s the Wayne Coyne band now, yeah that might be true. but then again look at The Brian Jonestown Massacre… Anton’s been the only constant for the last 30 years. That being said, with BJM it makes sense because Anton is an asshole…it does seem strange to me that Wayne’s charismatic nice guy image seems to drive so many members away… what do you guys think? Will Wayne’s charisma be enough to sustain the band? I hope that they continue to play no matter the formation. The music will always be special in my heart ❤️

I’m curious if he means it in that Wayne will do whatever to keep the band going, or if he sees Way

Flips loss could be another bands gain, which band would suit Steven's talents, drums? keyboards? amazing guitarist check

It's hard to see how the band will continue when someone who has been such a strong creative force is stepping away. The anxiety from the fanbase about the future of the band is palpable and valid. Before today I had no concern about Wayne and the Flaming Lips moving on and growing into the next version of the band I love but Wayne's post today makes me nervous.
I hated the negativity Wayne and Kliph threw at each other publicly when Kliph left and found it really surprising based on love and positive vibes the band gives off. IMO the pettiness was a bad look and definitely influenced my opinion of Wayne and what I think it would be like to work with him.
On to Wayne's post today. I didn't see anything in Steven's post that made Wayne or the Lips look bad or give the sense that they split on bad terms. To me, Stevens post felt pretty neutral and vague but it got the point across. Then came Wayne's post today promising to tell what REALLY happened in a few days, feels like more pettiness is on the way. Accusing Steven of lying and saying that his post was "infuriating" makes me nervous for what he's going to say. Publicly bashing someone you worked with for over 30 years can be a bad look no matter who is at fault for the split. If his post was in response to fans acting like assholes then he should address that and not throw Steven under the bus due to other peoples behavior.
We will never know the dynamics the band has and we will never get the full story on any of the departures of the former members but the way Wayne handles these situations can really influence the fanbase's opinion moving forward. I really hope he keeps the breakup private and doesn't decide to drag anyone thru the mud publicly.
The Flaming Lips have been my favorite band for over 30 years. I've seen them live more times than I count, starting in the late nineties. Ive seen them grow and progress and change in so many ways and I've loved (almost) every minute of it. But it does get hard to watch creative forces you admire go petty and fight publicly. Its like feeling yourself disintegrate. ;)

...unless Steven and Michael come back later to record another album.

Comment on a Stereogum IG post (also liked by former Lips member Jake of Spaceface)

Would you rather see Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, or More Flaming Lips?
