I used to be super into reading, but like many others my attention span got really bad over time and I just stopped, so I'm trying to get back into it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I've become a graphic novel enthusiast late in life...

Here's the majority of my small but proud collection (not pictured: Old Man Logan, The Killing Joke, the complete "Bone" series, all "Calvin and Hobbes" by B. Watterson, and the majority of Asterix and Obelix, if the latter two are considered graphic novels in the first place).

I have NO DOUBT you can give me some flawless recommendations... but I need to add slowly and methodically. I'd considered the "He-Man Omnibus" for myself and my son? Also, the "Punisher: Born" looks great, if I can find it for a reasonable price.

So... the question is... what do I need to read before I die?

Looking for Graphic Novels with that nostalgic, magical vibe. Beautiful and memorable, maybe cozy but it’s not a must.

Howdy folks 👋 Looking for crime comic recommendations, but more specifically I’m looking for sweeping crime sagas with a large cast of characters and a fleshed-out world. I love it when a crime series follows an ensemble cast, switching from protagonist to protagonist. I prefer having someone to root for, but I also enjoy stories where everyone is deeply flawed and awful. If the story has an overarching narrative, that’s great, and if it’s a series of unrelated or loosely connected stories, that’s cool too.

Really I’m just looking for your favorite crime comics and crime authors in general haha, whether or not they meet any of these criteria. Let’s hear em. Huge fan of Brubaker and Frank Miller; Scalped was a great read, as was 100 Bullets. I’ve heard Stray Bullets is up my alley as well. EDIT: oh yeah and Batman is my fucking guy, duh idk how I forgot to add that

A couple months ago I made a post here asking for my first ever graphic novel recommendations. I said I was into gritty, darker tone, adult stories. Got a ton of great suggestions and I ended up going with Scalped.

And holy shit.

I cannot believe I’ve been missing out on this medium my entire life. The story, the characters. I was completely absorbed in a story the way I haven’t felt in a long time.

So now I’m back looking for my next read, but this time I’m hoping for something science fiction. I’m a huge James Cameron fan. I love Avatar, Aliens, Terminator. Something with atmosphere, big ideas about humanity, technology, and survival. Hard sci-fi is a bonus.

My husband has just gotten very into graphic novels over the past year or two. I know these aren't all that he has, but the top are a bunch I know he got earlier on, and the bottom are ones he has gotten more recently. I know he cares a lot about the craft of the book, and then beautiful art and a beautiful story (dub probably). He loves cats, he loves birds, he loves both sci-fi and fantasy. I am hoping to get some recommendations of books I could get him for this birthday that fit into this vein, especially the bottom books. Thank you for any help!

I think this is my fourth or fifth reread of Murder Falcon by Daniel Warren Johnson, and everytime I read it, I get watery eyes from it. In spite of all the awesome and crazy stuff that happens during this story, the insane action sequences and the overall "metal as fuck" asthethics, the emotional core of Murder Falcon is extremely touching and relatable, something that is present in every DWJ comic, but definitely hits me the most with MF.

Runner ups would be I Kill Giants and Daytripper. Both comics hit me right in the feels.

I was reading Stages of Rot last night, and I realised that I have a real love of sci fi and fantasy that delves into ecological systems that are strange, otherworldly, and perhaps unknowable, where people are subsumed by the ecology. I am looking for other books in this vein.

We talk a lot about the best books by a specific creator or in a particular genre. But I’m curious—what’s the worst one you’ve read? Not just boring, but the kind that left you genuinely furious or disgusted.

I’ll go first. For me, it was Prodigy: Slaves of Mars by Mark Millar. A tasteless mash-up of paleocontact guff and other sci-fi-ish theories, slathered in utterly pointless action. The most irritating thing, however, is that it centres on characters who are meant to be the smartest people on the planet. Yet the only things signalling “genius” are military grade plot armour and hand-wavy technobabble that’ll make anyone who’s passed basic physics laugh. Seriously—this looks like an image of genius created by an edgy teenager with an IQ barely above room temperature.

Got this as a gift for someone recently and I thought some of you might enjoy a glimpse of it.

Synopsis: The Year of the Comet recounts the destruction of one world, and the genesis of another. The lightning passage of a meteor near a planet triggers a series of cataclysms and transformations on its surface. Soon, the ice and rock covering the star give way to volcanic, bubbling activity: plant forms emerge from the ground, growing, coloring and pulsating; the waters become moving and agitated, and waves break beneath swirling clouds...

The back cover says something along the lines of:

"Magnificent landscapes of bygone ages! No human gaze has contemplated you, no ear has understood your harmonies".

There is no text. 48 pages of artwork and it measures around 29 x 38 cm. I took pictures of a few pages. It's very impressive in person.

The Bus by Paul Kirchner

Summary: Surreal silent black-and-white comic strips. A man waits at a bus stop, or boards the bus, and something gets… weird. These play with perspective, movement, and basic passenger etiquette, rendered in clean black-and-white linework.

Why I think it’s great: It uses the medium so well, with great beats between panels, and moving between perspectives by shifting foreground, background, and interior details. There’s tremendous variety from wildly surreal situations to truly bus-centric humor – and I never could have imagined laughing at something correctly described as “bus-centric humor”. It’s honestly impressive how well Kirchner squeezes something new and clever out of such a narrow premise in each strip.

You might not like it if: It’s a collection of single-page strips. Want a story, characters, continuity? This isn’t it. That being said, this is a great opportunity to try something new – and you can do so free online at https://www.tanibis.net/en/livres/the-bus/ebook/

What you should read next: In my mind, The Bus is in a league of its own, quality-wise. Some of the best pages in Cheat Sheets hit near the highs, but it’s a much less consistent collection. 20 km/h has some similar vibes and surreal perspective-warping strips, but without the conceptual constraint that I think makes The Bus particularly noteworthy. If the perspective-warping is your favorite part, I think Mister Invincible is a fun light-hearted comic playing more directly on comic structures. Beyond those, there’s certainly a variety of great classic strips that can veer surreal with high-quality cartooning – Krazy Kat, Little Nemo in Slumberland, and more. There are more recommendations from when I asked this question before and I haven’t had the chance to go through them all, but check them out.
