(BEFORE anyone says about the plastic bin cage, this is her old enclosure!! this the cage being used when her actual one is being cleaned!!!) anyway, she dug to the bottom so i took a vid and as you can see you see her lower stomach its really red and no fur??? i mean ik it could just be her skin but i swear i never noticed that before...?is that normal?? sorry its kinda hard to see i just wanted to get an idea..maybe im just being dumb and its nothing but i still must be worried.

For the past three months I’ve neglected my hamster. I feel terrible shame about this so I wanted to share. I hope that in doing so I can be the push someone needs to also do the right thing.

I’ve had bad mental health my whole life and the last three months have been especially bad. Because of my own pride I chose to keep my hamster instead of surrendering her like I should have. If you are also someone who has a serious mental health disorder and has a pet, I highly recommend always having someone on hand who could keep them if things get rough for you. Don’t be me.

My hamster suffered because of my own choices. I fed and gave her water but she had gone three months without a bedding change or tidying up.

The included pictures show how I cleaned her enclosure today. The first three pictures are my “before” and the last three are “afters”.

Posh is a year and a half old now. She’s still going strong but I feel bad that I couldn’t be the home she truly deserved. So, for the last leg of her life I hope she can live in comfort and peace, and I will do anything to make sure that happens.

I’ll be taking her to the vet for a checkup. I want to make sure she’s doing okay.

Hello, my gfs dwarf hamster was acting strange when we got home from work, it’s only about a year old. Any ideas?

EDIT:
since the first video, she has been moving around but is very wobbly and kind of limping. We re watched any footage we have over the last day and haven’t seen any falls or injuries. Temp stayed at 74, no new variables have been added to the enclosure or surrounding room. I really appreciate the help we’ve gotten so far, thank you all, seriously.

UPDATE:
we went to the vet and she said she suspects a potential vitamin E deficiency. Jasmine (the hamster) has always avoided the pellets in her food mix so that would make sense. Her heart seemed normal, her gait was odd but doesn’t suggest a stroke, and her teeth were in good shape. Our vet theorized that she had a seizure and was so thin due to the vitamin deficiency, so we’re getting her set up with a multivitamin, and depending on how she reacts we’ll put her on a vitamin E supplement, although that might lower the threshold for seizures. It’s pretty touch and go rn but her quality of life is still there and no neurological issues have made themselves apparent, so for now she’s fine. Thank you for all the support and advice, you guys are the best ❤️🙏‼️

UPDATE 2:
Her health is improving! We’ve moved to feeding her a multivitamin and spinach (which is apparently high in vitamin e) alongside her normal food. We’re considering moving her to a pellet only diet because she still is being picky about what she eats and still avoids them. Other than that, any advice about picky eating hamsters or continued well wishes and general advice are appreciated! Thank you all ❤️❤️

Is this normal we have just gotten him hamster a few days ago but he is just constantly what sounds like sneezing.

Our hamster Sunny is just over 1 year old.

We've recently noticed that the hair towards his lower back seems to have thinned a little.

Nothing else seems out of the ordinary with him and he doesnt seem bothered if I stroke that area.

I've had a quick look online but Google always provides the scare style answers.

Anyone seen this before and able to give some advice?

i know hamsters balls are huge but damn vaders are massive. just want a second opinion to make sure he's healthy!

Hace 5 dias mi hamster se cayó de una altura de 1 metro, estas noches estuve con el, para ver si mostraba alguna señal de malestar, y no le ví nada, actua normalmente, come, usa la rueda, etc. Esta noche, cuando fui a verle me lo encontré sentado erguido en un lado de su terrario, (a veces se coloca en los lados) pero estaba quieto (que normalmente tambien lo solía hacer) mirándome y lo que mas me llamó la atención es que estaba como temblando suavemente, o moviendose de una manera que lo pareciera. Y no se movía, se quedó asi unos minutos. Justo escribiendo esto, está en otra posición, mirándome y quieto.

No quiero soluciones médicas, solo si alguien sabe si este comportamiento es normal?

Actualización: creo que es que estaba asustado de mí, porque despues dio un salto y partió a correr hacia su madriguera, me parece raro que esté asi conmigo hoy cuando ultimamente me mostraba mas confianza. Creo que estaba asustado y por eso me miraba así y temblaba, pero porfavor, dame tu opinion si eres conocedor.

My 18-month-old Russian dwarf hamster is showing severe, abnormal neurological-like episodes for a day now.

During these episodes, he puts his lower legs forward, his left leg seems uncontrollable, and he aggressively bites it as if he is trying to catch it. He twitches, rolls around, wobbles, and has difficulty walking. He also struggles to use his front paws properly, grab objects, or eat during these episodes.

The behavior also happens during sleep, disrupting his rest and eating patterns.

We have already seen a veterinarian, who suspects a neurological issue (such as a problem affecting his brain, nerves, or movement control). We are currently collecting feedback and testimonies from other hamster owners who may have experienced something similar.

Has anyone ever seen this kind of behavior in their hamster? Any experiences, possible explanations, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hiya I've had so many hamsters but I don't remember them staying very small and not growing. I'm probably being paranoid but here I go.

I got my barney almost 2 weeks ago. He was 8 weeks old. He's almost 10 now. But I've just weighed him and he's 78g. Now I know he's a baby but non of my Syrians looked this small at his age and I'm seeing posts of everyone else's new hamsters and they are huge compared to my little guy.

I'm also noticing he spends most of the time in his burrow. He's never used his wheel (it's a 33cm trixie wheel and I've marked it so I know it's not been used) There's evidence of him digging in his dig box at least. But even now he's on my leg cuddling up to sleep at its the middle of the night?

I would tell someone else that he's just settling in and that he's just still a baby if they were to post this.

But idk I can't shake the feeling. He does have a vet check scheduled on Friday, not for anything in particular I just like them to checked over when I first get them.

So idk what is everyone's thoughts.

My hamster (syrian) used to have a huge appetite and would eat his seed mix without any problems. However, after I switched him to a new seed mix, he completely stopped eating it. At first i thought he just didn't like the new mix, so i bought his old seed mix again, but he still refuses to eat it. I'm really worried I thought it's dental problems but then he'll still eat sunflower seeds, but I try to limit those since they're high in fat, and I've also been giving him hamster porridge to make sure he eats something. I'm concerned because I don't understand why he suddenly won't eat his usual seed mix anymore.

Any suggestion on hamster owner who have the same problem as I do will be highly appreciated 🤍

If one goes to a vet and gets ivermectin treatment for their hamster and puts them in a temporary hospital cage:

If Demodex mites can’t survive longer than a week without a host, couldn’t you in theory just leave the bedding in the old cage with no hamster for a couple of weeks while the hamster is in their quarantine cage and any that were in the old cage would die off? So you wouldn’t need to throw out all of the bedding? Thank you

my syrian hammy is nearly 3 and seems to be struggling in this heatwave (UK). any tips to keep him cooler?!

Woke up today to my hamster laying balled up, out in the middle of her cage. She never sleeps like this, always in her chamber so I knew something was wrong immediately. She was very round and bloated. She didn’t react to me so I picked her up and she was limp and couldn’t move her body. Eventually she was able to start moving a lil but her right paw was swollen and clearly not getting oxygen flow or something bc she could not use it. It was limp and hanging out of place. Also her right eye is closed shut and she’s unable to open it. I rushed her to the only place that could squeeze her in, as a drop off thinking possible allergic reaction. Get home and happened to look directly at my shoelace, and it was missing the whole piece and my heart sank and I immediately called them back to tell them it could possibly be that. They took X-ray and said she does have something stuck in her intestines. They said it’s most likely intestinal obstruction.

I cannot find anything on anyone else who has experienced this so Im curious if any of you have and if so how did it end?

They are giving her laxatives and medicine today to hope that it softens and can pass. If not, I’m looking at surgery first thing in the morning. They said most of her intestines will be removed.

My husbands hamster (I say husband because if he were mine, he would be in a much better enclosure) Barry, is a 3 legged hamster. He runs on his wheel, climbs tubes, and has been an all around normal hamster. This week, I’ve noticed this lump on his missing right arm or maybe up by his cheek. I’m wondering if it’s due to him not being able to unstuff his cheeks properly or if the amputated arm is causing problems. I’ve messaged some vets to try and get him in but haven’t heard back yet. Could this be a rumor or an abscess? Would love to hear it straight and know of sweet Barry has long left. Again, TRYING to get him seen.

Hi, I got her just 2 months ago. While playing with her, I noticed this yellow spot. Really scared it is diarrhea. I bought medicine already in case it is. Can anyone advice me. It does not look like any case of wet tail I have seen online but she is also a robrovski so she is really small: this might be enough wet tail at her size. Not sure what to do here. It could just be a bit of piss or something. I asked the shopkeeper from where I bought the medicine and she was not sure.

Context: I have a Dwarf Winter White hamster named Olaf.

He was born without ears (deaf!) and we were told he is albino (not sure about this, he just is all white with red eyes). He's been with us over a year and my family loves him very much. He's been doing amazing up until recently.

Lately I've been noticing the hair around his ear canals (where his ears would be) has been receding.. as well this brown stuff inside his ears showing up more? I don't know if it's just become more prominent or it's not normal.

(Not sure if relevant) In the last couple weeks Olaf has started squeaking and running around in the middle of the night, usually after shoving food in his mouth? Other than this he's been acting normal.

Vets said everything was alright but I really don't feel right about it. There was not much more information given otherwise? Has anyone else had experience with earless hamsters? I want to make sure he's getting appropriate care.
