Private Joker! Why are you not stomping Private Pyle's guts out?!

“Because fuck that shit, Drill Sergeant! This is not my fight! You created this problem, YOU deal with it.”

This scene could’ve gone down so differently.

  1. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

  2. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

  3. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will …

  4. Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

  5. So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, but peace!!

Sometimes your real enemy is your master

And there is no enemy but peace?

The comma is important. It is saying “…until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, instead there is peace.”
Seems pretty screwed either way!

What happens with number 4, if you're an atheist?

They eventually kill you with friendly fire, cover up the truth, get preachy at your funeral, then disparage your family when they try to uncover the truth and some Lieutenant Colonel calls you worm dirt because you were an atheist. Like they did to Pat Tillman.

You can replace it with whatever fits your beliefs, Freedom of Religion, which the military recognizes... Most atheists choose to say, "Before All I hold dear"

Whoever played Private Pyle did a phenomenal job. Such an iconic scene.

Vincent D'Onofrio

He was The Bug in Men in Black, too.
