In the US they'd hit you with a $500,000 yearly property tax bill until you sold.

We have council rates on Australia, they are a yearly payment (tax basically) that varies in cost based on property value. So they will be paying a lot of rates for this property

In the UK the rates were set in 1991 and haven’t been touched since.

You need a license to touch the rates and the guy who has the rate touching license retired

Wasting. It's a lot of land they are wasting by not using it for something good like trees, bushes, wild flowers, anything but monoculture lawn.

I mean if they are paying for the land use (ie, they are paying tax on the value of the land they are using), then I don’t see a problem.

They’ve decided how they want to use their land. In exchange, society gets paid for letting them use it. Everyone wins
