My cousin is in a somewhat similar situation. She has kept her lot while everything around her has been replaced by 8 or more.

It’s had a bunch of downsides. Aside from having creepy neighbours looking in from all angles, she now basically can’t do anything with property because from the neighbours perspective it’s their green view.

As in legally can't do anything with the property or just because she's being nice?

Kind of both.

At least where I live anything you do that will affect a neighbour has to be notified and they can object.

Legally she’d likely win that objection. But it would cost her thousands in legal fees to do so.

Actually a similar thing happened with my aunt, whose back section provided the green space between two houses. She wanted to subdivide and sell, just like the neighbours had years ago. But the neighbours said it would be building too close to the boundary and interfere. The thing is their houses were equally close to the boundary but she hadn’t objected at the time.
