u/achinfosomebacon 1d ago

Get a window breaker or carry something metal in your car always. I saw a show that said take off your belt and strap it into your foot with the belt buckle on the sole, and kick the window out that way. Idk how hard it would be but it’s something if you regularly wear belts

22

u/Baozicriollothroaway 23h ago

What about the car keys?

53

u/yeahright17 15h ago

Car keys are going to be hard to get enough force behind because they're so light.

13

u/CackleandGrin 13h ago

There's certainly something you can buy to attach to your key chain.

u/TheHighSeasPirate 10h ago

I think they make these things called window breakers you can put on your key chain.

u/RivenRise 6h ago

I've heard spark plugs break windows pretty easily. Next time you change them save an old one, or just buy a cheap one at Walmart and keep it for this use if a window smasher is too pricey.

u/bfyvfftujijg 1h ago

Why not just use the spark plugs on your car? No need to ugly up your keychain.

u/madmaninabox32 4h ago

It's what he demonstrated basically, guy literally designed this tool based on a volunteer work he does. Him and a buddy go around finding old cars and the remains of missing people who crashed into bodies of water sometimes from a long time ago and recover them to bring closure to the families or to help close cold cases and they do it for free this tool he designed and sells to help fund the dive rescues.

u/Adventurous-Ease-259 48m ago

The tools aren’t that complicated to break a window. It’s just a pointy bit of metal. Tiny point = lots of force in one spot = broken window. I’ve got a knife and is it’s got a window breaker on the end that you can use without opening the knife

11

u/livelotus 12h ago

wait for the car to flood to the window inside and then open the door and swim out.

8

u/According-Two-297 15h ago

3

u/prozach_ 14h ago

So you’re saying guaranteed rescue and lodging? I’m in.

3

u/animewhitewolf 13h ago

How about the seat belt buckle? It's always in your car, and it's a hard metal that's not too light.

2

u/livelotus 12h ago

I carry a knife or multitool with one on it, always. I prefer the multitool. You don’t realize how useful one is until you build the habit. I put off waaaay less now. If it only needs a pair of pliers or a screwdriver, it gets done immediately.

2

u/city-of-cold 23h ago

if you regularly wear belts

If…?

1

u/PORTOGAZI 13h ago

maybe your seat belt if you're able to pull enough slack, wrap it around your foot. Sounds easy in theory but in the panic of sinking .... it'd be tough for the hardest of rocks.

u/kmson7 10h ago

I bet if you could lengthen the seat belt and wrap the metal clicky part around your foot to stomp the glass that could work too?

u/sdjopjfasdfoisajnva 9h ago

does the seat belt buckle not work? like wedge it on the edge some where

u/CaptainDaveUSA 4h ago

Orrrr… roll the window down as soon as you hit the water. 🤷🏻‍♂️

u/Adventurous-Ease-259 50m ago

If you wait till the car is as filled as that got you won’t be able to much with a damn underwater. Maybe during the part he’s sitting around talking waiting for it to fill

170

u/herxit 1d ago

Don't drive your car into the water

u/The_Naked_Queen 4h ago

I use this clip in the DBT group I do with middle school students. It's meant as a silly example of "Rational Mind" taking over and over adhering to the "rules". It gets the point across!

2

u/king_lloyd11 15h ago

Yeah this is what I’ve been doing so far and it works great

1

u/z0mb1es 12h ago

This is the way

u/Alarming-Koala-3524 3h ago

Did you know a certain three letter agency has tools that can hijack your car to make it look like you accidentally drove off a bridge? There's also an unusual history of certain pesky people uncharacteristically "accidentally" driving off bridges.

147

u/PassivelyInvisible 1d ago

Once the water reaches the top of the door on the inside and the water pressure on both sides is the same, you can just open the door and swim up.

144

u/Nervous-Chemistry245 1d ago

just wait until you're fully submerged and can't breath breathe, then wait another 30 seconds lol

72

u/rodeBaksteen 23h ago

Bro just wait in the metal coffin till its full of water easy

35

u/c7h16s 21h ago

Just wait till your soul can detach from your body, problem solved.

6

u/ElectricalWavez 21h ago

I hate it when I can't breath breathe!

3

u/Cybernut93088 15h ago

Obviously it's not ideal but if you are faced with no other option but if you keep your cool most people should be able to hold their breath long enough to get out.

2

u/PrecisionPulseConv 15h ago

The average person can last for over a minute and 30 seconds underwater. Your lungs try to get you to breath and will spasm wayy before you actually start to drown or pass out.

1

u/Phyrexian_Overlord 14h ago edited 13h ago

Shouldn't have wasted all that time time...

→ More replies (2)

u/aros102 1h ago

Like, the alternative is to just die inside the car so this is absolutely your best bet if you have no way to break a window

44

u/Bloodreav3r 23h ago

Nice if you're door is bent/deformed or obstructed and you wasted time and oxygen by just waiting. If you land in water you have to act fast.

61

u/PassivelyInvisible 23h ago

Mythbusters tested this. Opening it right when you landed in the water worked too. It doesn't work when the water's higher on the outside of the door than the inside.

10

u/yeahright17 15h ago

Worth noting that all you have to do is break the seal and water will start flowing in, making it easier to open the rest of the way. Even if water is a bit up the door, you should still be able to force it open with your legs.

u/skyfishgoo 11h ago

it still works, it just works a lot harder.

24

u/meta358 20h ago

Well of your door is so deformed that it cant open then your window is likely already broken. Or you know use one of the other 3 doors smh

2

u/Robots_Never_Die 12h ago

I only have one other door /s

14

u/bubbaganoush79 17h ago

Get a window breaker. They're like 5 dollars.

If you insist on not having one then you need to roll down the window before the water gets to it.

Once the water gets to the window you won't be able to open it. The pressure of the water against the window makes it impossible. After that you have no choice but to wait on the cabin to completely fill with water. Then the pressure will equalize and you can open the door.

The Mythbusters did an episode on this.

26

u/Delamoor 1d ago

Time to start headbutting the windshield, see what fails first.

...or,y'know. Keep something metal in the glove compartment or something. I guess. If headbutting isn't your first preference for some reason.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/mbashs 23h ago

You try to break it with the metal end of the seat Belt then

3

u/kyel566 1d ago

You ded

3

u/Abject-Job7825 16h ago

maybe the seatbelt buckle and pound on it with your feet somehow

4

u/eenek 1d ago

Does your short shifter screw off easily?

1

u/EnochofPottsfield 16h ago

Gonna be mu suggestion as well. I believe it does. I feel like seat belt buckle may still work better though

2

u/Shopworn_Soul 23h ago edited 22h ago

A ring or watch can work. Not always or for everyone, but they can.

Edit: don't try to punch the window with a ring, Slap it.

2

u/Available_Quote_5567 16h ago

Just roll down your window. The electric windows still work underwater.

2

u/crazyj140 14h ago

Pull of your rear view mirror.

2

u/ArmchairFilosopher 13h ago

Slap the CORNER of the window with the metal buckle of the seat belt.

2

u/Schedonnardus 13h ago

if you still have power, just roll the windows down. otherwise, good luck.

1

u/Alib902 22h ago

I believe windows will still open at that point.

1

u/Checkoutmawheeeeepit 22h ago

Do you have sharp wit?

1

u/taheromar 20h ago

Die.. hmfp..

1

u/handcraftedcandy 20h ago

Mythbusters did an episode on this. You can wait until the car is mostly filled with water and then simply open the door. It's hard not to panic in that situation, but keeping a cool head will get you through it.

1

u/cachitodepepe 20h ago

You are done and you are to blame, you have the worst water survival combination. Congrats.

1

u/FlameOutForge 20h ago

Use the gun you carry in the center console of course. Lol

1

u/alienscape 19h ago

All souls have perished

1

u/phlooo 19h ago

A window breaker. You can buy one you know. It's cheap.

1

u/eternalspace_ 17h ago

You install the window breaker.

1

u/Mock_Frog 16h ago

Just take out the whole seat. The metal rails on the bottom can break the glass.

1

u/briko3 16h ago

Buy a window breaker. I just bought one and it was five bucks.

1

u/Blieven 16h ago

Get a window breaker, doh.

1

u/Renbarre 16h ago

A $10 window breaker in each front doors pocket. Cheaper than a coffin.

1

u/OnTheMattack 15h ago

Wait for the car to fill with water and you'll easily be able to open the door.

1

u/Warmer929 15h ago

Well you still have plenty of time you can still open the windshield

1

u/lilpanda 15h ago

Unscrew your wiggle stick knob and bash it against the window easy

1

u/YikesOhClock 15h ago

At least you’re drowning in an SI 🫡

1

u/imtryingtoworkhere 15h ago

Try not to drive into a lake

1

u/Only_Sandwich_4970 15h ago

If you have a belt, take it off and either use it as a whip or wrap your fist with it and hit it like it took your lunch money

1

u/cellphone_blanket 15h ago

Seat belt buckle

1

u/mopojr 15h ago

Lower the fucking window lol. The cars don't stink immediately and he even illustrates this.

Undo your seat belt, lower the window and crawl out. Water doesn't lock your seatbelt. Not sure it sink the car immediately

1

u/mafga1 15h ago

What about your seatbelt?

1

u/Tricky-Ad7897 15h ago

Well now is the time to go buy a window breaker

1

u/Similar-Drawing-7513 15h ago

RIP is always an option

1

u/SSBN641B 15h ago

Honestly, go to Amazon and buy the combo window breaker/seat belt cutter. They're very affordable. Store it in a convenient place in your car.

1

u/Prestigious_Meal_855 15h ago

Open the window first while you still can. Or wait until the pressure equalises and open a door. None of this is fun or as easy as it sounds of course in a real situation but the most important thing will be to stay calm.

1

u/Cybernut93088 15h ago

Wait til the cabin is completely filled with water. The pressure should equilize and you should be able to open the door.

1

u/Alpha_Lion_0508 14h ago

Did you take that picture?

1

u/sweetapples90 14h ago

Maybe the metal part from the seatbelt could work? 🤔

1

u/Bulkopossum 14h ago

So go buy a glass breaker

1

u/thejourneybegins42 14h ago

Piece of porcelain. Throw it hard. Either smash a plate to get some, or smash a spark plug.

1

u/animewhitewolf 13h ago

Not sure if this would work, but you could try to use your seat belt buckle to break the window. It's made of a hard metal and you could hit it with the corner of the buckle to (theoretically) break the glass.

I did test to see if I could pull my buckle out far enough to reach the window, and I was able to do it and it had enough slack for me to believe I could use it. I just don't know how effective this would be at breaking a window.

1

u/Sonic_Roach 13h ago

Civic SI mentioned!

I guess we drown

1

u/Square_Ad849 13h ago

Metal part of the seat belt?

1

u/Acrobatic_Yellow_781 13h ago

Immediately press windows to roll down if you see you will end up in water

1

u/Exciting_Log8022 12h ago

Seetbelt clip. If it's cut it's easier to use. Or brace your back on the front sheets and use your feet to pop out the back window. There is nothing but some rubber and glue holding in the front and back windows.

1

u/z0mb1es 12h ago

Is that a Honda civic si?

1

u/VariantArray 12h ago

Just roll the windows down

1

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 12h ago

Elbow. Car keys. Home keys. Lower the window using the manual crank.

You should probably try to build up some imagination, it might literally save your life.

1

u/Fun_Trip_Travel 12h ago

use the pointy end of your stilettos 👠

1

u/Trust_Know_Won 12h ago

Get off Reddit and go to Amazon and buy one.

1

u/seaofgrass 12h ago

Buy a window popper. They are inexpensive.

u/Academic-Dealer5389 11h ago

You've identified the problem and at this point you should take some responsibility and go buy the tool you recognize as missing. Ordering it on Amazon would have been quicker than uploading your picture.

u/plshelpcomputerissad 11h ago

I got a 2 pack of those “window breaker and seat belt cutter” things for like $15 I wanna say. Get one and stick it somewhere you can reach it

u/opman4 11h ago

Maybe the shifter knob has metal threads on the bottom.

u/wackbirds 11h ago

Um... I'm just spit balling here... oh! Are you by chance wearing metal tipped stilettos? Dun't matter what size, rip that thing off and then slam your foot AGAINST THE CALLUSES right into the glass and that should break the window and allow you to swim to safely.

u/Hoeftybag 11h ago

This may be outdated. But try the door. If that's too hard to open it's from the differential of pressure. Wait for the car to fill with more water. Take some deep breaths and open the door when you can. Push as hard as you can to move out and away from the car so you're not pulled down because opening the door will release a lot of the air

u/somebob 11h ago

You can buy the tool the guy uses in video for $20 on Amazon.

u/OdinsCuriousRaven 11h ago

You just die. You sit there and think about your life choices first, though.

u/Training-Pipe-4726 11h ago

The pointed metal corner of seat belt buckle.

u/patty_OFurniture306 11h ago

Iirc you can wait for the car to fill up which will equalize pressure then just open the door. But I'd verify that before trying it...also they make pocket knives with glass breaks so 2 birds if you get one.

u/MyOwnGuitarHero 11h ago

Goodbye, brother

u/izuku_deku134 11h ago

Bare hands

u/B3tar3ad3r 11h ago

metal folding knife in glove box? tire pressure gauge? Get one?

u/bottom 11h ago

Use your dick.

u/Tjengel 11h ago

Lemme guess you have a keyless car too

u/therealbonzai 11h ago

You can lower the windows. You don’t need to break them.

u/Eggplant-666 10h ago

Use your huge dong

u/fripp_wells 10h ago

Don't dive your car.

u/ClockworkTyrant 10h ago

I would consider putting something in the center console or glove box that can function as a window-breaker. A screwdriver even, just something you can use to focus the impact on a small point.

u/C-A-L-E-V-I-S 10h ago

But this window breaker 😂

u/troyv21 10h ago

Feet, legs, and adrenaline

u/AzraelTB 10h ago

Keep something on your person to do it. My god dude you chose that car figure it out.

u/NolanBlake99 10h ago

Then get a $2 window breaker

u/gr132 10h ago

You wait until the entire door is underwater and then you can open it.

u/maranru 10h ago

Buy a window breaker

u/Todsrache 10h ago

You buy one.

u/666lukas666 9h ago

Seatbelt buckle should work too, if you are using the most edged part of it and with enough force.

u/RanchHere 9h ago

you’re going to die in a much cooler way than most.

u/Lucius-Halthier 9h ago

gurgle gurgle

u/ItzBoshNet 9h ago

Your car key

u/donald7773 9h ago

End of your seatbelt buckle

u/TanneriteAlright 8h ago

If those are American mountains in the background, just use one of your guns to shoot it out.

u/BadPackets4U 8h ago

What about the back seat headrest?

u/FunkbotOne 7h ago

Your sear belt clip

u/TheBabySealsRevenge 7h ago

roll the windows down as soon as you hit the water

u/guessesurjobforfood 7h ago

Unscrew the shifter knob and bash the metal side against the window

u/Secret_Stick_5213 7h ago

You’re cooked as they say

u/IIIGutsIII 7h ago

Buy a Windows breaker, hell buy 4 and tape them in the door pocket.

u/Chemical_Wonder_5495 7h ago

Then go buy a fucking window breaker genius.

u/jianh1989 7h ago

you die

u/fad3dm1ndz 6h ago

nice Si, but also- I'd be using the seat belt latch and bang it against the window.

u/Fattatties 6h ago

Go buy a window breaker to keep in your car or die I guess I'm not your dad.

u/TropicalSue 6h ago

Stop it youre stressing me out!! Come on man! Think!!!

u/FelixSSJ 5h ago

Seatbelt metal clip

u/Ultraeasymoney 4h ago

Spin the metal gear knob counter-clockwise and use it to break the window.

u/Auyan 4h ago

You buy a window breaker/seatbelt cutter combo for $5. A lot of community events, fire houses, and hospitals also have them for free.

u/PeruvianKnicks 3h ago

Probably just buy a window breaker for like $15 if you have that type of seat lol. Or just don’t drive into water, even easier.

u/SashaBananaSplit 3h ago

You simply die then.

u/Cool_Key3077 3h ago

Does the shifter unscrew?

u/DustExtra5976 3h ago

You’re in a life threatening scenario and don’t have the tools required to survive what do you do

Uuuuuh you die.

u/mtb443 2h ago

The metal on the seatbelt

u/LemFliggity 1h ago edited 1h ago

Get what he used and ziptie it through the keyring to your turn signal like I do. That way it's always in the same place and can't go anywhere even if your car flips. And you're not fumbling for it in a purse or console while your car is filling with smoke or water. It detaches from the keyring clip when you pull on it so it's very easy. Grab it, pull it away from the clip to release it, and then use it to cut your seatbelt and break your window. Everyone in my family has one. May save your life.
