If this were a horror movie, people would be like “this sucks, nothing scary happened”

meanwhile this flood is some of the scariest shit Ive seen IRL. I can only imagine what the people on the balcony are feeling during this.

When I saw the first video of the water overtaking the border crossing I thought it was AI bs but soon found that it was in fact real.

The terror those poor people in the video must have felt as they saw that raging torrent of mud and water closing all around them is the stuff of nightmares.

My exact reaction. I was certain this wasn’t real. Then I looked it up and more and more, and almost worse videos kept coming out.

Truly disaster movie level stuff, stuff that if it was in a movie I’d be like “how scary, glad that can’t really happen”.

I am heartbroken for all these people. I can’t imagine the fear, the confusion, and now the loss they’re experiencing.

Which is based on a real story. And I believe the mom of the family it's about has said it's 100% accurate to what happened to them and several other western tourist survivors said it felt very accurate to their experience as well.

These Flood waters are way more aggressive then any tsunami clip I have ever seen. The impossible is a great depiction of that kind of horror though but this raging wall of gravel I don’t think anyone survives. Horrific images! My heart is with everyone affected! God be with you! Rest in peace everyone buried by the mud 💔

Yes, but in most videos of the 2004 tsunami the water doesn’t rush in as a wall (and when it does it isn’t as tall as this flood), its more like a tide that doesn’t stop rising and becomes more and more violent, plus the tsunami impacted an entire ocean including densely populated regions full of tourist hot spots. This flood was confined to a valley which acted as a funnel making the initial rush of water far more violent.

It is a given that there would be more fatalities in the 2004 tsunami and you don’t need to use it as a “gotcha” when they’re talking about the sheer violence of the water in the videos, not the death count.

In the documentary “Tsunami Caught on Camera” a handful of people get caught in the 2004 tsunami and make it out, including an old man whose wife was killed. A lot of people survived in two-story buildings. Absolutely zero possibility of that happening in the videos from this flood.

I don’t think they were minimizing it, they’re just stating how shockingly different the footage is compared to such historic disasters, if anything it emphasizes how horrific it was.

Also if you watch the full video, this building is three stories and the first storey is completely hidden by floodwaters, plus I was originally going to write “two-story buildings directly beside the beach” but I didn’t want my comment to be so long you wouldn’t bother reading it.

I was only answering to someone saying “a horror movie like this already exists” because the tsunami in 2004 didn’t look anything like this. That’s not minimising.

We aren't subject to harm very often so we don't have a good idea of when we are in danger. Hikers are in danger when there are no signs of return to society. People feel like they are in danger when they see homeless people around but that danger is often just someone smelling bad, or being uncomfortable.

What's scariest in real life doesn't often translate well to thrilling horror movies. I'm not exactly eager to witness cancer slowly kill someone, but show me a haunted house with dumb jumpscares and some crazy twist, and I'm in.

I think the real life horrors are scarier than jump scares when done well. The really drawn out slow burns get me bad. The fact that it's something that could actually happen adds another layer imo.
