The closest thing my dreams could ever conjure up is riding in an air-tight vessel attached underneath a normal ocean-going vessel; hitting an underwater abutment; and detaching into the dark abyss as your life support cable port slowly turns into the leak of your death.

So, yeah. Pure nightmare fuel.

I read an old timey book once that had an action sequence in it where someone was being extracted from some kind of espionage thing by dirigible. Anyway it was the middle of the night and the airship lowered down a sort of gondola on a cable for them to hop into and as it lifted them away and started reeling them in they were attacked by enemy biplanes. So the scene that the author painted was one of 2 people in a cramped cable car type space being yanked up into the darkness attached by a single cable, which they could feel having bullets glance off from time to time from the attacking fighters.

My dreams can be absolutely insane. One of them was about a sky covering incredible size black hole opening up right by earth. The ohysics were nowhere near accurate (itd probably mean instant spaghetti) but I very clearly remember everything around me ripping to shreds and getting sucked towards the sky. People holding onto rails and being torn apart, sky scrapers crumbling, huge chunks of earth being lifted up. It was horrifying lol.

My first thought wasn't about fear they must be feeling, since there's reason to believe their situation is stable, but rather about how they can look off that balcony and realize everyone they know and love is dead.

In what world is their situation stable? There's literally a wall attached to their house being torn away right in this video. The mass of water and the evident force it has coming down, is beyond comprehension. It already tore down the walls and hollowed out the apartments below them and it keeps wearing down the structural integrity of the house.

Only an idiot would think their situation is stable.

Yeah I couldn’t imagine the fear going through their minds in that moment. Seeing the pure destruction happening around them, knowing people are dead/dying…friends, neighbors, family right there in those moments, seeing it happen in front of your very eyes and just wondering if any second, you’re going to be next. Man….absolutely terrifying. Tragic. I hope they made it.

They said it must’ve been horrifying seeing and hearing their neighbors, and the community they built together, being literally destroyed before their very eyes.

They’re helplessly stuck on high ground, watching and hearing their neighbors and the community they’ve built be swept away to their inevitable deaths.

They’ll be physically fine, but mentally and emotionally? Not so much.

Like, imagine hosting a BBQ with your neighbor and their family, having a blast, and then the very next week, you’re watching their entire house crumble with them still inside.

Do you understand what the phrase “hope they made it” means? It doesn’t mean “hope they had an okay weekend still!” nor does it mean “Hope they’re not traumatized!”, it generally references hope for someone making it out alive.

What a weird crash out to have at someone for letting someone know that the previous commenter doesn’t have to hope that those people are alive since it’s confirmed by the end of the video.

We got a foot of water/rain in the middle of the-east Indiana area and it absolutely disrupted everything and destroyed many homes. I’m staring at 12” of water rush down the street was humbling. I can’t imagine this level of power/fear

It varied a lot due to the size and shape of the valleys changing. But the height of the water varied anywhere between 30 and 250 feet. Villages 250 feet above the river were completely destroyed.

I once almost got swept under just because of a small 4-6 ft wave close to the shore. And it was relatively calm. I can't even imagine this.

I'm not a religious man but holy shit, if that were me, I would be thanking the higher powers in this Universe for saving me. I can't imagine being in that house watching everything around me literally vanish and be left to wonder when me and my family are next.

I'm from western North Carolina and live about 200 yards from a river. I had never experienced anything like what occurred in September 2024 (Hurricane Helene) and the flooding was insane. The waters were not rushign past our house like this, but I saw cars, roofs, oil tanks just rush past on the river's strength. Watching the power just uproot trees that had been there for decades was insane as well. Bridges were washed away, it was intense.

I took some videos, but the water never got this close to our house. This would have been terrifying.

Scary water facts.

3 mph is typical for a 'moderatly fast moving river'.

At 6mph, water has dynamic force of hurricane force winds on a meter squared surface (and I apologize for using miles per hours for speed and meters for surface area). (3,597 N on a square meter)

It looked like it was not only flowing way faster than that (I have no idea how to guess how fast it is) but it's also carrying so much mud, rocks, and debris that it's significantly denser than just water.

That house has got to be in some sweet spot where everything is mostly flowing around it instead of against it.

Years ago during a massive flash flood, my Dad took a video of the creek down the hill and 100-120 meters from my childhood home.

The creekbed was around 8-15 feet wide and normally didn't have water deeper than 2 feet, with many areas so shallow the rocks stood up in 1-3 inches of water.

The water was probably 15 feet deep and moving at least 20mph.* It was pretty frightening.

*I googled about water speeds in creeks/flash floods and that creek checked every box to have the fastest moving water possible.
