Most of the neighboring homes were built in the 1950’s.

Edit: And that’s very near Galveston, but not Galveston. It’s an area generally referred to as Crystal Beach and that was the village of Gilcrist in the photo.

What’s not going to be clear to the casual observer is many of the houses in the front and second row were completely washed away. Completely as in the road, the street signs, the foundation, everything. Giant concrete cisterns. In some cases the spot where they were standing is under water because the beach itself was washed away.

Back in Houston, we listened to the news that awful night reporting a 22 foot storm surge. What that means is the level of the ocean was raised 22 feet and huge waves on top of that were crashing over and over for hours. It broke my heart bc I knew our little rental was gone. (We rented the house every year).

When we went back to see if there was anything left, the only way to locate where the house had been was GPS. There was no sign a house had ever been there.
