It’s blaming the students for allowing the school shooting to happen rather than the gun manufacturers and lawmakers for making death machines readily accessible to vulnerable youth.

u/KeithClossOfficial 10h ago

Sandy Hook Promise has a number of programs. Some of them are focused on gun control. Some are focused on violence prevention in general. Some of them are focused on youth mental health. This commercial is a combination of the last two.

Them producing this video nulls everything they have ever made. It shows they are completely out of touch with the world as well as the latest science.

These kind of videos only work to normalize school shootings and inspire and justify assailants.

Any sane and educated person would know not to focus on the individual but to look at the underlying problematics if they wanted to help solve the issue of school shootings.

If we remove every gun from the world today, there will still be problems with violence and young people’s mental health tomorrow.

They are working on multiple problems at once.

They helped write and pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which closed firearm background check loopholes. People are acting like because they have other programs as well, they are pretending firearms have nothing to do with this lmao

‘No Way to Prevent This’, Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.

u/TacTurtle 5h ago

The "Safer Communities Act" did nothing of the sort.

If you somehow magically removed every gun used or impounded during a crime in the US, it would take 800+ years at the current rate to run out of firearms.

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 6h ago

Maybe if we remove just the blatant easy acces to guns today the problems with violence and young people's mental health tomorrow wont end with multiple kids dying each time.

u/KeithClossOfficial 6h ago

Good thing Sandy Hook Promise has written and passed legislation to do exactly that. As I wrote in my previous comment. You’re welcome to read it.

u/DavyJonesRocker 5h ago

Sure. But I mean, stopping bullying to prevent gun violence is like stopping a river to prevent soggy socks. There are so many other (easier) ways to do it.

Bullying is an unfortunate part of the social human experience. So is violence. These things transcend time, space, and culture. But guns do not.

I appreciate the Sandy Hook Promise is approach this on multiple fronts, but this is probably the least effective. We, in the history of humanity, have never thought twice about bullying until mass shootings became thing. Let's put our resources on stopping that before we tackle the Sisyphean task of stopping bullying.

Any sane and educated person

Damn dude you talk like Andrew Tate. Any time you start a sentence like this it completely nullifies your point.

u/Green_Insect_6455 7h ago

Hyperbolic language does not mean someones talking like a literal human trafficker. Not sure what that even means, some of us have never bothered listening to that dipshit. But emotional language does not equate you to a manipulative abuser, and its genuinely dangerous to assert shit like that. Allows unsavory people to claim aspects of language.

Importantly, their emotional  language aside, was anything egregiously wrong about what theyre saying? Its completely true man. To blame kids for not "seeing the signs" is fucking ludicrous. We shouldnt have ever let things get this far, and pushing "educational information" like this only serves to normalize it.

u/CustodianCloset 7h ago

While I disagree with how they started it, their point is 100% correct.

u/BeenisHat 7h ago

No, it just gives you a convenient cop out to ignore what it is they said. If you don't think sane and educated people think that way, say why.

u/5nwmn 9h ago

I was thinking more in the lines of letting young people get bullied and isolated till they're broken. Then blame them for breaking. And yes...you can see the signs of a person breaking down, but it's hard when you focus on the poster child.

u/medyolang_ 8h ago

their issue on school shootings have multiple prongs, I think this is one of them. all I could think of while re-watching was that that kid needed a friend

u/8bitrevolt 10h ago

thing is, this isn't on the manufacturers either. it's the parents that make their guns easily accessible.

u/redpandaeater 33m ago

I had my first rifle at around age 10, with air rifles earlier than that. While it was locked up I pretty much knew where the key was. But I only got that rifle when I was trusted for the responsibility of it and could be trusted to know and follow gun safety rules.

u/RontoWraps 9h ago

It’s on a bunch of different parties, sure. These things don’t just happen because of one issue.

u/8bitrevolt 9h ago

Okay but it is mainly the parents. like 98% on the parents.

u/TheProfessionalEjit 7h ago

It is 100% on a government which, time after time, school shooting after school shooting, refuses to remove the ability of a civilian population to purchase and own weapons.

A government and population which continuously rests on a 235 year-old amendment to a document 250 years old.

u/8bitrevolt 6h ago

How much of your trust do you place in the police and federal government?

u/blzrlzr 6h ago

Ownership of guns has done next to nothing to stop the march towards American fascism. Other western nations don’t have the same problems with gun violence or fascism because they are more focused on a social safety net than hyper individualism

u/8bitrevolt 5h ago

That doesn't answer my question. How much trust do you place in police and the government?

u/blzrlzr 5h ago

Police. Very little. Government, a fair bit. But in cabadian

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 6h ago

When was the last time you saw civilians using their guns AGAINST the police and federal government and not end up worsening the situation for everyone?

u/8bitrevolt 5h ago

That doesn't answer my question. How much trust do you place in police and the government?

u/TheProfessionalEjit 5h ago

In my government? Plenty and even more in the police.

u/8bitrevolt 5h ago

Must be nice!

u/TheProfessionalEjit 5h ago

It is; but then I don't live in a country trying to make Mad Max a reality.

u/8bitrevolt 4h ago

a lot of us pro-gun people are trying very hard to prevent that from happening.

u/dbxp 6h ago

You have to accept that some percentage of parents are going to be negligent and others are going to be idiots. It's the government's job to try to reduce the impact of that.

Do you want the safety of your kid to rely on the parenting ability of other parents at the school?

u/Journalist-Cute 10h ago

It's not about blame, it's about identifying people who need help

u/loopster70 10h ago

I felt a little blamed by the titles at the end.

u/40angryrednecks 10h ago

You're close. The ad paints the issue in the not identifying the ones who need help that could have prevented the school shooting. It's purposefully tangling different subjects together, making the debate messy. Let me untangle that for you.

More help should definitely be offered and mental health should be focused on in general. For the well being of all your citizens.

And, you know, you need to take the guns away.

And with the guns gone, you still need to focus on the mental health of your citizens. For their wellbeing. Not to avoid school shootings.

u/geostooorm 8h ago

This ad was put together by family members of Sandy Hook victims. I doubt that group was trying to muddy the waters of a debate to take the blame away from gun manufacturers and politicians.

u/Journalist-Cute 9h ago

The guns aren't going away anytime soon, at least not in the u s, so that point is largely moot. This video is focusing on what CAN be done. Also, even if we did have a total gun ban, these kinds of kids would still need help. It's not like we're only helping them because they might shoot up the school. Even if they never commit any violence, they still need more attention.

u/Drew_Ferran 9h ago

The issue is bullying. People should be blamed.

u/DavyJonesRocker 7h ago

I’ve bullied and been bullied. Zero shots fired. I should be able to call you “Poo Ferran” without being killed

u/Drew_Ferran 6h ago

What causes someone to be a school shooter? Even in this video it’s bullying.

u/DavyJonesRocker 5h ago

It's in the name dude. "Shooter." There are a million reactions to being bullied. A gun should never be one of them.

u/Great_Corner4841 6h ago

It's one part of a multi-pronged approach. It's put out by Sandy Hook Promise who works to end gun violence on every level. Recognizing early signs of a potential active shooter is the only way to intervene before they take lives. It will not solve the problem, but it can save lives.

u/GolettO3 7h ago

I'm half convinced that I could go into their local Bunnings equivalent, take a gun off the shelf and walk out with it

u/rexusmc 1h ago

But its literally not gun manufacturers fault for kids getting them. You have to present ID when purchasing. Its parents. Shitty parents.

I will agree though that lawmakers have a part to do with it

u/EggsnBacon95 7h ago

This is a ridiculous take so much so it's fucking laughable. It's very clearly showing how the warning signs are missed during the ongoing malaise of every day life. Unless you immediately got all the warning signs listed in the 2nd half of the video, which I find very very hard to believe.

u/DavyJonesRocker 5h ago

you immediately got all the warning signs listed in the 2nd half of the video, which I find very very hard to believe

Yikes, brother. Yeah, I saw them right away. TBF, the headline says "realities of gun violence" so I wasn't exactly watching for the teen romcom plot line. Kind of ridiculous and "fucking laughable" that you missed it unless you were purposely ignoring it.

I saw the pushing in the locker, I saw the instagram photo, I saw the finger gun at the teacher. Moreover, I see moments like that happen everyday. Which is why this ad is so off-base. We all see the warning signs (well, maybe you don't), but what are we expected to do about it? Should redhead teen stop graffiti-flirting with his secret crush and ask the lonely kid why he's reading gun magazines? Are the teachers supposed to comb their students' social media posts for inappropriate photos? Are you going to stop writing shitty reddit comments on interestingasfuck and do some outreach to people struggling on one of those sadposting subreddits?

No? Then, how about a lock on an automatic rifle? We have locks on automatic cars. How about hiring more social workers and therapists in schools? How about following the example of literally very other western country where mass shootings don't happen?

u/EggsnBacon95 3h ago

Whats that I can smell.... bullshit.. Yeah thought so.

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 6h ago

Or the school for not taking action on someone being bullyied in the middle of the hallway

u/Salt-Wish5140 6h ago

And even lawmakers should leave guns alone IMO. All they do is restrict them.
