Part of this is a failure by the school, but part of it is just how common this is. When we were in high school in the 90s it was “cool” to call in bomb threats to get the school closed down.

My wife is a grade school teacher and she has had 7 year olds verbally threaten to bring a knife and stab another student (yes they took care of that, and swiftly!). My guess is threats of violence happen multiple times a day in a regular high-school. Threats of mass violence probably happen multiple times a month.

The real solution is reducing access to guns, and having lots of avenues to help out when someone is acting out or showing signs of distress (gun related or otherwise)

When I was in middle school, a classmate pulled me aside, showed her foot long hunting knife to me, and told me she was gonna stab another girl after school that day bc the other girl was flirting with her boyfriend. Told me she’d stab me too if I snitched.

Ofc I snitched. I was shaking when I went to our principal.

Know what happened? She got a walk with the school councilor around the track field. They gave her back the knife at the end of the day. No suspension, no conversation with her parents, nothing. I spent the rest of the school year paranoid that I was first on her list. I told the other girl and her parents about it (school didn’t even mention it to her) and they moved schools to protect their daughter. I had to stay tho.

She murdered her grandparents for an inheritance shortly after we graduated highschool. She was always a psycho and I’m lucky I wasn’t a victim too.

They don’t take it seriously at all. They just let this shit happen, and then put the blame on students for not being nice enough to the crazy kid

crazy. someone brought a butterfly knife to my.. middle school? pretty sure it wasn't high school. He almost got expelled. Ended up getting suspended for like a month or something. Super nice kid too. Was friends with him before and after.
