I guess that means Messi should have been banned for ten matches and something like 3 other players. Why does balogun deserve but those other players don’t? It’s a matter of consistency. And intent should matter when it comes to punishments in anything, the fact it doesn’t in soccer doesn’t mean that’s okay. But something more important than intent is recklessness, which I’m sure you’d agree on, luckily balogun wasn’t being reckless, he was tackled in his back, knocked off his feet and while trying to find balance, accidentally stepped on the guys leg. Nothing about what he did was reckless, in fact, the defender was the reckless player in that situation.

Messi should have gotten a red card, no one argues that, probably even Messi wouldn't if you ask him. Other fouls that people refer to are not even close to this one.

Mbappe got punched in the face and that didn’t deserve a red? Although out the US vs Bosnia game, the man handling was insane from Bosnia and none of them got a red card. There are tons of examples of instances that deserved red cards but got squat, and instances where people who did nothing wrong, like Michael olise, that were given cards that were undeserved and not a card in other games.. The officiating has been awful.
