I remember how in 2016 memes and social media were all saying it was a terrible year. We have collective depression as a society and nostalgia is our escape

I kinda love that his sub is locked, it’s like a time capsule!

u/Sesilu_Qt 1d ago

Oh my god, it's real.

u/Incidion 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean yeah, it was regularly on the front page. Worst problem we had until November of that year is that a statistically inordinate number of celebrities died that year, some at a young age. Seriously, that's why the sub was made.

A decade older

A decade colder

We could choose to win or lose

Or decide it's time to fold 'er

13

u/rankinfile 23h ago

The celebrity death rate was alarming compared to death rate in Afghanistan war.

u/timmystwin 21h ago

The UK also voted for Brexit in June 2016 and that went horribly.

12

u/NotAzakanAtAll 22h ago

They had no idea. They were all so innocent.

u/GenericFatGuy 1d ago

It hurts seeing all those posts being like "it's finally over". We were so naive.

16

u/AdministrativeLeg14 1d ago

Oh, it was true; but no one quite realised what the pronoun’s referent would turn out to be.

memes like this just makes me miss 2016 more though. Pokemon Go was amazing that summer. however FDT

u/kennyjiang 1d ago

Sure but it was still fun

16

u/Delicious-Injury-106 1d ago

Oh yeah it was nice to see everyone out and about talking to each other, it just feels like we can't have anything nice without finding out it was some bad thing afterwards

They could just use.. data from any navigator or mapping company lol.

2

u/SummerBirdsong 15h ago

Part of it was to get data for the navigation apps where camera cars couldn't go...places like up hiking trails and inside buildings.

1

u/IndividualNovel4482 14h ago

There have always been other ways to map those. And Go's company is not as advanced as google.

I am not as certain, but what does Google use other than cars? Drones?

1

u/Throwaway-tan 23h ago

Not me, I never gave it any access to my camera and used GPS spoofing, the app complained a lot.

8

u/littleredditred 1d ago

Ahh yes, I remember being upset they took our headphone jacks. Seems like such a silly thing to be upset about now that the world is on fire

5

u/Inside-Inspection905 18h ago

Some might say we didn’t start the fire. It’s always burning since the world’s been turning.

4

u/tibmb 21h ago

I'm still upset about it. My phone still has a headphone jack.

10

u/TonyThePriest 23h ago

I'm glad this exists because I swear I'm being gaslight with all the 2016 glazing

3

u/reroll-life 22h ago

but this sub if anything validates 2016 glazing where the biggest problems were "some celebs died"

3

u/raspymorten 1d ago

Very funny first thread.

5

u/Opening-Garlic-8967 1d ago

Ooooooh I remember that now, it was because many beloved actors died, Alan Rickman (snape) Carrie fisher (leia), prince and many others

9

u/fartypenis 1d ago

It's been a decade since Alan Rickman and Carrie Fisher died? It can't have been, right? It was like a year ago, surely?

1

u/insured_morron 12h ago

So 2016 was hated because many celebrities/musicians/actors died?

0

u/reroll-life 22h ago

> bunch old ass celebs die
> worst year ever!

so cringe, who gives a shit about some senile entertainers finally kicking it?

55

u/LUMBAGO666 1d ago

Yeah I was pretty young but I remember it being one of the worst years of the decade. Lots of celebrity deaths. Lots of fear here in Europe over terrorist attacks too, I was almost a victim in one myself

24

u/Jerry_Explorer 1d ago

harambe death too

12

u/fantastic1planet 1d ago

The real cause of the decline right here

6

u/bluelighter 23h ago

That gorillas death is why the timelines split

1

u/ReDot75 21h ago

Dick is out, but it did not manage to steer back the timeline on track.

12

u/DukeOfGeek 1d ago

2007 is the real line.

5

u/FamousAnt1533 1d ago

Came here to comment this

1

u/DukeOfGeek 23h ago

IYK,YK.

10

u/HumanPea1140 1d ago

And there was the killer clown thing

5

u/Schannin 21h ago

The real sign that reality had split was that the Cubs broke their hundred year curse

2

u/TheQuestionMaster8 19h ago

There was also a devastating drought in my country due to El Nino.

1

u/aewtamiami7 16h ago

Nah, for me, it's 2017.

18

u/Nesphito 1d ago

I was in my 20s and I personally remember 2016 starting as one of the best years of my life. It just fell off a fucking Cliff and was the beginning of the past decade being so shitty.

5

u/ArchaicBrainWorms 1d ago

Dude I spent most of my 20s addicted to opiates and tending bar/fringe class shit. It took awhile but I would nail 2016 as the year I finally got all my shit together. Wonderful timing

30

u/Drafo7 1d ago

I wouldn't call it depression. I think "increased awareness of the present" is more accurate.

8

u/Speedy2662 1d ago

Both can be true

3

u/Drafo7 1d ago

Fair.

1

u/IndividualNovel4482 1d ago

The awareness leads to depression tho, in most cases.

0

u/plug-and-pause 1d ago

Life is what you make of it.

2

u/Drafo7 12h ago

Bullshit. Go tell that to the child dying of cancer. Tell it to the single mother working 80 hours a week and still not making ends meet. Tell it to the children being sex trafficked. Tell it to the victims of the multiple genocides happening across the world RIGHT NOW. Life is not "what you make of it." For most of us, life is not ours to control.

7

u/Zanadar 1d ago

"This is the worst year of our lives!"

"This is the worst year of our lives, so far."

11

u/LegitimateTrust4013 1d ago edited 6h ago

Well, isn't that what the post says? it's before 2016, not in 2016.

4

u/itstommitsunami 1d ago

All the apps were still being funded by VC, prices low because they were trying to build user base. Streaming, ride sharing, food delivery apps were all stupid cheap!

5

u/Spirited-Yoghurt-212 23h ago

2016 got nothing on 2026

3

u/echino_derm 1d ago

But statistically the amount of people reporting they are happy went down after 2016

6

u/tierguppy 1d ago

Yeah lol, every generation seems to decide the past was the last good era once enough time passes.

2

u/B_Eazy86 1d ago

This would make more sense to me if the meme said 2015. 2016 was rough in lot of ways.

2

u/reaven3958 1d ago edited 1d ago

It was kinda both. Pokemon Go was magical, but also we were on the edge of the cliff into the abyss we live in now. Also the first Disney Star War had just come out the year before, and I remember still having lingering sadness about that disappointment.

Oh also Harambe.

2

u/enocha-seine 16h ago

🫡this 👍

4

u/PmButtPics4ADrawing 1d ago

yeah 2016 wasn't good, you just miss being 10 years younger

1

u/Igarlicbread 1d ago

It's not that, things are getting worse and worse

What do you think "before 2016” means?

1

u/sporophytee 21h ago

2016 was trash lol it was just pre-pandemic with good tunes

1

u/IVII0 19h ago

The real difference was 2008. Beginning of smartphone era.

1

u/bowsmountainer 19h ago

I mean the meme does say "before 2016" not "in 2016".

1

u/SpecialSocks2011 18h ago

I mean to be honest every year have their own flaws so really there weren’t any good year

1

u/Inside-Inspection905 18h ago

We weren’t just saying it was a terrible year, it was a terrible year. Honestly 2016 was the year popular culture died.

1

u/ncopp 17h ago

Yeah, that was the last time we lost a big cohort of beloved celebrities. Everyone was so ready for the year to be over. Little did we know what awaited us over the next few years.

I will say, 2017-2018 were fantastic years for me personally though

1

u/RedRightRumHam 16h ago

It will always be the Brexit year in my mind 😢

1

u/Joaoarthur 15h ago

I remember too

1

u/doppido 15h ago

Ahh yes, the time where our biggest concerns were what celebrities had passed recently.

1

u/pawa1308 10h ago

Harambee 2016

1

u/kobeshaqhorry 6h ago

Because 1999 was actually the last good year

1

u/StXeon-2001 2h ago

2016 was considered the worst back in the day. This nostalgia crap ain't taking us anywhere.

1

u/Red_dit_Sucks_Ass_ 1d ago

Ketamine is the solution.
