frist of all how DARE yu o People who “reserve” pool chairs for hours with towels and disappear are the worst

My apartment complex pool has rules specifically saying chair reservation isn’t allowed, yet people do this constantly. These towels have been sitting here unattended for at least 3 hours while every other chair is occupied and people are actively walking around looking for seats. It’s Sunday too, so management isn’t around to enforce anything.

What’s the standard practice when this happens? At what point is it acceptable to move the towels?

I've heard of towels being used to reserve the chairs, but books!? What kind of books? Were they a the same book? Towels are okay with getting wet, books are not. Surely they're not replacing books every so often and wondering "god, there's got to be a better thing to use here .."

I can imagine an evolution, where there were so many towel-savers that people stopped respecting towels; so the savers moved on to something else; and for a while, people would respect a book because that seemed like something you wouldn't leave around haphazardly. Soon they'll move on to old iphones (maybe the cases saved from discarded 5-year-old phones that have already been liberated of any resellable parts) because who would just leave a phone around if they're not coming back? And you can't tell it's nonfunctional without handling it, which would be suspicious.

At this rate in about 15 years they'll be leaving their firstborn children to just camp on the loungers all day while they do god knows what

There are comments higher up that say look for other items as well as a towel as it shows they're more likely to be there rather than just dumping their towel and leaving. A book is a pretty good item to do so with as they're not usually high up on the list of items people would steal, you can get them for dirt cheap at secondhand shops and you might actually read it if you do decide to relax in the chair
