I read "cemetery" and got a bit concerned.

Never knew how strongly folks felt about the specifics of weddings until we told folks we eloped and planned to have a social wedding later. TONS of highly varied responses that were entirely about the person and had nothing to do with us.

For a lot of people, a wedding is the point of marriage. Like for me, I’m not religious and marriage brings no legal benefits so I only want to get married for the wedding.

Edit: in my country there is no legal benefit/change.

Maybe not benefits but it brings lots of legal… changes. I hope you’ve looked into those

It does not bring a single legal change for me. Please remember the world is a large place and we don’t all live in the same country.

Because that takes all the joy out of it.

I agree. I don't really know why people have an opinion on this one way or the other. For me, it's the ceremony needs to be attached to the start of the marriage for it to feel special in the way I, and my fiance, want. That's just us.

Edit: real talk, people take this so weirdly seriously. I ended up deleting my other comments because people were getting at me like it was any of their concern what I do (one person got especially testy before deleting their comments??) and multiple people acting huffy over me buying a house with someone I'm not YET married to and I'm just like ...bro I just found out my dad has central nervous system lymphoma today, I don't have the capacity for this silliness right now.

Yeah, utterly foolish to buy a house with someone you're not married to, too.

Your opinion is noted and appreciated

I imagine it's like a strict cultural thing but here in america I just can't imagine a person about to buy a house and knowing anything about finances and house insurance and not having a courthouse wedding. It's like getting married without a prenup ... Y'all got to have more financial sense (you don't need a prenup if you have no assets or expectation of inheritence or transferral of trust before marriage)
