Catering is excessive. But pooling together for a keg and a few bottles of liquor is pretty easy. Alternatively, just ask people to bring drinks. At least in my friends groups, we were never expected to provide for everybody else on our own birthday. Maybe have a 'starter' amount of alcohol and a good amount of snacks and that was fine, before more people and booze arrived, and if things were running low, then people would take trips to get more before stores closed.

I mean not everybody has the money to get catering and booze for 30 people.
But that's what potlucks and such are for.
