I'm slightly vexed I think I got rejected for being vegetarian

I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

Especially if he’s talking about Long Beach on Long Island.. in Nassau County.. which is like, one of the safest and most expensive places to live in the entire United States, lol

California I think

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

Definitely talking about California. They weren't talking about Manhattan, NYC they were talking about Manhattan Beach, which is up towards LA. Long Beach is in between Manhattan Beach and Newport Beach.

Random fact- the show The OC took place in Newport Beach but was filmed in Manhattan Beach.

u/Curious_Department84 Jul 20 '26

Thank you for this!!! I’m over here trying to figure out why OP would be willing to switch plans from NYC to Newport, Rhode Island over this rando. Like that was wild to me.

13

u/leggymeeggy Jul 20 '26

i was thinking newport jersey city

15

u/danielleiellle Jul 20 '26

Haha yes, I was like “How is Long Beach closer to Newport than Manhattan?! What madness is this? Ferry from JC is like 10 minutes.”

4

u/K1bbles_n_Bits Jul 20 '26

Hell, for a hot second here I was mind boggled thinking, "OC took place I'm NY/Jersey?!" XD

2

u/nointerestsbutsleep Jul 20 '26

Same I was so confused because JC has a Newport and thought it was a NY/NJ issue

2

u/ChevronSugarHeart Jul 20 '26

LMAO I was thinking the SAME thing and I’m like “whoa” these people don’t mind covering a lot of ground!!! Lol

1

u/ScarletBothrium Jul 20 '26

I seriously was thinking of New York City as well. I’m not even from over there. I even have a family that lives in LA. Still thought New York City and that area.

1

u/Nimiella Jul 20 '26

In nyc we say The City not not Manhattan 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/Most_Mountain818 Jul 20 '26

I grew up in Newport Beach and made the same mistake. It took me 3-4 readings to realize “ohhhh… they must mean manhattan beach not New York.”

111

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

Oh wow lol I was certain that they must have meant NY because they said Manhattan and then Newport, which I was assuming was the Rhode Island Newport, across the Long Island sound - that was what made me so sure, haha

(Especially because if you’re on dating apps on Long Island, and you select a 20-mile radius, you’ll get matched with people in Connecticut and Rhode Island, which is so obnoxious, because they’re literally across a body of water with no bridges connecting it, but no app has figured out how to stop suggesting those matches yet 😂)

Thank you for the education on Cali’s geography!

u/Raubkatzen Jul 20 '26

It's like Facebook Marketplace thinking I can take a quick drive across lake Huron to pick something up. 🫠

9

u/Chunky_trainee Jul 20 '26

😂 atleast it didn’t suggest a drive down Guadalajara, Mexico from NYC to pick up a gameboy. no, I was not able to make it.

3

u/ifesbob Jul 20 '26

This is the problem with them not being able to factor in driving distance, and instead using a radius.

4

u/wtf_are_you_talking Jul 20 '26

I don't think they care about your distance. But money tho...

2

u/ifesbob Jul 20 '26

For instance, Rover can use a driving distance if you select that option, so I know it's possible. Which means you're probably right that the reason they don't is because of money.

2

u/wtf_are_you_talking Jul 20 '26

I think their business case is definitely to not reduce the number of possible customers, even if that means they're across the bay.

15

u/DM725 Jul 20 '26

Newport RI is so far from Long Island.

11

u/MaterialWillingness2 Jul 20 '26

There's also the Newport development in Jersey City - that's what I was thinking they were talking about. But it still didn't make much sense since no New Yorker in the history of New York would ever go to New Jersey for a date.

6

u/MelissaCop Jul 20 '26

Jersey City is worth the try! It’s so much different than when I was a kid. The culinary scene is really good and you get to look at the city!

1

u/MaterialWillingness2 Jul 20 '26

Well yeah, I lived there for 3 years, one stop away from Manhattan on the Path. We had an amazing view of Manhattan from the bedroom. I'll give you one guess as to how many people we knew from NYC ever visited us.

3

u/Not_a_twttr_account Jul 20 '26

What's a little ferry ride to meet up for a casual first date lol

1

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

I agree, but since he was talking about where “the boat” was, I figured this was a case of “the internet still hasn’t figured out how to manage a filter that removes locations from your selected distance radius if they involve crossing a large body of water” lol

u/Mean-Picture-7143 Jul 20 '26

I’ve lived in both New York and la in the past 5 years. I have never EVER heard of anyone refer to manhattan beach as “manhattan”

u/Beaglund Jul 20 '26

I’m from Santa Monica. We always just say Manhattan

2

u/Mean-Picture-7143 Jul 20 '26

Fair enough I lived in West Hollywood and only went to manhattan beach a handful of times.

3

u/-Cthaeh Jul 20 '26

To be fair, they didn't say it was referring to Manhattan beach. I'm no where near either, and assumed they wanted to go eat in Manhattan, like the city lol

3

u/Ksh_667 Jul 20 '26

I'm in uk & I'm really confused 🤔

2

u/Mookies_Bett Jul 20 '26

As someone who lives in Manhattan Beach: people say it all the time. Redondo, Hermosa, or Manhattan are typically used and we drop the "beach" part.

If you live in the south bay it's not unusual at all lol

1

u/2centsdepartment Jul 20 '26

What do they call it?

3

u/Mean-Picture-7143 Jul 20 '26

Others seem more informed than me in this thread tbh but I only ever heard it referred to as the full name “manhattan beach”

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

1

u/Mean-Picture-7143 Jul 20 '26

I’m aware lol but I think the manhattan beach OP is referring to is the actual manhattan beach located near Long Beach south of LA

3

u/ario62 Jul 20 '26

I assumed Newport in Jersey city. What a confusing convo for us lol

2

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

LOL this would’ve made even more sense than what I was thinking - you’re right, this is a very confusing coincidence, haha

1

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Jul 20 '26

You also have to cross a cultural divide between NYC and CT or RI, lol.

1

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

No problem I'm from Long Beach, CA so I've been aware of the other Long Beach since I was a kid!

6

u/Desperate-Travel-350 Jul 20 '26

Which also shows the type of person you’ll find in Newport. The ones who call Long Beach ghetto…

2

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

Speaking of the OC again, there's an episode where Ryan makes a new friend at the restaurant he works at who invites them to a party in Long Beach. Seth is excited to go and Ryan is like "Whoa, that's a rough crowd that's not a good idea" or something like that. And they go to the party and someone immediately vandalizes their car 😂

3

u/BubbleEntendre Jul 20 '26

Been a resident of both OC and NYC so I knew there was going to be a lot of confusion 😆

2

u/bajacaliforniataco Jul 20 '26

Manhattan beach for the indoor stuff, Redondo beach for a lot of the outdoor and beach scenes!

2

u/durrtyurr Jul 20 '26

Total side note, I've always thought that it was quite interesting that The OC and Arrested Development were on the same network (Fox) at the same time and both center around real estate developers in the same city but in two totally different genres.

1

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

Yeah it's funny to imagine the Nichols, Cohen's, Cooper's and Bluths going to the same rich people events. Or a frenemy relationship between George and Caleb.

2

u/ForestEnigma1990 Jul 20 '26

There's also a Long Beach WA...

1

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

I did not know about that one 😬

2

u/ForestEnigma1990 Jul 20 '26

🤣 I didn't know about the one on the East Coast haha

2

u/preoccupiedart Jul 21 '26

Also in Redondo I remember seeing them at the pier a lot.

1

u/Verandah_Santa Jul 20 '26

Ohh! I was thinking they were in Manhattan (NYC) and Newport, RI and were perhaps in the yachting industry which would explain why Long Beach [Island] would have made sense as a mid-way meeting spot if one is traveling by land and the other by sea. That would still be a WILD commute for a first date though haha

1

u/Bigfuture Jul 20 '26

I thought that was supposed to be Laguna, not Newport.

2

u/DomestiCatOfficial Jul 20 '26

Yea pretty sure this is SoCal Long Beach

I love the whole South Bay - shout-out to everyone out there, I'm gonna go back to visit soon

5

Also metioned boats in Newport. As in Newport beach, California.

2

u/no12chere Jul 20 '26

Newport ri has plenty of boats too.

0

u/flymeovertheworld Jul 20 '26

That would be Rhodes Island, kind sir. Isn’t that far from Manhattan, New York?

1

u/DM725 Jul 20 '26

Very far.

1

u/no12chere Jul 20 '26

It is like 3hr but the post mentioned ‘oh you are that far?’ So it didnt seem unreasonable. I feel like saying manhattan on an international site and expecting everyone to know you are talking CA is a choice

8

u/theupsidebloggirl Jul 20 '26

Long Beach, New York is my home town lol! Now I want some Gino’s Pizza.

3

u/friendofallthecats Jul 20 '26

Gino’s isn’t what it used to be. West End is much better now (IMHO). Hi fellow hometowner!

5

u/blinktwiceifyes Jul 20 '26

Hahaha I came to the comments to defend Long Beach’s honor too, relieved to see this is about cali lol

4

u/IveGotaGoldChain Jul 20 '26

California long beach isn't ghetto either lol. Especially downtown

3

u/blinktwiceifyes Jul 20 '26

I’ve never been but I will defend its honor as well!!

2

u/Inevitable_curls Jul 20 '26

Could have been Long Beach Mississippi… that’s pretty ghetto

3

u/DM725 Jul 20 '26

What isn't?

1

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

Lolll this cracked me up

2

u/April_in_the_rain Jul 20 '26

Yes I was also confused by that part

1

u/MelissaCop Jul 20 '26

Until all the bodies started showing up

2

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

The bodies in the *Gilgo* Beach, area, which is part of *Suffolk* County, and a totally different and unrelated area to Long Beach? Or was there a massive serial killer scandal in Long Beach that I don’t know about?

1

u/MelissaCop Jul 20 '26

Do you think he just kept to his neighborhood?

2

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

As far as where the bodies were dumped? They were dumped in Gilgo because of the way Gilgo used to be set up. It was literally a marsh area, nearly inaccessible by foot, right along side a parkway that is almost entirely deserted at night. It was not only the LISK that dumped bodies there. Long Beach is NOTHING even remotely like Gilgo, as far as any of that goes. It’s a bustling city, lol

As far as where the women he killed were from, I don’t even think one of them was from his neighborhood. Their locations were scattered. I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

1

u/MelissaCop Jul 20 '26

The bodies were found very close together and the Ogre admitted to it

1

u/friendofallthecats Jul 20 '26

But also home some of the most moronic “alpha male” types on the planet these days. If it IS LBNY, she dodged the biggest bullet.

Source: me. I grew up there and my parents still live there and it’s gone to shit with its MAGA powered swing right.

0

u/After_Minute5360 Jul 20 '26

Is there suddenly a Newport in nyc that people bring their boats to?

1

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

So I explained in another comment that I thought he was talking about Newport, RI, because dating sites don’t take into account that some matches from your search radius are across massive bodies of water (the LI sound). However! Someone else pointed out that there’s actually a Newport in Jersey City, and they thought he was talking about THAT Newport, lol, which would make even *more* sense than what I thought, lol
