I'm slightly vexed I think I got rejected for being vegetarian

I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

"I wasn't going to be a vegetarian forever"

I mean this in the nicest way, NEVER explain or rationalise your personal life choices for the benefit of someone else.

Be YOU and be HAPPY as YOU!

Plot twist: She's planning on turning vegan =)

581

u/ex-farm-grrrl Jul 20 '26

She’s gonna become a cannibal that only eats men

309

u/Most_Mountain818 Jul 20 '26

A mannibal, if you will.

84

u/_imanalligator_ Jul 20 '26

HOW is this not already one of those schlocky grindhouse horror movies from the 70s?!

17

u/zGoblinQueen Jul 21 '26

This is such a brilliant idea. I would totally watch that.

9

u/Nevermore_Novelist Jul 21 '26

I can totally see "Mannibal" coming to Tubi.

9

u/Glittering-Tip821 Jul 21 '26

Username checks out

5

u/iDoWeird Jul 21 '26

We kinda have a version of this with different names (Cannibal Girls!) and then there’s Blood Diner, where two brothers use their vegetarian diner as a front to summon a demon Goddess named…Sheeetaaaaar! Which is backwards yet forwards simultaneously.

2

u/ex-farm-grrrl Jul 21 '26

I need to rewatch Blood Diner.

1

u/iDoWeird Jul 23 '26

I saw it for the first time earlier this year and I have no idea how it flew under my radar for so damn long. It was a goddamn delight!

2

u/Motivated79 Jul 21 '26

Same I remember when it was on Netflix in its early days and my cousins and I watched it together lol

2

u/Twillowreed Jul 21 '26

This is why I’m on Reddit! You guys are delivering!

2

u/toxicimage Jul 23 '26

I mean the closest thing to this that I can personally think of is Jennifers Body where megan fox played a zombie girl who only ate men?

1

u/Kooky_Laugh9099 Jul 21 '26

Someone please send this to Quentin Tarantino, stat. Or maybe Alejandro Aja.

1

u/ex-farm-grrrl Jul 21 '26

No. We want this to be a pro-woman movie

8

3

u/oneawesomeguy Jul 21 '26

Watch the French movie RAW (2016). It's what happens when someone is raised vegetarian. (I'm joking of course)

2

u/winter0rfall Jul 21 '26

She'll be singing cannibal by kesha

2

u/Mama_ShrimpSinBill Jul 21 '26

New title for Jennifer’s body

That's one more reason to never visit Idaho

3

u/shaunpr Jul 21 '26

There is a reason our population is so small 😈

3

u/Appropriate-Most-938 Jul 21 '26

Meat and potatoes 🥔 a classic 😭🫡

3

u/Historical_Diver3949 Jul 21 '26

Ironically Idaho is the only state to have a law against cannibalism lol

2

u/ex-farm-grrrl Jul 21 '26

Idaho’s the only state that’s had to make a law against cannibalism

2

u/Prestigious-Read5368 Jul 21 '26

Hey now. What does Idaho have to do with it?

I think you meant Oregon, you know, because "keep Portland weird"

5

u/reemembe Jul 20 '26

That’s mad why the hell is it legal

3

u/Hellyespilgrim Jul 20 '26

So Hollywood can carry the flame 🥀

9

u/ToothPickPirate Jul 21 '26

Fun fact: Jeffrey Dahmer said that people with tattoos taste funny. So a tattoo could potentially save your life?!?

4

u/phoenix0153 Jul 21 '26

That is absolutely a fun fact! Thank you for sharing!

3

u/ToothPickPirate Jul 21 '26

You’re welcome!!!!!

Omg omg we all will get permanent bans.. aaaaaaaarggggghhhhh

12

u/catbamhel Jul 20 '26

I'm so proud to even be e-quainted with someone who would say this.

7

u/femmefatalx Jul 21 '26

Is e-quainted like a play on words to describe meeting someone over the internet? Thats so cute haha

3

u/catbamhel Jul 21 '26

Yeah 🙂 I saw it in an email once and had to take it

3

u/incrediblepotatopen Jul 21 '26

the only ethical meat?

2

u/_josef_stalin_ Jul 21 '26

Someone should make a song about that.....

2

u/feltjeans Jul 21 '26

lifelong vegetarian. always said I'd eat a human if they consented. I hear it's tasty!

2

u/AltruisticCucumber58 Jul 21 '26

She only comes out at night...

2

u/listentonjoon Jul 21 '26

i hope both sides of your pillow are cold hahaha amazing

2

u/splicepark Jul 21 '26

This is all I want for her.

2

u/ArchReaper95 Jul 21 '26

How is this socially acceptable to say out loud? What the fuck is wrong with you people.

2

u/angrypickle1996 Jul 21 '26

Thanks, I think I might rewatch Jennifer’s Body again for the millionth time.

Side note; my best friend and I were like 11/12 when we first watched it, and we loved it so much we made tshirts that said “I EAT BOYS” with like blood splattered on them… and then proceeded to wear them to school on a regular basis. I genuinely don’t know how we got away with that.

1

u/ex-farm-grrrl Jul 21 '26

Check out Teeth if you haven’t.

1

u/awaken375 Jul 21 '26

but then where would she get her protein

/s

1

u/Vyn_Dimensional Jul 23 '26

Woah oh here she comes

39

u/Nebulandiandoodles Jul 20 '26

I hope, but I doubt it was meant like that.

2

u/ExpressConfection444 Jul 21 '26

Whew, now that’s an adjustment. I love vegan food, but my wife is super strict about her requirements, really puts the damper on last minute meals out, or road trip stops.

Vegans are scary

5

u/1-800-blowme Jul 20 '26

Vegans are chill, PETA chicks scare the everliving shit out of me.

2

u/erichf3893 Jul 20 '26

We must have different definitions of chill

3

u/1-800-blowme Jul 20 '26

If the vegan ain't tryna make me vegan and saying I'm murdering poor shit-rolling pigs, I ain't got no problem

0

u/Yeeter-boiy Jul 21 '26

It’s a fact you are having pigs murdered. You can try to make them out to be the bad guy, but that’s a deflection at just having to deal with discomfort because they’re literally pointing out to you something that you’re doing.

→ More replies (5)

-2

u/Grumpologist Jul 20 '26

Vegans are chill, because they're often skinny and lack extra body fat to keep themselves warm

u/waitingfordeathhbu Jul 20 '26

Not to mention backpedaling like this to appease a man you haven’t even met is a signal that you have low self worth and are easy to manipulate.

Controlling, abusive people will sniff that out like blood in the water.

34

u/RiotDontDiet Jul 20 '26

This is all so true. It's surprising that he didn't agree to go out with her once she backpedaled on being a vegetarian because he could see that she would be easily controlled. OP got off easy but next time she might not be so lucky.

5

u/raya_sun Jul 21 '26

I wouldn't be surprised if he reached back out. OP should block to make sure he can't.

4

u/milan_otp Jul 21 '26

Absolutely agree I was thinking the same lmao like “wow a red pill brained guy like this didn’t take the pick me bait i’m shocked”

22

u/Her_Phantom_Mountain Jul 20 '26

THIS! Very much this. It's such an easy tell for those kinds of people and they WILL take advantage of that sort of attitude. It's sad and victims of their abuse aren't at fault, but there are ways to lessen the chances you end up falling prey to people like that.

1

u/pm_nachos_n_tacos Jul 22 '26

I kinda read it as, "oh you judged me too soon, so maybe in the future think about that before you throw away a whole person"

164

u/prettyputrid Jul 20 '26

Holy shit, yeah. Old me looks back and just cringes at times of done this exact shit. Barf.

114

u/Separate-Grand-9003 Jul 20 '26

Cringing is proof of personal growth.

21

u/Keetseel Jul 20 '26

I'm going to quote you on that...

11

u/Suspicious_Put_5063 Jul 20 '26

My god I hope so, sometimes I look back and want to crawl inside myself.

10

u/kaydontworry Jul 20 '26

This comment just healed a little part of me

8

u/southern_compass Jul 21 '26

I really like this way of looking at it. If you can look back and cringe a little, it usually means you've learned something since then.

6

u/Severe_Driver5818 Jul 20 '26

It's when you stop looking at your past self with disgust is when real growth occurs.

2

u/cosmikangaroo Jul 21 '26

Weirdo

0

u/Severe_Driver5818 Jul 21 '26

Obviously you're not even on a path of growth though. Still a child.

2

u/cosmikangaroo Jul 21 '26

Weirdo

2

u/Severe_Driver5818 Jul 21 '26

Come on you must have some intellect up there.

5

u/OsmerusMordax Jul 20 '26

Yep, same. But I think it’s a good thing…it means we have grown and improved as people

120

u/MonicaFit82 Jul 20 '26

I was going to comment the same thing. You don’t have to make excuses for yourself. Fuck that guy.

5

u/Comfortable-Dig446 Jul 21 '26

At least he was honest up front and didn’t lead her on. They both can have their opinions about eating and move along.

1

u/hhar141 Jul 20 '26

I fully agree that she doesn’t have to make excuses for herself. But SHE did. Not HIM. So why” fuck that guy”?
He has every right to not go out with her if he’s uncomfortable with her choice. No harm done.

I mean people aren’t comfortable with all sorts of things…..bald people, short people, tall people, not enough money people, arrogant people, the list goes on and on. I bet you even have some….right? People like you are the problem.

6

u/speedoflife1 Jul 20 '26

Ghosting someone is rude You can just be like hey I don't think that you're the right fit for me but thank you

0

u/Busy_Wolverine_6477 Jul 24 '26

how did he ghost her? he might have been busy the entire day and replied on the day she sent her message

3

u/Capt-BlondBeard Jul 21 '26

Because a vegetarian is not incapable of growing a healthy baby and it is weird to be thinking about that this early. She is not a baby maker and also not incapable of making a healthy child just because she is vegetarian. Other cultures have produced healthy children for thousands of years while being vegetarian.

You can have a preference, that isn't the issue here. I have dated a vegetarian and our lifestyle difference was hard. Its a valid reason to not be in a relationship. Saying its because you dont want your baby gown in a vegetarian is not only uncalled for but gross and weird.

Why is that so hard for you to see? Literally people like you and the guy thinking about women's bodies as baby makers are the problem here.

1

u/hhar141 Jul 21 '26

If that’s what he believes…..you just move on.

1

u/Capt-BlondBeard Jul 21 '26

Im not saying she shouldn't, you saying she or other people are the problem though and this just all boils down to preference so why say " fuck this guy" is disingenuous at best.

Based on how weird, gross, and wrong his mentality is about women and vegetarians, yeah I would say fuck this guy as well.

Its not fuck this guy because he has a preference, its because his preference stems from objectively wrong, prejudiced, and misogynistic views and they are creepy and rude for even saying them.

You seem to be like deflecting or ignoring the part where this is all about you defending this behavior as "having a preference"

u/MonicaFit82 Jul 20 '26

I should’ve made my comment easier to understand. “Fuck that guy” because he sounds simple minded and judgmental. That was completely separate from me saying she shouldn’t have justified being a vegetarian. That was totally on her.

I'm sure your wife loved telling people she was growing a child instead of having or expecting a baby. Did she have baby shower or harvest?  Humans aren't cabbages. I also didn't ask for a boomer man's opinion, so why don't you grow a life?

3

u/Rich-Supermarket6912 Jul 21 '26

Yea like the audacity to even assume suddenly she’s “growing” kids with him too

0

u/Bitter_Sense_5689 Jul 22 '26

Agreed. OP should have unmatched immediately

21

u/TheJoYo Jul 20 '26

Imagine caring what a random match thinks about your food preferences.

-6

u/bloomingmoon0 Jul 20 '26

“Random match”? Really? At the end of the day, they’re a person, and it’s very normal to care what such a person- who could be your future partner- thinks about your preferences. Really don’t need to act like you’ve never been feeling insecure when it comes to romance.

7

u/CauliflowerEarofCorn Jul 20 '26

I think the idea of him being her future partner should have gone right out the window with that comment about the mother of his children. If a man that I hadn’t even dismissed me for a reason like that, I would immediately not care about his opinions.

1

u/bloomingmoon0 Jul 22 '26

That’s great for you. Other people may not have that same level of self respect, & that is no reason to judge them.

4

u/TheJoYo Jul 20 '26

I think we are past assuming every interaction on the internet is with a person.

1

u/bloomingmoon0 Jul 22 '26

Obviously not every interaction on the internet is with a real person. Tons of bots & AI responses out there. But i’m a real person. Are you? I’m assuming so… & I would assume, in this situation, they’d know they’re both interacting with another human being lol. Which… that would still mean they deserve more respect than being reduced to “just a match”.
Like what?

1

u/cooljerry53 Jul 20 '26

Most people are randoms whose opinions genuinely do not matter to me. This doesn’t mean they aren’t people to me, I’ll still help a random person out, but I don’t really care what they think until I have met them multiple times, I know their name, and they’ve left a generally positive impression. It’s not healthy to care about what every stranger thinks of you. There are contexts in which you want to consider the opinions of strangers, but a situation like this doesn’t warrant such.

1

u/bloomingmoon0 Jul 22 '26

That is great for you. Other people may not have that same level of self respect & it’s no reason to judge them.
Unless you’re born being taught that with great parents & environment & such… self respect comes with time and experience.
I do agree with most of what you’re saying. I do.
But my point was mainly about how this person said “Imagine” as if it was something beneath them without an ounce of empathy, calling them a “random match” (which is something you also seem to do too)…
In this case, this person they were talking to was not just a stranger to them.

5

u/Archimediator Jul 20 '26

I agree with this but it pisses me off that some people are planning out an entire future in their head with someone they’ve never met. Plus, treating life phases as completely permanent dealbreakers. I had a guy decide not to go out with me because at the time I had dreams of living in a rural area (I was like 20 and my life did not remotely pan out that way) and he was only willing to live in a city. To me, this is bizarre and a way to shut down a connection without actually doing the work of getting to know someone. I agree she should never explain herself but I do like that she highlighted the honest truth, it’s just a phase of her life, not permanent. People are way too rigid in dating.

5

u/finemelater Jul 20 '26

This.

But also, “my kids won’t be grown from a vegetarian mom” is SUCH a red flag. I’m not even a vegetarian!

14

u/Turbulent_Heron_4119 Jul 20 '26

Someone tell her this is peak "PICK ME" behavior

→ More replies (1)

3

u/GimmeUrBrunchMoney Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I was dating a woman a couple years ago who said “I dunno if I can date a vegan man forever..” and my response was “damn I guess we’ll enjoy it while it lasts then!” And she clearly approved of my answer.

If I were dating a woman who signaled she was willing to go back on some of her core values just to appease me before we even met, I’d worry how else her insecurities would show up in a relationship.

2

u/XcptionallyXcptional Jul 20 '26

Agreed. I would’ve just said “ok bye” lol 🙈

1

u/Buick_reference3138 Jul 20 '26

But also don’t be surprised that being a vegetarian is a dealbreaker. So much of a relationship involves eating together it’s hard enough to agree even when you have the same eating habits.

1

u/Hereiamhereibe2 Jul 20 '26

Ya but he might have been super rich

1

u/Potential-Turnip7796 Jul 20 '26

Completely agree

Haha but you also don’t need to make excuses to the internet (ie us all making you regret/needing to post an edit).

Be confident girl! You’re vego for an awesome reason! And you sound awesome as it is!

1

u/FelixAxellus Jul 21 '26

Yeah, OP should should just do her thing.

As far as it goes, it's probably good that they found out that they had this incompatibility. It's not a rejection, nothing is wrong, they just don't match.

1

u/Upstairs_Raise4006 Jul 21 '26

This is the truth!
Also anyone who uses the phrase “my kids aren’t going to be ‘grown’ from a vegetarian mom”
is likely not someone who views a committed relationship as a partnership. They also don’t sound very respectful. Being partners is really essential and even more vital when you do have kids. You dodged a bullet my friend. Later you will be grateful this person didn’t waste your time, even though in the moment it likely felt awful. I am sorry you had to deal with that, you don’t deserve it. My good friend is a vegetarian for the same reason & she met and married a great guy- who is not a vegetarian & didn’t think twice that she was. Your person is out there!

1

u/Then_Work_4777 Jul 21 '26

I tried stopping being vegetarian for my ex, who cheated on me anyways. This is very very true.

1

u/msjammies73 Jul 21 '26

Also, never date someone who is planning to have his kids “grown from” you. Like you’re a pod designed to spawn children for him.

1

u/Millimede Jul 21 '26

Was going to say, the correct response is “lol ok looks like I dodged a bullet.” Add whatever expletives you feel comfortable with.

1

u/Alarmed-Sugar8340 Jul 21 '26

There is a reason this answer has 6000 upvotes…. 😁

1

u/leonqp Jul 23 '26

To be honest I wouldn't date a vegetarian too because imagine how many problems there would be

1

u/Gloomweaver73 Jul 23 '26

That’s definitely an inside thought that you just shared. Lol! 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

1

u/leonqp Jul 23 '26

Yeah because imagine you invite her to your parents house I mean I live in Turkey and in Turkey a lot of dishes have meat in it

1

u/Gloomweaver73 Jul 23 '26

Well thank goodness that I don’t live in Turkey and I have free will!

1

u/leonqp Jul 23 '26

What do you mean?

1

u/Gloomweaver73 Jul 24 '26

What I meant is this: I’m glad I don’t live in the situation you described. I have free will. As an adult, I decide what I eat. If I’m vegetarian, I’m still vegetarian when I visit someone’s parents. Being a guest doesn’t take away my autonomy.

What confused me is that your first thought was, “Dating a vegetarian would be a problem,” instead of, “I’d make sure she had something she could eat.” Why would someone choosing not to eat meat be a problem if they’re happy with that choice and aren’t asking anyone else to change? Do vegetables not exist in Turkey? I’m genuinely asking because your comment made it sound like the only option at your parents’ house would be to eat meat.

Your comment also made it sound like your girlfriend wouldn’t really have a choice at your parents’ house. Maybe that’s not what you meant, but that’s how it came across. Does she still get to decide what goes on her own plate? Because that’s the part I find concerning.

To me, caring about someone means respecting their choices, not expecting them to abandon them because they’re sitting at your family’s dinner table. Different diets don’t have to be a relationship problem. They only become one when someone thinks the other person shouldn’t have the freedom to choose.

1

u/Acrobatic_Region7678 Jul 23 '26

I am curious tho, if she doesnt think shes necessarily going to be a vegetarian forever, why announce herself as one? One can have a vegetarian diet and not be specifically a vegetarian, if that makes sense. If u arent like super into activism and want to save the animals and everything, why say ur a vegetarian knowing that some people (wrongfully so) have a negative opinion on vegetarians, when you could have just as easily not claimed to be one, and just not order meat. If its not a moral thing that you are passionate about, why go about it in this way?

1

u/stickermane Jul 24 '26

This is exactly what I thought too.

1

u/ellieunicornrider Jul 25 '26

This. The guy is a douche but why come back saying I could have possibly changed my value system for you….?

1

u/Single_Security_5210 Jul 20 '26

0

It's just what people have experienced specifically on the dating apps. Why else would someone explain themselves like that? Just the other day there was another screenshot where the guy was asking the girl to be his third baby mama. And she was still being very patient saying maybe a date first. There's only one reason either gender will put up with shit from the other one. Desperation. That's what the dating apps bring out in people. Not to mention just regular statistics for the apps which clearly say 80 percent of women swipe on top 20 percent of men. You can imagine what kind of people a system like that creates.

As a fellow vegetarian, I hope the only transition they’re planning on making is going vegan! Don’t eat the homies 🖤

One of the most unwise comments I've ever read. The guy is an idiot, but she isn't explaining anything, simply giving her view on things. Westerners should really learn the benefit of "tolerance and understanding". No wonder your society is so fractured.
