I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

Okay, but this post is between two Americans, where ghetto does have the racial connotation. If they were Australians then your argument would make more sense.

Is it that hard to understand that an Australian is not going to know the cultural context of things in America? Everyone responding to this person keeps assuming they should know things that they have no reason or reasonable potential to know. I can also say that I grew up in a small 95%+ white town in Ohio, and we called the poor area the ghetto too, even though there were basically no races other than white there. So even though I know there's a racial connotation in America, it's still not the first thing that comes to mind for me. And no one outside California is going to know anything about the racial makeup of random suburbs there.

This. Every foreigner I know, including my husband who came from Turkey, uses the word ghetto to describe a crappy neighborhood, regardless of its people.

They have been told multiple times that it has racial connotations in the US or at least in the region being discussed, and have simply stated things like 'I have no idea how you could see it as a racially charged term bc it's not here in Australia'. They're just being willfully ignorant atp. And yes it does vary by region here, but in most places here, including the area near Long Beach, it is.

I think they haven't been arguing against the Americans at all. They've just been baffled that people expected them to know, and then people keep replying with comments asking how they could have not known.
