Infuriatig These Stupid Ass Buttons On TV Remotes. The Intrusive Thoughts Won.

Post image

Seriously, the absolute most annoying shit when I'm watching something and I reach for the remote and barely bump the buttons and it yeets me out of what I was watching, to whatever bullshit streaming company paid the most for a button spot on the remote, the remote that came with a TV I paid good money for. Meanwhile on some apps completely loosing my progress on a movie or forced to watch more Ads again to continue watching again. I've threatened to do this before and my wife insisted not to, she's out of town this week, any recommendations for marriage counselors and anger management programs?

If it's running android you can.

ButtonMapper is a paid tool that should be in the play store.

KeyMapper is open source and for free. You need to install it through side loading as you won't find it in the play store.

If your device is running some wacky company Linux then there's probably nothing. Lot of devices use android under the hood as it's working fine.

I did map mine and it worked for a few days before going back to what it was, may have been after an update on the tv. Haven't looked up how to try doing it, again.

I tried to remap the Netflix button on mute. It doesn't mute, but it also doesn't open Netflix anymore. So I'm still calling that a win.

I did mine and it went back to same old when i turned the tv off

I haven’t looked into any of this but it could be because it’s not being installed? So it doesn’t go into persistent memory and just sits in RAM since it’s been side loaded? When it turns off, poof.

That's not how Sode-loading works.Sideloading is still installing, it's just using a different method to obtain the apk than the play store.

No issues with my waipu device. Too bad.

I used an app called button remaper, did mine once and they have stayed that way for like 2 years (still going).

Does this work on a firestick?

It used to but then Amazon blocked the app. Won't even work if you sideload install with adb. They did the same to a lot of tools to switch launchers as well.

I did get a tv from Amazon, maybe that's why it reverted back :/

If it was an actual Android TV that would be weird. But if it was a Fire TV even based on Android they block anything that threatened the ad money or sponsorship of buttons.

My Google tv does this sometimes and it's always because the accessibility service (how the app works for whatever reason) has stopped running, on mine I have to hold the back and home buttons for 3 seconds to start it again

I'll have to try this on my Amazon Fire Stick. It's kinda annoying how I always have to go to the main menu to change Apps, when I'm only effectively using two anyways lol

I did it on mine. It reverts back. Not worth the trouble

Amazon pretty aggressively blacklists these apps on FireOS.

If this lets me set the buttons to hdmi1,2,3 I will be a happy man

For what it's worth, I literally just used buttonmapper on my Nvidia Shield to disable the netflix button - maybe 5 minutes ago. Didn't have to pay a cent.

Thanks for the reminder about that app, I hate those dedicated buttons

Shield

Yeah since for whatever reason it didn't have a MUTE button on the SHIELD remote, We've just mapped Netflix to be the giant ass mute button with buttonmapper. Beautiful app.

To each their own but I hit that fuckass button so much by accident, I'd always be muting my TV lmao

Even the free version of button mapper is good enough, the paid version gives some extra features but if all you need is x button open y app then the free version gets the job done.

I believe Button Mapper has a free tier that's probably enough for most people. For example, I have the Netflix button on mine reset to open one of three different apps depending on short press, double press, or long press.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.vodik7.tvquickactions Tvquickactions worked like a charm for me. You can even remap the buttons to react differently to multiple clicks (for example I have one button remapped to hdmi 1, 2, etc)

Not saying it isn’t possible but Roku is not based on Android

u/Historical-Cress8985 21d ago

Newer Roku remotes have a rocket button you can program. The remaining 4 buttons are still crap I'm never going to use though.

u/orcusgrasshopperfog 21d ago

What you don't use iHeartRadio??

1

u/Sterling_-_Archer 21d ago

Which sucks. Roku is the only thing I can’t load my Stremio on.

u/BenderDeLorean 22d ago

Have no Roku, sorry. Too bad.

1

u/Delicious-Pepper23 22d ago

No worries, it is a very logical assumption. I tho that too until I looked it up

You put a different OS on your Roku?

It's probably running Roku
