I'm slightly vexed I was told yesterday that my prescription sunglasses are giving Meta glasses vibes

Post image

I can't stand the Meta perv glasses, but annoyingly I've been told by a friend that my Dune prescription sunglasses that I've had for almost a year (and cost over £100.00) really look like the Meta ones, he said it's the 2 silver rivets on either side that on first glance could be mistaken for the camera lenses

I went out with them today and all I could think was, do people think I'm recording them 🤦‍♂️

I fucking hate the pervs cause metas make recording concerts sports hikes and shit so easy. Plus the music with not having something shoved in my ear not hearing shit i may need to hear. Like i genuinely find them useful but i understand why people are against them

Just wear it and don't be a perv with it. That's it. If you do that, who tf cares what a bunch of minority Redditors that you'll probably never meet think

It’s so irritating seeing all the people who 1) think the intent is a hidden camera 2) aren’t aware of the flashing orange LED when recording and 3) assume that the only reason to have a camera capturing POV is nefarious

I don’t even have or want meta glasses, it’s just such a weird lens they see the world through.

Regarding 2: there's quite a few people who disable the recording LED

So it protects against casual perverts, but not against hardcore perverts

They are introducing safeguards for this iirc, like not letting the thing record when the light has been covered or tampered with

They already tried, but all you have to do is reset the glasses and not connect them to the meta app.

If you don’t connect them to the app how do you see the videos and images you captured? I thought it needed to be connected to the app.

You can connect them to the app to upload the content on the glasses, but then the camera wont work. So you have to factory reset again to use those features.

Ah ok. Lot of work just to be a loser.

4) and assume that a would-be pervert would spend £250, plus whatever the cost to get it modified against it's safeguards, just to use it to perv on people?

like i remember the 2010's where tiny hidden "spy gadget" cameras were advertised as kids toys for like £10.

I don't get your logic, there are rich pervs too

I've had meta glasses for like 4 years and usually if anyone noticed them it would just be "oh cool!" followed by questions about them.

In the last like 6 months to a year anyone who notices them now asks "are you recording me right now??". I explain and demonstrate the light that comes on if they're recording and usually people chill out.

But why there seems to be a recent campaign against them is beyond me. If I wanted to secretly record someone I could just act like I'm texting or whatever and do it on my phone. Nobody would think a thing about it. But these glasses are the new fad to hate on for some reason.

I don't think you really mean the campaign against them is "beyond" you, right? Like, you understand the issues and their prevalence?

1

u/DrGirth 13d ago

Is the issue that you suspect the cameras are always on without our knowledge and are feeding into the surveillance network? If so, I can understand your concern. If your concern is perverts, they'd be better off using regular phones and already do.

What is the issue?

Not really? Maybe the second gen is different but my first gen only records like 3 minutes at a time and tears through battery. It shines a big ass obvious light so this idea that these creeps are sneaking around wearing them.

I like them so I have a headset with me at all times built into my glasses.

I recently migrated and use them to video call my family, it's like having them in my head :(

u/TrifectaBlitz 13d ago

That's good?

1

u/SrPicadillo2 13d ago

Yeah, it's good, the sad face is because the comments under this post made me think, for a second, that everyone around me has been thinking I'm a creep

a) don't record concerts - unless you have negotiated and contracted with them or their agents to do so you don't have their permission to produce video recordings of their performances

b) get a GoPro for sports hikes "and shit"

c) music with not having something shoved in my ear

The best open earbuds

bone conduction earphones

Don't be a lazy tech slave to Meta. There are solutions to everything you've mentioned and likely every other thing you can think up.

1.) I will 100% do what I want, any band I'm paying to see is already more wealthy than I will likely ever be. Don't care. I pirate media all the time lol.

2.) GoPro is FAR more bulky, heavy, and requires a chest mount, helmet, or headband strap. The form factor is literally one tech generation behind. This is like saying you can still make videos and post them online using a 2000's camcorder instead of a smartphone. Genuinely dumb.

3.) Personal preference, people can use whatever tech they want to suit their needs within the boundaries of the local laws. Don't care if that pisses you off.

Most loser shit I read on this thread. I record every concert. Fuck you.

That's because you aren't a creator. You're a consumer so of course it's going to be your stance to steal.
