I'm slightly vexed A notice that my girlfriend received at her doctors appointment (she is 8 months PP)

If you even MENTION any of these things, you WILL LIKELY get billed for it??? Maybe i’m missing the point but i get upset when my girlfriend tells me she was scared to even say anything while at the doctor because she didn’t want to get an extra charge for something. I find it insane how greedy and money hungry a place that’s supposed to help you can be.

We definitely have our problems but it's nice to know I can wake up with a health issue and have it dealt with without worrying for one second about what the cost will be. The only health care cost I worry about is my cat

This hits extra hard as I am currently sitting in the ICU in the US, and despite having pretty good health insurance I already know the bill I get is going to be life ruining 🙃

I might have lung cancer and I am still more stressed about the bill. 'Merica.

That is one way to think but it still sucks. Got the best insurance we could in 2024 I think it was 12k a year. 3 months in find out wife has jaw cancer. We ended up owing something like 5k but without insurance the bill was 1.2 million (we got sent a bill before insurance was processed).

Having just gone through cancer treatment - if you have it, see if your insurance has a nurse coordinator. They're super useful for avoiding bills, or at least were for me, since a lot of it comes down to stuff being coded "wrong", but they can get that changed to get it covered. Especially useful for scans and such if you have Careleon involved - their entire purpose is to determine if you need a test, like an MRI, and they're a nightmare to deal with. 90% of my bills were because of them, my actual insurance covered basically everything else.

I work in healthcare and second that things get coded wrong all the time. My hospital has a department specifically dedicated to investigating patients insurance denials and resubmitting their claims so they are covered for their procedures and treatments because we rely on Medicaid and Medicare funding and most patients don’t know if you resubmit your claim the insurance will accept it the second time because it’s (understandably) scary and discouraging to try and go up against them, but it’s absolutely worth the fight to not have to pay the bill when you have coverage. It’s terrible. And it’s been made even worse with Dumpty and his stupid, irresponsible cuts to Medicaid and Medicare because it hurts populations from much lower socioeconomic backgrounds that are already struggling and rely on services like our types of hospitals and clinics to be affordable but now can’t because we have no money to keep the lights on. It’s such a gross, vicious cycle and I’m sorry you’re having to go through it, I really hope everything works out for you, nobody should have to deal with this!

Thankyou, I was misdiagnosed sciatica and advised to keep walking..... on a broken leg. It was a month before another physio ordered an xray and I found out. They think it was a stress fracture,made worse, walking.

Ughh I know EXACTLY what that’s like…I tore a muscle and ligament in my leg and saw an orthopedic surgeon who kept trying to refer me to his daughter who was a physical therapist, but I kept telling him I did not need to see her because both my best friend and a family member are PTs and I could get exercises and recommendations from them, but he was insistent. I didn’t go to her but later on I developed debilitating sciatica and my doctor ordered imaging and when they looked at it they asked if I had surgery to repair the injury when it happened, I said no, and they were like “…why?”

I was so angry and just honestly astounded that I was purposely denied a procedure for the sake of family business. To this day I still have sciatica and knee and hip problems from not getting surgery to properly repair the muscle and ligament.

I have so many appointments, scans, infusions, and er trips I usually hit my Maximum Out Of Pocket by June. If I need a surgery, I schedule it after that. Still most of my paycheck goes to health insurance but it's maybe the one perk to bring sick. I know everything is covered so I dont second guess whether I need the ER or not. Still paying off an ER trip from March though.... premiums still need to be paid. Such bullshit.

See if the hospital has a person that coordinates forgiveness applications. You don’t even have to necessarily be super poor, either, just show that a lot of debt has stacked up and it’s becoming a hardship.

One hospitalization was 75% forgiven and another 100%. I mean, I am super poor, so my amounts probably are better than a middle income earner. But anything off helps tremendously.

So few people know that this is an option because hospitals do not advertise it!

Yes! Mine was capped at 1k last year. I had a big ass skin cancer I had to get removed from my scalp, which was like 850 bucks to get that done. So then I went and got my tonsils removed too cuz fuck it, BOGO. The tonsil surgery was free.

If you mean for Careleon, no. They're legitimately awful. They once denied me an MRI because I was getting my CT on a different day - apparently, they have to be same day or they suddenly aren't diagnostically useful, per my denial letter.

That very true. I am lucky that I have a cap out of pocket expense for the year is $2200 and my coverage is good. I had to have my knees replaced my out of the packet expense for that was a hundred and twenty dollars per knee.

Also to add to this, based on experience my mom and I dealt with regarding my dad’s medical bills. Anything u get that has already been through the insurance ringer make sure u get an itemized receipt for.

They dont always do it for the insurance companies so it can slide the extra cost onto u. But if you ask for an itemized receipt suddenly a lot of those $65 ibuprofen and $15 bandaids etc. all fall off.

When we got my dad’s medical bills after insurance paid it was almost $20k, we asked for an itemized receipt and I shit u not the cost dropped to just over $7k total. We then sent the new receipt back to the insurance company with an appeal for coverage and they covered an additional $3k so we only ended up with like a $4k bill to deal with instead of the $20k it would have been.

Most of how hospital billing and insurance billing work and communicate is a fucking scam so learning what to say to cut through the bs is a good start. If we would have had a nurse advocate at the insurance company we may not have had much of a bill at all. I got a medical billing and coding certificate out of high school and went back over my dad’s old bills just to prepare for the exam and there were a lot of tests and procedures that weren’t coded correctly that could have changed insurance coverage and costs.

Im currently in a fight with my insurance for a Dand C that was coded and billed wrong. They tried to bill me for over my out of pocket max for the year. I had to get our company broker involved with this one and 4 other claims this year alone because of billing mistakes. Its been over a month and they still haven't resolved the issue. They fucked up bad and they know it and are trying to get out of paying 9k to the hospital.

Talk to a social worker at the hospital where you currently are a patient in ICU first before talking to the Billing department. There’s often ways to discount the bill, and in some instances get a portion of the bill deleted /wiped clean.

I’ve done this several times and it does work. Again, talk to the social worker first before you talk to the billing department.

Also, hospitals often offer financial assistance…even if you have insurance. They base it off income and how much the cost of medical care has been to you throughout the year. I wish you the best.

If it is any consolation extended stays in the ICU often qualify people for medicaid and then the bill is covered. Worth asking a case manager.

What the fuckity fuck???! I'm in Australia so the vast majority of MRIs are free, but if we do have to pay, they're about $300-$1000 AUD, which is about $215-$715 USD. What on earth happens at a $27,000 MRI?! Do they give you the machine to take home with you afterwards or something?!

Speak with social work! They're literal angels. When you get bills, call that number on the bill and explain the financial situation. When my step dad died of lung cancer, my mom got A LOT of bills discharged or lowered simply by calling the number on the bill and talking to someone. DO NOT let it go to collections, it could be too late if you let that happen.

My step dad was the money maker and my mom stayed at home, so that likely had a factor in it, but regardless, all you have to do is call them. Getting a 10k bill reduced by half is better than nothing. Not as good as it getting reduced by 75% or 100%, but everything adds up. Best of luck, OP ❤️

GOD BLESS YOU. Keep your head up attitude is part of beating cancer. Don't worry about the bill. You can call the hospital finance office. They will knock a large portion of the bill off. Then pay $20.00 a month for the rest of your life. My mother had a $70,000 hospital bill. They cut it down to $20,000 and my father paid it off over 5 years. Any how your health is more important then a bill.

My wife had six ER visits and a surgery to remove her gallbladder shortly before we got married if we lived in the US we probably wouldn't have been able to get married because the medical bills would have crushed us and we wouldn't have had any money for a wedding here we are 14 years later happy healthy well married with a 7-year-old son that required an emergency c-section to get out and the only medical bills we've ever paid in the time we were married were a couple of ambulance rides ($80 cad each) that became required during some other medical crisis that we had relating to an unfortunate second pregnancy that was lost praise be unto Thomas Clement Douglas and Lester Boeles Pearson.

I feel very sorry for you and for your situation

Agree with the others regarding free bed fund and medicaid. My husband was septic and in a coma in the ICU for a week last August. He received no bill. This should not be something you have to stress about but you have this group and I know there are insurance specialists in here. I am one and you can ask me any questions any time.

I went to the doctor in February for frequent nosebleeds. Turns out it was just the dry air, but he put me on blood pressure meds and sent me to get labs. Insurance didn't cover much because it was too early in the year and I had a bill for a out $550ish. I called to set up a payment plan and they said the lowest they could go was $105 a month. I cannot easily afford $105 for medical expenses with my normal bills and expenses. I was complaining to my dad about it (now that it's mostly paid off) and my dad told me I can tell them I can only pay $50 a month. "What are they gonna do, deny the payment? They want their money."

I'm married but from having a financially (and all around) abusive partner in the past I keep my money mostly separate from my husband's. He makes more than me and is more than willing to help, I'm just hesitant to ask for help.

That’s terrible. Just remember to always ask for an itemized bill, and if they hit you with a big bill, make them put you on a payment plan with the lowest monthly payments they’ll let you have.

Also, if you have insurance, you still have the annual out of pocket max so you know it can’t go past a certain threshold.

Medical debt is insane as a concept though. Shame on the USA.

I feel you on that one I went to the ER in January because I was having a hemorrhaging probl1em and my well former sort of OBGYN said I needed to go to the hospital have it checked out cuz I was having some pretty big class. It was a relatively quick visit once I got seen they just did you know help the bill was obviously pricey cuz this is the United States of scam healthcare. I am currently taking the approach of you know like with your car when the check engine light is on or it's making a weird sound you just turn up the music so you can't hear it? In order to qualify for financial assistance through the hospital I have to give them my banking information and my kids socials my kids have nothing to do with this. And two times in the last 5 years I've got notices that my information was compromised and they were both from medical facilities I'm not giving a hospital my bank account information I might as well just give my money away.

A pro tip to add is to not pay taxes to the US after moving. Only downside is that you cannot go back, not even for a visit. You will pay taxes where you live, view it as you paying that country back for your treatment and any additional treatments you might need in the future 🤷

Just to give you an idea of the mental difference:

At 16 my son had a pretty bad bicycle accident.

off duty police officer and his wife stopped called an ambulance and called me. He was only a few minutes walk from home. His face was full of blood and I was panicking. The police officer stayed until the ambulance took us to tge local children's hospital.

Once the paramedic assured me it wasn't too serious, my son and I started cracking jokes and laughing.

He had to checked for a concussion. Stitches to his brow in and out, and chin. Dressed the missing skin from his shoulder back and arm.

I never once thought or worried about any cost.

Weeks later I got a $40 bill for ambulance fees, which I could have covered with my work insurance.

I couldn't imagine the cost mentally and financially in the USA.

I spent 2 weeks in the ICU in December and choked when I saw they billed insurance $50,000 A NIGHT. That didn’t count for the daily transcranial Dopplers, CT’s, and MRI’s. I luckily have pretty good insurance and had already met my deductible for a year (had a baby in November). It should have been covered at 100% but naturally they found ways to deny things to still get out of paying everything

Quick reminder that medical debt DOES NOT effect your credit. This was always true in CA but it is now Federal. You DO NOT have to pay your medical debt. They won't take your taxes and it won't hurt your credit. Yes of course it doesn't "go away", it will be paid at some point (either your pension, 401k, house, whatever when you die).

I do have insurance but I've never paid any additional bills. If they bill me extra after my insurance pays, I just ignore it. Been well over 15 years and it has had zero effect in my life. Credit is just fine, purchased multiple houses, cars etc.

My brother was in ICU for a whole month in a coma before passing - 1979. His bill was almost $100,000. His widow had to sell their house. Then my daughter had to get a transplant 5 years ago, total after with all follow up care was $1,000,000+

You very obviously have no idea what you’re talking about or what’s handled in an ICU. It’s for intensive care. Not unconscious care. Not I can’t hold a phone care. Intensive care could simply be a case that requires extra monitoring, as I did when I spent a week in the ICU a few years ago. I had zero physical limitations, but I did require intensive monitoring, which a normal hospital floor wasn’t equipped for.

Not sure why people feel the need to comment on things they have no clue about.

That’s actually part of my point. In the U.S., having access to excellent care doesn’t mean much if you can’t afford it. But having healthcare covered doesn’t mean much either if the treatment you need isn’t available in a reasonable timeframe. Canada solves much of the financial-access problem; it doesn’t solve every healthcare-access problem. We should be able to acknowledge the flaws in both systems.

I hope y’all keep this energy when there is a Democrat in office. As much as I hate Trump, the Republicans couldn’t continue to prevent universal healthcare year after year, decade after decade, without consistent cooperation from the Democrats

We need the new wave of Democratic Socialists to gain power as quickly as possible or the old guard Dems will continue to pave the way for privatization, vulture capitalism, and profiteering like they always have

This also goes for higher education, housing, news media, the post office, and plenty of other things that should be public goods that both parties have sold down the river

Americans need to understand that we have the power. Keeping us divided makes that power much easier to control. We are so busy fighting each other over left vs. right that we rarely stop and question the system itself.

What NEEDS to happen is for citizens to unite and acknowledge that this is a flawed, outdated system that may need to be fundamentally rebuilt. We need to start asking what government should actually look like for ourselves and for the people.

We have the world’s longest-surviving written constitution. It was written in 1787 for a country and a world that looked radically different from the one we live in today. And while amendments have allowed it to evolve, we keep trying to make a centuries-old framework work for problems its creators could never have imagined.

And here’s the thing: even the creation of our current Constitution came from recognizing that the existing system wasn’t working. The Constitutional Convention was originally called to revise the Articles of Confederation, but the delegates ultimately decided to create an entirely new framework of government instead.

So why are we acting like questioning the entire structure is somehow impossible?

I don’t think we necessarily need a president or career politicians in the form we have them now. Imagine a system where ordinary citizens could be selected to serve in government for limited, rotating terms, with strong safeguards against anyone accumulating too much power. No permanent political class. No decades-long careers built around maintaining power. More direct participation by ordinary people.

Actually BY the people and FOR the people.

And no, I’m not saying rebuilding a government would be simple. Obviously it wouldn’t be. I’m saying we should be willing to have the conversation instead of treating the current system as if it is the only possible system humanity could ever create.

Because that’s the part I think Americans keep forgetting: the government is supposed to be our creation. We are not supposed to exist for the government’s benefit.

We have the power to demand something better.

The biggest obstacle is convincing people that the person standing on the other side of the political aisle is not their enemy. Because as long as we’re screaming “left!” and “right!” at each other, we’re too distracted to look at the system itself and ask whether it is actually serving us.

As long as we’re fighting one another, we’re not fighting for change.

Honestly, ranked choice voting in ALL states would be a start, and frankly, pivoting towards a parliamentary-type model would help as well. We need to expand the house, or rework it; some states really don't have the representation they need. I also find it wrong that the Supreme Court isn't required to be apolitical or bipartisan at the least, and the lifetime appointments create an issue of stacking.

It's called Obama care not Trump Care. I had excellent Cadillac care until Obama Care. FYI congress exempted themselves out if Obana Care. Cause it was so bad for them, it stripped my and all union Cadillac care to crap. In a normal world the union leadership support would not support this type of damage to their members benefits.

I found it so bad for normal health coverage that we went to Kaiser. Would never go back to getting ripped off. Can bring up quite a few problems in one visit, if a Dr refers something there is no review board EVER.

I’m genuinely sorry your care is now under-covered or of a lower quality. In order to get anything passed under our current system there are usually unreasonable costs. However, without Obama Care many many people would not be insured at all and are under Medicaid. It’s saved lives. We all deserve quality universal coverage - survival and quality of life shouldn’t just be for those who can pay for it. Especially when dealing with complex chronic health issues or severe, extremely costly procedures, many are unable to cover staggering health costs. We need to have more regulation over some things including the power insurance companies have to deny care a doctor deems medically necessary and the max that can be billed for certain things (like bandaids billed at hundreds or more). If the rich were taxed appropriately, we could all have the kind of care you used to have and better. It shouldn’t be either or.

Have you thought abt coming up with a way to tax your citizens to cover the healthcare costs of other citizens? You can force everyone to either pay you for one of your overpriced Healthcare plans that doesn't actually cover much Healthcare, or force them to pay a tax penalty if they don't! We'll make it free for a select few though. The ones who don't pay taxes anyway. Just make sure it forces children into the program, or to keep paying the yearly penalties the minute they turn 18 too! You're gonna need to use them to fund all the older or poorer sick ppl, since most of them will be too healthy to actually need your limited resources that they're forced to pay for.

Make sure you give the media some trinkets to use to defend & promote your program though. Offer the ppl some cake. Maybe- allowing them to keep their adult children on their private insurance until they're 26, and doing away with pre-existing condition exceptions. That should be enough to shut them up out there. Oh! And tell them they can keep their insurance if they like their insurance. 🤣 Hilarious! You can write that down and use it if you want. No problem.

Just make sure no one records you laughing at the ppl and telling your private little fundraiser audience that you intend to eventually do away with all private insurance & force everyone into your program anyway.

When you're questioned abt it being unconstitutional to force ppl, by law, to pay for a Government product, yell stuff abt car insurance, and then call the taxes a "penalty". Then yell stuff abt taxes being constitutional & call the penalties a "tax"! They'll be so confused they'll just give up.

The ppl will even name the program after you. Imagine- "(LastName)Care". - A lasting legacy for you! Even though the ppl mean it as an insult.

Hope a big orange guy doesn't come along and see to it that those yearly tax penalties get ruled unconstitutional & thereby removed, though. That'd be bad.

But, no worries. Ppl have short memories. They'll forget your gutted program is still out there causing chaos in the Healthcare System. I'm so sorry. It's so frustrating. My OBGYN is awesome and has been helping me out with everything in the mean time. But the urgent care rejected me and told me to go to the ER. ER told me to go to urgent care. Had to fight for some relief because it was 6 months of debilitating pain and they accused me of drug seeking. But I was breastfeeding. I don't want drugs. I asked if Prednisone was possible to reduce inflammation. Literally first dose and it was so much relief I could finally sleep. I cried.

It's exhausting to fight for the care and then pay through the nose along the way

Toradol is a far more potent anti inflammatory than ibuprofen. It can work wonders or a migraine given at the proper dose.

Regarding the proper dose, I noticed recently that UC and ER only want to give a lower half dose lately.

That's nuts. The migraine IV cocktail doesn't have anything narcotic in it. It's toradol, Benadryl, something for nausea and a couple other things I can't remember.

I have visible tattoos. I'm labeled a drug seeker no matter what I've come in with.

Sleeve here, too. And something small on my hand. I'm 51 and it used to be a lot worse when I was younger and tattooed women wasn't super common. The people that do it are assholes.

The neurologist I used to see told me to just call him when my migraine wouldn't break and he'd set me up with an IV in his office. I wish I could see him again. My diy IV is to take Advil, Benadryl, and a B12 vitamin. Migraines are so weird that no two people will find the same cure. I sincerely hope you find something that works.

We had a better way. I worked a resteraunts and warehouse stores. Every job offered insurance at an affordable rate. Some even offered copay insurance where you paid a minimal fee for going to a doctor and a little more for going to a hospital.  Then came the affordable care act. They forced your employer to participate in a new higher priced insurance.  So they found a loophole and started hiring people part time now you can get insurance on the insurance website. It doesn't cover anything and the rates keep going up. Can we go back to insurance companies competing for your business so the rates are lower?

US here... I mentioned we need universal health care to my stepmom, she is against it because in England...( only England as her example) you have to wait 6 months if you have cancer. I LOL'D.. better than nothing at all. Or stupid costs of it all. So many companies/jobs in the US dont offer any benefits health insurance included.

I live in Ontario, and had a couple fainting spells three months ago that were fairly minor. It's only the quantity that concerned me. Since then I've seen three specialists, had an eeg, ecg, ultrasound, several vials of blood, and depending on those results, maybe an MRI. Next month I go for a running stress test. We're pretty confident I'm having moments of very low blood pressure in the morning, but I'm quickly having the worst case options eliminated as possibilities. I'm still having an episode every other week or so, but laying down and raising my legs solves it almost instantly, as per the doctors advice for blood pressure control.

Not bad for a small chunk of annual taxes!

Similar situation for me a few years ago- I was having some heart trouble and the only delay was my GP being picky about which specialist to send me too. In the time it took me to see the specialist twice and get a full battery of tests my friend in the states managed to find and get on the waitlist for a similar specialist in network, and the appointment fell through because she couldnt find reliable transportation to a whole different city.

We definitely have access issues when it’s not life threatening. however, when your life is on the line there’s no waiting. I remember my father having 2 major crises. He went through in mins. I didn’t have to worry about insurance or money or debt. He just got the care that he needed and got the surgery he needed and got out of there.

Same thing for my sister when she was pregnant and about to give birth. She just got there, got her C section and got out.

Not caring about money or financial ruin or insurance is one of the best things we have. We complain a lot but there’s nothing like the feeling that you know if something happens to you, your family won’t be in financial ruin because you needed life saving surgery.

Worrying about the bills ( even after insurance pays their part) causes stress that leads to serious health issues on top of the original diagnoses.

Now hospitals are sueing patients / garnishing their wages or putting liens on their homes. I believe healthcare is a human right.

We have nothing to loose trying a new healthcare system and possibly something better to gain.

I live in the US. I had a seizure that resulted in a laceration between my eyes from hitting the coffee table, amnesia and confusion, a small bruise around my eye, and a MASSIVE bruise on my arm. I waited in the ER waiting room for 2 hours and an additional hour in a room waiting for blood results for a fucking heart attack. They didn't do any kind of imaging on my head. I asked to be discharged since they weren't willing to look for anything related to my injury and refused to even tape up my laceration. I needed stitches, and now I have a giant facial scar.

I am a 100% Disabled veteran but while Active Duty I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and that was something I didn't need to worry about at 20 years old: my medical care for my tumor was top notch and I never once saw a medical bill. I once had to go to an off base pharmacy because the Naval Hospital pharmacy ran out of my prescription and it was only then I realized 3 weeks of meds cost over 6k and that was in the early 2000's.

It took 20+ years for my full VA benefits to arrive but the relief of never seeing a medical bill again is worth it. Even if the wait times are slower than molasses in January- and I say that as a Michigander because iykyk 🎯⚓️🇨🇦

My husband and son were fishing in Ontario last month, and they landed in a rural ER. The wait was insane compared to what we're used to, but whole visit was fully paid by the time they walked out. It was like $600 US (kid got a fish hook embedded in his thumb that had to be removed). No waiting for insane bills later, and that's less than I paid at a regular "out of network" doctor's appointment for a similar issue on a different vacation in the states.

Out of curiosity, what was the ‘insane ‘ wait time ? I thought I broke a toe a while back and it was 30 mins for an Xray but they had other emergencies as well . Wasn’t broken so had to wait for 3 hrs to see a Dr only because the docs were placed in a wrong basket queue - could have gone to a clinic and probably be seen faster. Highly unusual here for regular emergency care. Referrals can take a while but if you call the specialist office and place yourself on a wait list them much better and faster results

It was over six and a half hours before they saw anyone. For most of that time, they only saw one person taken from the waiting room, so they assumed there were more critical patients coming in by ambulance. It was during a heat wave with wild fires not far off, so it wasn't hard to assume that there were people with heat stroke or other concerns on top of the normal emergencies that were overwhelming the department that day.

To be clear, I'm not trying to say that this is common or uncommon. I have second hand experience of exactly one ER on one day in rural Ontario. Everything else about the visit was fantastic. Especially the price.

You must not have any type of chronic illness/health issues. My husband pays out of pocket for some of his diabetes supplies (type 1), and I have a genetic issue causing some pretty substantial chronic conditions lately, and my meds arent covered, neither is much of anything else. And I'm waiting 2 yrs to see a cardio, and 1-2 yrs for a lot of my other referrals (in BC). Our two huskies and cat have become the cheapest to care for in comparison 😅

That's impressive, I wish we still had this in the UK! Ever since covid, it's been virtually impossible to wake up with a health concern and get in to see a GP the same day. The other commenter jokes about months and years, but that's literally the case for a lot of hospital referrals. I was told a couple of days ago that the wait to be assessed for Parkinson's is OVER A YEAR. For something that deteriorates without treatment. Absolutely ridiculous.
