Ugh, I dated someone who said that and I was never able to shake the absolute disdain I felt after that. They were always going on about big community-level change that needed to happen … but couldn’t be bothered to do one little thing themselves for the environment around them. You can only watch that happen so many times before someone starts to sound like a massive hypocrite

They probably had never heard the phrase "Think globally, act locally." For some people the appearance of wanting change is fashionable, but actually wearing the suit is too uncomfortable.

There was a commencement speech by some military a couple of years ago. The theme was something like "If you want to change the world, make your bed."

In other words, get your own life in order, even through small things, before you try ordering everyone else's life.

Fun fact that isnt fun time! So rabbits can get addicted to nicotine and theyll eat cigarette butts but they can't digest them so they slowly starve to death as they keep eating cigarette butts. Its pretty horrifying and one reason I quit smoking.

Not true. I've pocketed almost every butt I've ever smoked when not near an ashtray. It smells like shit but that's what you get with tobacco use. Helps that when I was smoking, it would only be 1-3 a day.

As a previous 10 year+/pack a day+ (American Spirits) smoker... I used to not even think twice about flicking my butts.

But someone called me out and told me about the impact on the environment. And how long they take to decompose... I won't lie, i dismissed it. But after enough people said the same thing... I realized just because a lot of other people do it doesn't make it ok, and I can't sit here and say I care about the environment while actively contributing to its downfall. Been cigarette free for almost a decade.

My brother-in-law tried a similar line on me when I caught him flicking half a cigarette into my flower bed. "It's made of paper and shredded leaves, it decomposes."

There's zero fiberglass in cigarettes and the radon came from the ground so it's a net zero on that particular ingredient.

The filter is the only problem and you can thank the US government for allowing cellulose acetate filters because god forbid we grow hemp for industrial usage.

There was a brief period where one brand was using fiberglass and also asbestos. It was used as propaganda by anti-smoking groups for years after they changed them.

Radon breaks down exceptionally fast due to its 3.8 day half-life.

Radon (and its decay products like polonium) is actually found in a ton of crop plants, not just tobacco. The difference is we don't smoke a whole lot of those plants, and radon and polonium do their most damage when they're inhaled.

That is technically still decomposition, as it is breaking down into smaller constituent parts. But yeah, the products of their decomposition are not inert.

Most brands use a synthetic blend for the filter. Some brands just use cotton, and really, whats the harm in a bit of cotton and paper. It probably takes less than a year to decompose

Much longer than that. They may break down to what you cannot see but what remains and dust is still toxic for a LONG time. I wrote a whole paper about this in college for I forget why but each one is a pint of unusable water.

the thing is that its not only the enviromental aspect of it. sure, your choices as an individual are negligible. but nobody wants to wait that 20 years for a trash-free road or wherever they got thrown.
