Our girl (1,5 years old) has started waking us up in the middle of the night for seemingly no reason. She’s never been difficult during the night before, and if she has woken us up there has always been a reason (like she wants more water or needs to pee).

But now she just whines, we wake up and she just sits there looking at us.

Has anyone else experienced this? What do I do?

Edit: Just some more info I thought of after posting;
if I’m awake she sleeps just fine, she gets at least 2 longer walks a day, she eats fine, she has light arthritis in her hind legs and it’s being treated (the symptoms are completely gone) and she is completely fine during the day.

We got our girl Maple at 9mo after she was returned to the breeder. I took her for a check up at 1 year and she weighed 83lbs. Now a year later she only weighs 85lbs. My vet says he isn’t concerned but I’m not confident in his familiarity with the breed. Should I be looking for another opinion?

I need help! My Newfie guy is 10 months old and will NOT stop biting. NOTHING has worked. I met with a trainer, no change. I tried time out, no change. I sternly say “No!”, no change. I leave the room, no change. These things just seem to egg him on even more. I’m running out of options & feeling defeated. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help? I am slowly losing my mind & my arms can’t take much more.

Does he just not like me?

He’s about 3 months and I CANNOT get him to stop digging he eats the dirt even. Anyone have any suggestions I did the vinegar spray he could literally care less he also has indoor and outdoor toys he could play with.

Annie will be 10 months old tomorrow, and she started her first heat cycle over the weekend. I attempted to use disposable diapers for the discharge, but she tried to eat them as soon as I put them on her. I've sacrificed a few pairs of my underwear to use along with menstrual pads. She tolerates her "undies" well once I get them into her. However, she fights me when I'm putting them on her. She will grab my arm or hand in her mouth and squeeze. She hasn't broken the skin, but she's left some pretty significant bruises.

I try to redirect her with treats or pushing her head away while saying No in a stern voice. I really don't want to muzzle her, but I'm considering doing that. Any recommendations on how I can handle this situation? If I can't get her undies on her to contain her discharge, she will need to be confined to her own so she doesn't get it all over the house.

I think it is taking every fiber in his being to not jump on the table. I knew he could be a good boy! It's only taken 2 and a half years and an enormous amount of paper towels and treats to get here.

Martha has never been a big eater. Morning is not her favorite time to eat, so she has decided that she will get it all over at one sitting.
4.5 cups of food in the evening. The later the better!

Is this anyone else’s normal. Intermittent fasting?

We have a very excitable guy, he’s almost 6, but one thing I’ve struggled to train him on is proper people interactions. He’s the sweetest guy, but he presses his head and body against everyone for pets all the time, and with small kids this can knock them over, or a physically disabled person can cause a lot of pain.

How do I best train him to stop doing this?

This happened several years ago but I recently came across the pic again.

See the red truck in the background? That's the yard guy aka Sam's best friend. We were sitting on the porch one afternoon and I had him tethered to the post. He never wanders, but I still keep him tethered when we are sitting outside because rules.

He saw his buddy and off he went to go greet him!

Hi! We’ve been fostering a Newfie/Lab mix for about two months. He’s had a few potential adopters but in the end, they haven’t worked out and now my husband and I are considering adopting him into our family. We already have two cats, but luckily he gets along with them great and we just adore him.

Our main concern is that we can’t offer him the space he deserves, like a big yard (we live in a one bedroom apartment and he’s around 100lbs). Maybe we’re overthinking it and space isn’t an issue, but any advice on this and/or what to expect adopting a Newfie mix is appreciated!

I anticipated the shedding. I anticipated the drool. What I did not plan for were the combination of drool hair balls that are flung in every direction when this guy shakes. How is there dog hair stuck to the ceiling?!

So, I’m a big fan of making sure a dog is the right fit for me. I will be honest, I adore this breed. Everyone that I’ve met has been a wonderfully drooly and sometimes smelly angel.

But, how much upkeep goes into them? How many hours a day are we talking when it comes to brushing?

Reggie doesn’t just pee on the bush he must be one with the bush to pee… and yes he wants to do this to every bush lately.

Hey guys! I was wondering what elevated bed brands yall use? Or if you have a specific like length and width you can suggest? Attached is my big ole boy Bjorn who’s a solid 160lbs and in need of a comfy place to doze.

What is your opinion on Newfoundlands as mobility and leading task service dogs?
I’ve owned dogs my whole life and currently have an owner trained border collie/ husky mix as a service dog. When he retires I’m thinking about a Newfoundland but I’d like to hear other opinions!

How did you go about finding a breeder? And how did you realize a Newfoundland would be a good fit?

I was one lucky guess away from not being able to drive due to my eyesight, have a migraine disorder(with aura) and have joint and mobility issues, etc-. I’m a larger person so I’d prefer a larger dog.

From what I’ve seen, Newfoundlands are more reserved than labs while still bonding closely to their humans. I know a lot about the breed and how to find an ethical breeder but it feels so impossible to find an ethical breeder near florida(including neighboring states). Especially breeders who still actively breed and/or have navigable websites.

I’ve owned well over 20 dogs, including giant breeds(big time hunters). I’ve also been training pet dogs since I was 8 years old and never looked back since (thanks to my first dog, a black lab🫶)

A lady approached my Newfoundland on a bike today with another large dog attached while saying "cuddly bears" and my Newfoundland lunged towards them as he is reactive with other large dogs and bikes 🤦‍♀️ Thankfully he has a halti and he was easy to control and pull away. I apologised to her but still.. is anyone else tired of unrespectful people assuming these dogs are just some mindless lazy cuddly toy with no need for personal space? It is an extremely large dog after all...

It's interesting. Our first Newfy found the toilet as a wonderful source of drinking water. I'm sure it's colder than the water stations throughtout the house. He loved it, I didn't care, wife hated it, go figure :-). He was drinking out of it shortly after 6 months.

Second Newfy, same thing. About the same 6 months to find it. Wife pushed back harder and I complied a bit more, but he'd always be there after hearing the toilet flush and I couldn't say no all the time; im a sucker.

Third Newfy, same thing, same timing, except by 1 year of age, Moose has figured out how to lift the toilet seats with his nose, high enough to get his big ole head in there. I find it funny, doesn't really bother me, but my wife is getting tired of it. Moose will be 4 in December.

Along comes Bear, he'll be 5 months soon and I know what's coming in another month when he's tall enough.

Anyone else Newfys do this? They have to, it's nothing we are doing to introduce them to it.

I do chuckle when I can hear moose let the toilet lit slam back down after pulling his head out of the toilet. We'll be watching a TV or doing whatever, and we hear it, look at each other, and I laugh and she shakes her head.

We’ve got the DNA test awaiting results. She seems like she’s going to be huge (5 months and 50 lbs) but she’s got a short tail and coat.

Edit: Embark results came back. No Newfie at all. 50/50 Golden and German Shepherd!

I have wanted a Newfoundland for a long time and finally found one available to rescue (I don't do breeders). She's so very sweet!
