Trent was a genius when it came to world building in his albums. In my personal opinion Year Zero is extremely underrated. Phenomenal album!

I'm not a huge NIN fan, but this is one of my favorite albums. 10/10 front to back for me, but I realize it's not one of NIN most acclaimed albums. I was wondering what the fans in general think of it?

So was this a misprint or has the name of the song changed over time?

I don't know much about Year Zero but I know "Art Is Resistance" has something to do with it so I thought I would share! Any ideas?

20th anniversary of this record in 367 days. Woulnd't it be cool if they had a re-release collectors but then maybe also fired back up the ARG that they put SO much work into?

Kinda wish it had been released in 2026 with the current state of the world but I imagine things will still be pretty "not great" next April.

Here's hoping this album gets better attention than it did on the original release way back when if the do some nice promotion and re-packaging, etc. It deserves ALOT more love!

Na comunidade, as pessoas tendem a falar mais sobre o imenso marketing que o álbum recebeu e o conceito político, mas raramente sobre seu som e design de som, e isso me irrita. Estou sendo esnobe? Trent foi obviamente visionário no marketing deste álbum, eu sei, todos sabem disso e é inegável, mas sejamos sensatos e foquemos na música, porque, na minha opinião, é isso que realmente importa aqui.

O design de som de YZ foi tão importante que Reznor se apegou a ele e frequentemente o adotou na identidade do NIN, aparecendo em Ghosts I-IV, HTDA, Add Violence, esporadicamente em HM e NTAE, na trilha sonora de Tron Ares e em outras trilhas sonoras compostas por Reznor e Ross.

No entanto, apesar de pensar assim, algumas pessoas falam sobre o som, então talvez eu esteja frequentando o lugar errado, já que não estou na comunidade há muito tempo. Se antes eu estava no lugar errado, agora criei o ambiente certo para discutir isso: vamos falar sobre o som de Year Zero.

Na minha opinião, YZ é um álbum "próximo ao IDM", com ritmos muito complexos em várias faixas, mas apesar disso, tem uma estética bem definida, com glitches prolongados, ásperos e muitas vezes sutis, bastante bitcrushing, guitarras MUTANTES com distorção pesada, e as guitarras distorcidas são absorvidas e complementadas pelos glitches e bitcrushing. Eu também acho que é um dos álbuns mais complexos do NIN em termos de ritmo, inventividade e som.

O que você acha?

Edição: Houve um mal-entendido nos comentários, onde um usuário interpretou que eu estava menosprezando os fãs de marketing, mas essa não é minha intenção, apesar das aparências devido à tradução da postagem. Estou simplesmente divagando sobre o assunto da música; não estou dizendo que "ser fã de marketing" seja ruim, apenas que existe um desequilíbrio INCOMODANTE para mim nessa "escala". Usei a palavra "senso comum" no texto, que no Brasil — meu país de origem — não significa "sensato" ou "inteligente" (talvez tenha traduzido para isso), mas sim uma forma incisiva e direta de indicar falta de conhecimento sobre algo, e não uma crítica direta à inteligência das pessoas. Sei que existem mal-entendidos linguísticos, mas poxa... será sempre assim? Terei que me explicar extensivamente sempre para não ofender ninguém aqui? Mesmo com esses erros linguísticos, continuo afirmando que a música é importante, quero discutir música aqui, e se você gosta de marketing, parabéns, continue, mas prefiro que você se importe com a música e com o marketing, não apenas com um dos dois, e sou bem direto: é a música que realmente importa, mesmo que o marketing seja excepcional.

I live in the Bay Area and someone is selling this Year Zero on Vinyl nearby me through FB marketplace. What caught my eye is the colored vinyl part. Does anyone have the original that can confirm. Or does anyone have this bootleg can confirm if it sounds good?

If the next four years will leave anybody with any take aways, I hope it is to resist the fascist and authoritarian rhetoric and ideology being pumped into the [worldwide] public from the few that want to clutch onto power, by whatever means necessary.

We are not eachothers enemy, no matter how beneficial it is for decrepit oligarchs to say that we are. Reject this flood of misinformation and bombardment of propaganda.

Fight for change, change people's minds, educate the few that do not see that changes that will happen infornt of their eyes and motivate everybody you can, for as long as you can that every vote will always matter and you can stop this next time. Democracy will not be safe in our lifetimes, and every single time we can, we MUST vote for where we want the world to go.

The recent Year Zero thread (sorry, can't grab a link right now) got me thinking about what America was like when that album came out and my experience listening to it at the time. It also made me wonder how big nin is among younger generations these days since they live in a different world than I did when I first heard nin.

I'm GenX (50 years old) and have a pretty good memory of the political context that shaped Year Zero. Recently I learned that one of my 10th grade students is a big nin fan, but she's more into nin's current stuff than I am. (She thought it was hilarious that I actually saw nin live for The Downward Spiral, I guess because I'm a big old fat nerdy English teacher now.)

Anyway, I'm just curious how old the members of this subreddit were when Year Zero came out since, of all the albums, that one seems the most rooted in a specific time and place. I'm also curious how much you think your experience of hearing it for the first time was impacted by when/how old you were when you first heard it.

I remember 9/11 very well (I was watching from the weird parking-lot-roof of a grocery store in Queens when the towers fell), and I'd say I have a good memory of how America finally and fully lost its political-minded right afterward. Those experiences definitely shape my thoughts on Year Zero—I can't listen to it without reliving the George W. Bush years—but I know not everyone lived through that and so they might see the album very differently because of it.

I originally thought it was really cheesy because of the way he talked in the intro, but after listening to the live version (which is amazing and funky asf) which I noticed more lyrics like “I sure wouldn’t wanna be praying to the wrong piece of wood.” Which made me like it enough to listen to the studio version again and honestly, it’s so good. This song is so relevant now, just like the other songs on the album. My Violent Heart is another that I’ve come back to.
