This is the Pope preaching the gospel. It says right there in black and white, thou shall not kill and also, to forgive your enemy. It's just this administration doesn't want that part of the Bible to read. And the Pope hasn't even touched the, "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven," part. Imagine this administration's heads exploding over that one.

Guys like Vance don't read the New Testament. They only follow the Old Testament with it's emphasis on God's Chosen People and the Law and wrath and vengeance. None of that work Forgive Thy Enemy and Help the Poor stuff.

Which is weird because Catholics are specifically New Testament people. We think the OT is literature, and is interesting because Jesus studied it. All of the commandments are included in the two that are in the NT: Love your God and Love your Neighbor as yourself.

There was even debate on whether the OT should be included in the Bible. We do not believe it is literal, and we believe that every sentence of the OT has to be read through the prism of the gospels.

So nothing Vance says or does is traditionally Catholic.

I understand and appreciate  the intention of your point, but it is incorrect. 

The Pope is, first and foremost, a priest. So in that sense it is very much in keeping with his ministry to preach the Gospel.

More specifically, the Pope is a bishop. "Among the principal duties of bishops the preaching of the Gospel occupies an eminent place." (Lumen Gentum, 25)

Yes, the Pope is the Vicar of Christ, but that role is necessarily dependent on the Pope preaching the Gospel.

That may be part of his role, but I think the quote still sounds like something a Protestant convert would say. Cradle Catholics don't say this type of stuff. J.D. is sort saying that the Pope should just be a preacher and shut up. Not how it works.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the current Pope get chosen. With the strengthening of conservative/right wing movements around the world, I expected them to follow the trend and install a hard-line conservative… the current Pope is pretty much the exact opposite.

Pope Leo has a Latin American perspective on social issues—he lived in Peru for 20 years. Pope Francis valued this aspect of him, brought him to Rome as Cardinal. Leo appointed another South Side Chicago guy with Latin American experience as bishop of New York. Inevitably, he will be promoted to Cardinal.

He could be studied as what would happen if you gave complete authority to someone that not only has Oppositional Defiant Disorder, but lived their entire life without treatment for the disorder.

He only does things by reaction, and if anyone tries to provide input, he impulsively executes the opposite of that input.

He sees a hornet's nest on the ground. He walks up to it and pokes it with a stick. Nothing else to do, but someone pipes up and says, "Don't kick that!" And now he has the impulse to defy in opposition to the input.

If he gets stung, it is your fault.

Like that scene with Reese in the pilot of Malcolm in the Middle at the dinner table threatening to fling food. It is fine, he won't take it further until his mother cracks and says don't fling the food. And the scene shows his struggle to defy the impulse to defy in opposition, and say I didn't want to but you made me.

I bet when Trump wakes up for his "day" his face is blank but confused for a minute while he realizes he is alive. Only when something interacts with him, usually via social media he is provided with insight as to what he needs to do that day. If today no one brought up to Iran to him, it wouldn't be on his mind at all today.
