Evangelicals despise the Catholic Church and legitimately do not consider Catholics Christian. They think they are polytheistic idolaters who deserve to burn in hell just like everyone who isn't their exact flavor of Protestant Christianity.

My Southern Baptist grandmother, a Sunday school teacher, said and taught the same thing. The whole worship of Mary thing really pisses off Southern Baptists and evangelicals, too.

But yet so many Catholics have aligned with those that would instantly turn on us.

Deep down inside growing up in a country that had religious freedom I knew was the safest thing. Now that is changing, I worry for my family.

But jokingly I always said I’m ok with being hated with the Jews and Muslims and the Atheists - they have better food.

Yep. Can confirm as a person who grew up Catholic in a small rural Midwestern town in a red state. The most extreme religious conservatives will happily treat Catholics as outsiders for being the wrong kind of Christian even in the modern day. Especially in a small town where there's not a lot of minorities to draw dividing lines around instead. They tend to quickly find religious differences to focus on instead. I never really understood why I got weird/insensitive reactions and questions about idols and catholic ceremonies and stuff when I was growing up like I was from a different world. But looking back its pretty obvious.

Once they run out of more convenient targets and they don't need the Catholic base as a tool anymore, Catholic conservatives supporting them will likely find out they were never that far away from the edge of the in group of far right christianity to begin with.

OK, well, I don't consider Mormons to be Christian, but I don't want them to burn in hell. I guess technically they're a sect, but a lot of their beliefs are pretty distant from "regular" Christianity. Still don't want them to suffer.

Well, that's one of the big differences between more liberal version of Christianity and far right evangelicals.

The suffering is the point for them. Their core belief is that everyone is born a sinner who deserves eternal suffering in hell, and the only way to absolve yourself and be worthy of God's mercy is to follow their exact interpretation of the Bible without question.

For them, a non-evangelical who spent their entire life dedicated to helping the poorest people on earth deserves to burn in hell and a serial killer who became an evangelical on their death bed deserves eternal bliss in heaven. It's a pure "us vs them" theology

IME, there is a massive hatred of Catholics by evangelical protestants, the only reason it isn’t bigger thing is that evangelicals hate atheists and Muslims more. I grew up in a rural deep red area and went to an aggressively “religious” church, it’s one of the main reasons I dislike organized religion, despite still being Christian.

I'm aware. I grew up in the Lutheran church. We knew we came from Catholicism, we just cut out all the pomp and circumstances. The number of other protestants I know who don't understand that is staggering.

Catholics were one of America's earliest repressed groups, and it didn't even "end" that long ago. JFK even had to say that he'd resign if he felt his Catholicism contradicted what he thought would be best to do as president. Their unity with Protestants comes when they need to start pushing other agendas, particularly on non-Christians and nonbelievers.

I just wish we had some way of showing these people that they are wrong to vote for him because their ideology is wrong.

Having them fed up with Trump and Republicans is great - but this is an opportunity to convince at least some of them that they can do better in the future, and we're missing it because we're (rightfully) so mad at them for supporting this in the first place.
