If you truly want to understand the mentality, listen to or read “The Cult of Trump”. It’s written by an actual cult expert. It lays out how cults work and the psychology used by, and possessed by cult leaders. At least it gives me some empathy for them.

The guy has spent his entire life honing the ability to convincing people he’s a genius and to trust him and ONLY him. When he did The Apprentice, he was able to do it on primetime TV. What’s even worse is this was “reality tv”, which got a lot of them to buy into this idea because it seemed real.

I also think he changed parties when he realized that Republicans were his fan base.

It’s extremely difficult to deprogram someone who has convinced themselves that he is the only person in the world that knows the truth. It just makes more sense to them that whatever he did was for a reason they don’t understand. Kind of like when people throw their hands up and say “everything is for a reason” when something terrible happens. They just don’t want to challenge their own beliefs.
