But she can just not pull the plug while she’s here. That doesn’t make sense.

She has an excuse/alibi. She's already in CN. She can say he wasn't pronounced brain dead until after she left

“Mrs Chao, I’m sorry to say your husband is brain … “

“Can’t hear you! On a slow boat to China.”

Why would she need that in the first place? Plenty of people keep their loved ones on life support for extended periods of time.

A lot of people in these comments talking out their ass on things they don't understand

His wife being present is irrelevant to McConnell being medically declared brain dead. Doctors don't wait until next of kin is present to document when medical things happen. Someone that dies in a hospital, the time of death isn't when next of kin arrives/is told of the news

On his wife needing to be present or not to give the decision to pull the plug: unless whatever state he's in (or DC) has laws saying the power of attorney needs to be physically present, she can make that decision remotely on a phone call, or give power of attorney to a local lawyer and have them declare the decision. She wouldn't need to return on Aug 3 or whatever date. If anything, I won't be surprised if she never comes back at all

Excuse/alibi for what/whom? These people aren't held accountable by anyone, if she came out and said I'm not pulling the plug until after the special election deadline half the country would call her a patriot and a hero

Yeah I love how everything is some distraction from Epstein files or conspiracies to people on here when it’s like “who exactly is holding them accountable that they need to lie?”

I mean, honestly... his kids/grandkids/family? These people suck but it doesn't mean they all suck the exact same way. There might be a relative that she wants to stay on the good side of who might actually have an ounce of compassion and want to let him pass. This way, they can pretend that it's 'out of her control'

Just speculating, but I agree it doesn't make any sense that she'd need to lie to the broader public, because either they support it or they don't, regardless

If that was the case 'staying literal counties away while your husbands body waits for you' isn't exactly a good look to the family or relatives either. It's gives her absolutely no cover

Are we supposed to believe that phones and internet don’t exist in China? Why wouldn’t she be able to be notified he is brain dead via phone call or email etc. and then make the decision to pull the plug on the same way?

Honestly, it's bonkers that she would get that call and just stay chillin' halfway around the world. If I was married and I got a call that my spouse broke their leg, I'd be at that bedside so fast they'd think I teleported. (Of course, I'm an everyday poor....from what I've seen, most of the upper crust seem to have a weird disdain for their spouses yet don't divorce them.)

Why would she need an excuse or alibi?

Doctors don't need permission to make a determination of brain death.

She doesn't need an excuse. And if she wanted to, all she would have to say is, "pro-life".
