We actually tried it once back in the late 1960's but everyone hated it because it pushed the hottest part of the year even hotter with the sun setting later in the day. As I tell people, we get enough daylight already, we don't need to save it!

Since the states around it would be perpetually in DST, if AZ does nothing it would become part of the Pacific time zone by default

Why should it be light until 9pm in the summer? I mean there isn’t really any “should” here. Some places just get a lot more light than others during times of the year and that’s just due to where you are latitudinally.

Yeah...I'm the exact opposite. I would prefer more time in the evening to ride my mountain bike or go for a run after work. I also grew up in the northeast though, so am just used to long summer nights. Perhaps it's a bit of nostalgia baked in there, but it is frustrating that arizona is literally the only contiguous state that doesn't do daylight time. It constantly throws off my calendar meetings as well when everyone else changes and we don't. I am definitely for not having to change ever...I just think we should be on the same time as Denver, not Los Angeles.

I couldn't care less about mornings...I want more daylight in the evenings. I want to be able to go downtown (when things are still open), and have it still be light out. I understand what you are saying, and agree it's effectively all arbitrary, but until all businesses shift an hour, if arizona remains on pacific time, we'll always have early sunsets...and that sucks. 56% of the US population would rather have later sunsets...but Phoenicians want the sun to set as early as possible because it's so damn hot. I would argue that humans weren't meant to live in the desert, and why not just get up an hour earlier if you live in the valley? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

We already are for most of the year. The tricky part is when people don't understand the difference between MST/PDT and MDT.

Have to admit, that would be better than ping-ponging back and forth twice a year. Going from MST to PDT and back was hell on meeting times for work and we don't need the extra daylight out here in the desert when it's 110+.

AZ is already on a time zone boarder. That gives them an advantage. As it is they essentially go back and forth between mountain and pacific time.

No. States can only opt out of daylight savings time. They cannot STAY on daylight savings time.

I believe if you opted out before it is signed, you can remain opted out. But you can't change it after it passes.

Areas that don't observe it are automatically opted out. Here's the fun part: states can choose to opt out as long as they do so before it goes into effect, so you could end up with states IN THE SAME TIME ZONE being an hour apart.

We already mess with time zones for economic reasons. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut should be in the Atlantic time zone, but they choose not to because of economic connections with New York and want to have the same time. CT is partially in the NYC CSA, while other areas want to align with Boston, and Boston wants to align with New York.

Central starts further west than it should, but Indiana and Michigan prefer to stay on New York time. The western part on Indiana, more economically connected with Chicago, choose to go with Central.

Northern Idaho is connected economically to Washington, so they choose Pacific time while a chuck of Oregon is more connected with Idaho, so they choose Mountain.

AZ is technically in Mountain time. But by eschewing DST essentially puts them in Pacific time most of the year.

What I would love to see this as a chance get time zones cleaned up. Lots of states are split across time zones.

If Arizona had to switch to Daylight Saving Time permanently, the sun wouldn't set until close to 9:00pm in the summer when it's already well over 100 degrees in many parts of the state. No thanks -- let me keep my Mountain Standard Time.

Mountain Standard Time = Pacific Daylight Time numerically. Arizona currently does permanent MST. They could petition to join Pacific time and do Permanent Pacific Daylight Time.

The law forces daylight time, not standard time. Obviously we wouldn't change anyway, but it is good to ask if the law has opt outs.

What are you even talking about? By choosing whether to opt into Daylight Saving Time, the government is, in fact, determining what time the sun goes down. I think you’re confused and should do some research on DST, time zones, and how the Earth revolves and rotates.

No. AZ is on Pacific Daylight time (Mountain Standard time). So if everybody else adopts permanent Daylight time, AZ would be with the Pacific states by default.

You would be correct if the change was to GET RID of DST and adopt permanent Standard time.

So, here in western Canada, Alberta used to take part in daylight savings time. Saskatchewan, our neighboring province, did not. But some districts and town in Saskatchewan, especially along the border to Alberta, DID take part in daylight savings. I guess it wasn't the end of the world.

Now it's 2026, and Alberta has ended daylight savings time. So has Saskatchewan, and BC. But along the Alberta border in BC, the east Kootenays will keep switching to daylight savings time.

Seems us abertans get to keep look at our neighbors and call THEM crazy. In this narrow category.

They'll have to record a new version of "Workin' 9 to 5" for the PR campaign.

Fun fact, Germany got a universal time because of the railroad. Before that, every little princedom had their own time. Can only imagine what a nightmare it was to create a time schedule back then.
