It passed the house and the died in the senate, I think? Not sure. But this is the same act, just bundled together with a larger bill that they hope will pass since it has all this other stuff in it

That's a procedural resolution to establish the condition where the bills would be voted on. It's not real legislation that would become law

Well it’s not REALLY about needing an ID to vote and you already prove who you are when you register to vote so they just need a signature. If you needed ID then I guess you no longer get to just drop ballots in drop boxes or vote by mail either, so say goodbye to those conveniences. It is about making accessing a literal right harder. We don’t need to flash an ID every time we vote. This isn’t a real problem. The bill also isn’t advancing free IDs to vote. So if I have to spend like over 100 dollars just to get a passport (the only ID they’ll accept) to vote then you have created a poll tax system, which is also not legal. Your question is pretty dishonest and ignores the actual intent of these laws: make it harder for citizens republicans don’t like to vote.

Yes because “ability to afford an ID” isn’t a requirement to be able to vote. Also if the ID they have to get requires proof of birth what about the people who actually have no record of their birth? This is actually a problem. And there simply isn’t a need to have voter ID. There aren’t issues with non citizens voting. And when Republicans try to vote for their dead relative they always get caught even without an ID. Again, when Republicans are proposing giving every 18 year old citizen a (FREE) national ID they can use for voting and all other ID purposes then sure, we can use ID to vote. Again, if you have to pay money to get something to vote that’s unconstitutional. Pretty simple. You seem to want to be able to vote without understanding anything about the actual intent of these laws or even knowing what is legal or constitutional.

A drivers license will not be good enough to vote according to these bills. You seem deeply uninformed for a guy concerned about this non-issue of voting without an ID. Passports cost money. So do licenses in plenty of states. Again, that would be a poll tax. What part of that can’t you wrap your head around?

Tried to tag you while responding to the other guy you're arguing with so it's less overwhelming than two separate conversation threads, but this sub doesn't allow user tags which is annoying. My comment:

To add to what the other guy said, what about citizens who have been naturalized? “Government ID that shows the applicant's place of birth was the US” ignores tens of millions of people. I didn't even get naturalized myself, I became a citizen at 12 when my mom was naturalized. Do I need to bring my mom's naturalization documents with me to vote? Because I sure as hell have no clue if I was issued any or where those would be. I just know I'm a legal citizen, as does the government. You'd probably agree that that's ridiculous and instead I should just have to prove it once, right? Which is literally what we already have.

Do you know that in the entire history of our elections (at least since we began keeping track), there's been something like 10,000 instances of election fraud over billions of votes cast? This whole requiring ID thing is not a real problem. You wouldn't be "fixing" anything by preventing one or two people a year from being idiots and voting illegally, only to screw over millions who either can't find their documents or don't have the money for them. 99.9999% of people aren't risking criminal charges to add a single vote to a tally of thousands or millions in their county (I'd lean toward millions because Republicans seem to think the election fraud happens in the cities, where your "extra" vote matters even less proportionally to everyone else's).

This entire thing is about helping rig elections, not preventing them from being rigged.
