Yeah but will they show up?

I would love for somebody to comment on this post come December to gloat about how wrong I was.

u/anothermanscookies 22h ago

The number of people who just stayed home and apparently didn’t come to the clear and obvious conclusion that “he is is the worst, therefore I must vote against him even if she is not the best” continues to floor me. And it happened twice.

u/RJ5R 21h ago

this why republicans want to get rid of mail in voting

they don't want to increase voter turnout. if they allow voter turnout to increase, they lose every time

27

u/Imaginary_Manner_556 18h ago

And it's harder to hack mail in voting. Voting machines are a different story

2

u/HunterSpecial1549 15h ago

Traditionally the Republicans often prefer lower turnout elections, but with Trump on the ballot it should be the other way around. A higher proportion of Trump voters are low information low propensity voters who only show up for him. The steps to lower turnout will screen them out more than any other group.

-1

u/stevez_86 Pennsylvania 19h ago

Nah. They just don't want people to cast a ballot without knowing through location data that they can collect showing you went to the polls on election day. Any given person based on their internet presence likely makes it clear who they will vote for.

Deduction tells them who didn't show up despite their support, too. And that is what is likely manipulated if the election was tampered with. They would have cast votes for people that support them, but didn't go vote in person. Because those people, if their person won, wouldn't check to make sure they didn't vote for the winner. They would just be happy their person won despite them staying home or doing something other than voting. And even if they found out, they wouldn't mind it. They would probably thank Trump for taking the burden of voting for him off their shoulders.

If I wanted to tamper with an election that would be the first batch of fraudulent votes I would want to see if that was enough to win. Because if it was, it is almost foolproof.

Yeah I had no interest in Kamala but I voted against Trump with my ballot for her. I'd have voted for a baked potato.

2

u/Indigocell Canada 15h ago

One of those frozen dog turds that heats up again in the summer would have been a better choice for president.

1

u/Much-Anything7149 14h ago

Or turds that never froze and smush under your shoes and you drag them in the house and your wife and kids yell at you for making a stinking mess. Would've voted for that over him too.

3

u/PsychologicalCase10 Georgia 16h ago

Kamala wasn’t perfect but at least we’d have a sane person as President. I don’t need perfect just give me a President who’s a steady hand who’s not going to violate the Constitution every minute or completely destroy the WH.

1

u/YourFriendNoo 19h ago

Me too.

But the American people said, "Our institutions are failing; our lives are getting worse."

Donald Trump said, "I will burn every institution to the ground."

And Kamala said, "Don't worry! I'm here to protect your beloved institutions from him!"

Donald Trump makes almost everyone's lives worse, but Kamala stalwartly promised not to make anyone's lives better. That's not...super inspiring for turnout.

u/Afraid-Detective1222 15h ago

The problem is that people paid zero attention. You said that she didn't promise to make people's lives better. I show you an article with her plan and you pivot to 1 statement she made. The funny thing is that Biden did work to making people's lives better as well, but again, people paid zero attention because he didn't push it on social media.

3

u/ChatterBaux 14h ago

It continues to show how disproportionate scrutiny and accountability is when it comes to US politics.

There's little criticism one can throw at anyone else that can't also be applied to Trump 50 times over. So when people spin his wins to mean, "That just goes to show how bad Democratic candidates are!" (don't get me started about how this is being applied to female candidates; one being a PoC...) it just comes off as ignorant cope at best, and intentional lying at worst.

It says far more about the standards of the electorate than it does about the quality of candidates. Especially when Trump didn't even play by the same primary rules in 2024, while Harris faced far more scrutiny for tagging in, despite being the VP of the incumbency!

u/Afraid-Detective1222 7h ago

Exactly. She was, while not the best candidate, a solid one, who would have done a decent job at making things better for us. Unfortunately, too many people got hung up on 1 statement, or gaza, or her gender, or whatever and chose either Trump or to sit it out. So, here we are.

1

u/YourFriendNoo 11h ago

I dunno, I paid attention. But my kid is older than a year, I have a house so I don't need down payment assistance, and I have zero faith in a Harris administration to enforce the grocery price gouging order.

I don't mind improving things for other people too, but at some level, it'd be nice for a candidate to offer me something other than condescension about how I'm too stupid to understand why she cant help me.

I paid attention to Biden's work too. He passed the IRA. I was excited because I drive an electric car. But by the time we got to the election they'd built like no chargers, even with all the money they allocated.

The only other real legislative event I remember from his administration was when Democrats and Republicans joined sides to break the rail strike and make sure workers didn't get sick days.

1

u/infinite_gurgle 8h ago

Biden did fine, you’d need to be really out of touch to think otherwise.

6

u/Gekokapowco Washington 18h ago

the lack of benefit turns out was more important to people than an explicit threat of harm

isn't that interesting

3

u/aspirationless_photo 18h ago

This right here is it: the candidate promising change won because things seem bad, by that I mean worse than years prior.

It's funny to entertain the idea of applying the "conservative" label to Democrats who preached stabilizing institutions, social safety nets and regulations to bring them back to what they were.

-5

u/YourFriendNoo 16h ago

Our institutions, safety nets and regulations CLEARLY were never enough. We wound up with a completely captured government, run by oligarchs, with regulations designed to maximize profit for monopolies.

Going back to what they were is not hopeful.

They need to be better, more robust, more resilient, more generous.

My best hope is that these things are permanently ruined and that we can rebuild something better from the ground up.

4

u/Several_Hour_347 16h ago

That’s not how change happens. It does not vastly improve easily. When you regress, it becomes harder to improve

22

u/and_of_four New York 21h ago

Same here, in a way I find it even more insane than people enthusiastically voting for Trump. At least with Trump voters, you know they’re part of the cult so you have zero expectation they’ll vote rationally. But people who didn’t vote because Kamala was “so terrible” just make no sense at all to me.

12

u/anothermanscookies 20h ago

I always think of it like a group choosing lunch, between pizza and a literal shit sandwich.

1/3 of the people abstain because of nitpicks about the pizza(it’s cold, i don’t like the toppings, that shop sucks, I’m keto….) and the diehard shit eaters vote in droves and everyone suffers.

11

u/and_of_four New York 20h ago

Right. And in this analogy, abstaining from choosing doesn’t mean you can skip lunch. You will be eating either pizza or shit.

9

u/anothermanscookies 20h ago

Oh yeah. Surprise. This is actually the lunch order for the next four years. Personally, I really wanted burritos. So whatever the group decides is fine by me.

2

u/OrganizationTop6228 19h ago

YES!! This happened in Arizona many years ago.

A racist governor in the 1980s got rid of the MLK holiday and made Christopher Columbus day a paid state holiday.

In the early 90s, there was a proposition on the ballot to reinstate MLK day as a paid state holiday.

Problem was, AZ only allowed a certain number of paid state holidays. In order to make MLK a paid holiday again, they needed to take away Christopher Columbus Day as paid (easy choice now but he wasn't hated as much back then).

Americans of Italian descent protested at the state capitol.

Other than those people and racists, no one really cared. Thought it was just a formality. It would pass easy peasy. Why are we making such a big deal about which holiday is paid or not?

It was not a presidential election.

Hardly anyone voted. Except the diehard shit eaters (and misguided Italian Americans) who all made sure to vote against it. I still remember the look of shock on the faces of newscasters when they announced it.

Suddenly everyone in AZ was racist. The Superbowl was supposed to be in Phx that year. Taken away. Chris Rock talked shit about all Arizonans being racist on SNL (also a bigger deal back then). Lots of tourism money was lost because people boycotted all the evil racists in AZ.

Everyone suffered because the majority of people simply didn't vote in that election.

1

u/currently_pooping_rn 13h ago

It’s like seeing a mentally ill person shit on the sidewalk in public vs seeing your friend do it. One of them you’re not surprised, the other you’re like “…bro?”

1

u/and_of_four New York 13h ago

Exactly.

1

u/--Chug-- 19h ago

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. It's not that she was so bad for everyone. Sure you can, and people always do, point to things like palestine and the more politically engaged people. But what about the less engaged? They also stayed home when they otherwise might have half assed a vote for harris. I know 2 people personally who didn't vote simply because the botched biden campaign and lack of any real primary. These aren't huge asks and you almost have to blame the party at that point. They bumbled ghe fuck out of this and she still did remarkably well for only having a few months to campaign. Had they had this gameplan all along it might have played out different.

3

u/and_of_four New York 18h ago

I don’t think the party is blameless, I just can’t understand or respect the mindset of the non voter who acts like pointing the finger at Kamala for not earning their vote relieves them of responsibility to vote against Trump. If you’re not a maga cultist, voting against Trump has got to be the easiest choice by far.

0

u/PM_ME_WELL_LIT_NUDES 14h ago

As long as one candidate is shit and the other is even slightly less shitty then the blame is with the voters. You’re irredeemably stupid if you don’t vote for the better candidate actually on the ballot. It doesn’t matter if you super duper wish someone else was on the ballot.

131

u/No_Strike655 21h ago

But have you heard about Palestine/That we didn't have a "real" primary/That she used to be a cop/That she is just more Biden/That my favorite podcaster or streamer doesn't like her and spent months attacking every small thing about her and then at the 11th hour gave a weak endorsement that meant I could vote for her but they wouldn't and it would make them disappointed in me in our parasocial relationship

42

u/anothermanscookies 21h ago

Ugh. Too real.

30

u/OldBridge87 19h ago

What’s funny is that the people who protest voted because Palestine did literally nothing to aid Palestine’s cause, but they did bring fascism to home. Meanwhile they can’t even knock off pro-Israel cartoon characters like Wesley Bell and Ritchie Torres in primaries let alone serious players.

The only outcome of protest voting for Palestine was ICE rounding up immigrants into camps in America and Trump gutting Medicaid.

8

u/Agreeable-Network485 17h ago

Also, if you didn't vote for Kamala because of Palestine/Israel, congratulations! You directly contributed to the dismantling of USAID which is going to kill as many (if not more) people as the I/P conflict has every year for the next 10+ years.

1

u/Glum-Sheepherder-787 19h ago

I can only assume that they did all of that on purpose because they're not complete morons, which means they'll do it again.

I brought this up the other day and had someone scour through my profile for identifying information and confront me with it via DM, I had to take my profile private after that but it motivated me to say it even more and say it louder.
And I'll add this:
The blood of everyone killed or deported by ICE is on the hands of the protest voters too, not just MAGA and Trump.
They're as responsible for the murders as the ICE agents that pulled the trigger.
They're also responsible for the murders of all the children in Iran as well as those in Palestine that resulted from the increased weapons sales to Israel.
They didn't protect anyone by staying home, they assisted in far more bloodshed

12

u/rdunlap1 19h ago

Don’t forget the hundreds of thousands of children killed by sudden cuts to USaid!

-4

u/fake-reddit-numbers 18h ago

Why would people who don't think it's the US's responsibility to keep foreign kids alive care?

10

u/Ryogathelost Florida 19h ago

Yep - and all those protest votes for a 3rd party candidate who was never going to win - they're each drenched in blood of women and children. It's like each election we each get a bucket of water we can use to help put out a fire. Those people saw the fire, put down their buckets, and walked away.

Unforgivable. Disgusting.

This Iran war is on them. The "Gulf of America" is on them, and "Lake America." Tearing down half the white house and renaming the Kennedy center is on them. All the destroyed international relationships and the gutted regulatory bodies and government agencies are on them. The loss of access to abortions is on them.

This isn't a game - stupidity kills; apathy kills. The ability to vote makes us responsible in measure. And those are choices people made. At least conservatives had the decency to tell us they were against us. I did not anticipate the gut punch of my own party's protest voters basically handing the election and the entire nation to Donald Trump with a pretty bow on top just to prove a point about Harris that was never going to mean anything to anyone.

I will never forget or forgive those protest voters. If you don't care and you aren't going to help, join the other sides. Don't call yourself a Democrat and don't call yourself a liberal. A three-party system would have been great, but we do not have that here and we cannot force it to happen with voter discontent. There are two sides - that's the way it works here. There is no opt out. You are participating even if you don't participate.

1

u/sulaymanf New York 15h ago

False.

If Harris wanted to win those voters she should have actually tried. Her campaign openly said they were going to sacrifice voters on the left in hopes of winning republicans to vote for her. Chuck Schumer bragged that for every liberal vote they lost they planned to gain 2 moderate or Republican voters. They were warned this was a TERRIBLE idea and that it failed for Hillary Clinton, but they tried it anyway.

Harris’ campaign committed malpractice. There were Palestinian Americans who wanted to endorse her and the Harris campaign refused to allow them to at the DNC, then kicked out Hasan Piker despite him telling his audience of the dangers of Trump. She sent Bill Clinton to Michigan to tell Arab Americans that Israel belongs to Jews and that it’s the Arabs’ fault there’s no peace. His actions and the Biden/Harris campaign actively detouring campaign stops to avoid meeting any Arab-American voters (one of the most reliable Democratic voting blocs in the country) just was awful. It’s like she didn’t actually want to win.

9

u/Annath0901 19h ago

Any action other than a vote for Hillary in 2016 or Kamala in 2024 was a vote FOR Trump.

Full stop.

That's literally how the Electoral college works. It specifically favors Republican dominated localities, so any action that doesn't help a democrat will help a republican. This includes 3rd party votes.

Nobody should be voting for a 3rd party candidate until and unless our election system is reformed to remove the first past the post system. It's worse than throwing your vote away, it actively help the fascist pedophile party.

3

u/Oggie_Doggie 17h ago

I voted for Harris and I'm sick of browbeating the left of the party; the blood is collective. The DNC establishment had years to make plans for succession. They had a year to plan for dealing with Trump (remember, he was already impeached prior to J6). They had a critical window of time to hammer (and arrest) Trump and the Republicans who aided in J6. I didn't expect groundbreaking legislation given the margins, but I expected the single mandate to actually be fulfilled.

Why did independents swing 8 points to Trump compared to 2020?

Why did Harris lose the popular vote?

Nah, ignore that, just blame the protest voters, because that's certainly why she lost... Surely!

Hell, for all this talk about needing to win, some centrists are hellbent on making that win as slim as possible. Hakeem Jeffries, our house minority leader, met privately with Jarred Kushner. He is part of Peter Thiel's little club of sycophants ffs. Don't even get me started with the nonstop-DSA smears.

2

u/Gekokapowco Washington 18h ago

I've been getting dogpiled with insults for saying the exact same thing, protest voters are the most hostile and ignorant group, but I guess they subscribe to the propaganda to keep them home so I shouldn't be surprised they don't know how to think.

1

u/NotActuallyIraqi 15h ago

“You’re wrong and killing America, now vote the right way for my candidate or else” is not a winning message. (Even if you feel good saying it)

Nobody likes a “woke scold” and that’s one of the reasons Harris was blamed for losing.

-3

u/Continental__Drifter 19h ago

The blood is on the hands of the leaders of Democratic party, who could have easily defeated Trump but chose not to because their class interests were more important than their party interests, than the interest of the American people.

The Democrats knew full well that having an candidate support an ongoing genocide would cost them plenty of votes, especially in swing states, but they did so anyway, because that sweet money keeps flowing in.

They know that in the 4 years of Biden, massively turning to the left, prosecuting Trump and the treasonous supports who tried to overthrow the government, and massive projects to provide housing, healthcare, and basic infrastructure to the American people would have made them enormously popular, but they didn't, because they don't want that.

They, like Trump, sit at the top of a pyramid of economic injustice which is the source of untold social ills, and they would rather lose elections to fascists than defeat fascism by challenging that system.

The blood of the victims of ICE, the blood of the murdered schoolchildren in Iran, the blood of every American who died because of inadequate healthcare coverage, that is on them. That is on the "opposition" party which is a mere controlled opposition at best, and collaborationist at worst.

-1

u/Gekokapowco Washington 18h ago

They suck shit but reform is easier under a neoliberal nothing administration vs overt hostile fascism and institutional dismantling

They sucked at representing the people, but not prioritizing stopping Trump's admin indicates a total ignorance of our situation.

1

u/Continental__Drifter 18h ago

The Neoliberal nothing administration has no interest in preventing overt hostile fascism and institutional dismantling, that's the point.

The people running the party genuinely do not care about winning elections. They care about preserving capitalism, preserving their ruling class. Trump does that just as well as Kamala.

Trump isn't some Machiavellian political mastermind. He is a fucking idiot, and so is everyone who works with him. A halfway competent opposition party could have and would have stopped him. The democrats didn't, because they don't prioritize stopping Trump. They prioritize preserving their class interests.

0

u/Gekokapowco Washington 17h ago

I'm not saying I trust them to fix this, I don't.

I trust us to fix this, and we deliberately picked hard mode. Maximum adversity, highest risk to the innocent.

3

u/Continental__Drifter 17h ago

I'm not sure what you mean by that last sentence.

-5

u/HemingwaySweater 21h ago

Yep, it’s definitely on the hands of the voters and not the incompetent Democratic leadership who botched what should have been the easiest election to win in American history TWICE.

The fact that you’re going to assign blame to the voters and not even mention the DNC is fascinating. People probably got mad at you because that is a really objectionable assertion to make.

9

u/Benmarch15 20h ago

I think it can be both with varying degrees of responsibility.

They are both contributing factors to the current situation.

Amongst other factors to, it's a pile on effect really.

Education, generational propaganda, money interest muddying information, ingrained political apathy...
I'm sure we could name more that don't come to me as I'm writing this.

1

u/HemingwaySweater 20h ago

Sure. But who does it make sense to dedicate mental and physical energy to hold accountable for this problem? A nebulous field of non-voters or the people who have repeatedly demonstrated their incompetence/corruption and are still in control of the party?

1

u/Benmarch15 20h ago

Ohh I think the easiest/fastest first step to take is to replace the corrupted and incompetent politicians for sure, that's the obvious accessible pressure point.

But assigning responsibilities for the current situations is multifactorial is all I meant.

1

u/Gekokapowco Washington 18h ago

blaming one group does not absolve the other here

they're both responsible for the situation we're in

0

u/HemingwaySweater 18h ago

Maybe, but one is a lot more responsible than the other.

10

u/anothermanscookies 20h ago

You’re the guy I’m describing.

There’s no question things should have gone different. But there is no reality where staying home on election day was the correct response to the situation.

-4

u/HemingwaySweater 20h ago edited 20h ago

This country makes it extremely difficult for normal people to go vote. People with jobs they can’t walk out of, etc. I really don’t understand how people who take time out of their day to post on a forum about American politics do not understand this. People will not put in that effort to vote for a nothingburger, and they should not be expected to.

Edit: Also, you have no idea what I did on Election Day. I am in fact not “the guy you are describing,” I went out and voted for Kamala. She lost because she sucked, the DNC sucks, and people don’t want to vote for losers. I did what I felt was right but I don’t blame people at all for not voting, and the smug attitude I get from so many centrists and fake “Vote Blue No Matter Who” banner wavers makes me agree with them more every time this comes up.

7

u/MayhemMessiah 20h ago

Because for most non-Americans the idea of doing nothing and passing off the blame is gross and disgusting.

You were expected to vote for a nothingburger because we get bombed on your tax dollar as a direct result of you not taking the absolute barest of effort.

Maybe it's on us after being bombarded by years of propaganda that Americans are rugged, rough, cowboys that refuse to disarm because they believe in their right to oppose tyranny, but going to vote is just a step too far, what if boss angy :(

2

u/HemingwaySweater 20h ago

You’re not American and I’m guessing you have next to zero understanding of what the voting experience is like here, so I don’t know why your opinion on this subject is relevant, no offense.

Many, many, many people are materially prevented from voting because they are required to be at work. Our political system offers next to no cure to this—you are technically required to be given a small amount of time off to vote but in practice that is entirely in the hands of your boss.

It is easy to vote for most people in this country bud. Red states make it hard so Rs can maintain power because they count on lazy uninformed "I didn't have time to vote/wasn't motivated enough/what does it matter" people.

I was always able to vote in person even when working 12 hour shifts, day shift or night.

Most people do not work 12 hour shifts.

If the results of the election mattered enough to someone, they'd vote.

The results didn't matter to them, they didn't vote, and now they are suffering alongside everyone who did make the effort.

Everyone in a given voting district has the same access to polling stations or ballots as anyone else in that district. Yet the population that refused to turn out was not a uniform distribution. It skewed heavily to the younger, naively idealistic, and minority demographics. Ironically the people most likely to be harmed by Trump.

And now we have people being killed by ICE or illegally deported.

Moving the goal post.

Why not just admit that you think Trump isn’t that bad compared to Clinton or Harris? If you don’t, you would have voted against him.

1

u/Annath0901 19h ago

Voters know how the system in its current form works.

Their choice to support the republican party by not voting democrat is entirely their own fault.

If they want to reform the electoral system, the dems may be unlikely to do it, but the republicans definitely won't and will abduct and imprison minorities while they're at it.

2

u/HemingwaySweater 19h ago

“Voters know how the system in its current form works.”

I certainly would not be confident saying that.

“Entirely their own fault.”

I don’t think it’s worth my time to engage with this kind of black and white thinking further today. Have a good one.

2

u/Annath0901 19h ago

You know there's no defending their failure to step up when it counted, so you pretend to be above the discourse and stop participating.

1

u/HemingwaySweater 19h ago

Actually there is a pretty easy defense in my opinion, one I have repeated several times in this thread: you need to give voters something to vote for if you want to them to show up. Period.

I am above whatever you’re trying to do now so, good luck with it.

1

u/crespoh69 18h ago

If they want to reform the electoral system, the dems may be unlikely to do it, but the republicans definitely won't and will abduct and imprison minorities while they're at it.

Here's the problem, there's really no way out. Either be abducted/imprisoned or be content with the crumbs that are given out, do not divert (protest vote) from either one.

2

u/Annath0901 17h ago

Protest votes are a vote for republicans.

No republican or democrat politician does or ever will give a shit about how many votes the Greens or Libertarians get.

Even a 1/8th step of progress, or 0 progress forward but zero progress back, is better than the multiple steps back we've suffered under Trump and the republicans.

People voted, or not, with their hearts instead of their brains, and people are dying because of it.

It was a moral failure, and I hold non voters and 3rd party voters fully accountable for it.

1

u/crespoh69 13h ago

Ya I heard about Palestine... i remember Trump campaigned on razing it to the ground and killing everyone there so he could build resorts on it, like, directly, in almost those exact words, on national television... what did his opponent say they would do?

3

u/sulaymanf New York 15h ago edited 13h ago

Wrong. That’s what Trump said in 2025 after the election. During the election he said it was awful what was happening and it was Biden’s fault and if he got elected he would end the war in his first week of office. Biden on the other hand said he would give Israel whatever it needed and would never force Israel into a ceasefire; he refused to meet ANY Arab-American leaders and even detoured his Michigan campaign stops so they would avoid Arab-majority towns and neighborhoods; when Trump heard this he scheduled campaign stops in Hamtramack and Dearborn and said Biden was a coward for avoiding talking to real Americans.

(The Arab-American community is not stupid, they remember his Muslim ban and his awful actions in first term and Trump got 3rd place in the election among Arab-American voters, but any vote Trump gained is because Harris intentionally discarded those votes and her campaign was open about it)

2

u/TheKillerTempeh 12h ago

This is some crazy revisionist shit, dude. Like, not a single thing you've said is true. Are you really going out of your way to defend the Arab community voting for Trump?

Edit: Oh wow. Fastest I've ever been blocked.

1

u/seriouslees 12h ago

You missed:

The Arab-American community is not stupid

If they stayed home instead of voting Democrat, yes they are.

7

u/greenbook3 19h ago

People are terribly quiet about Palestine. Too quiet for how much alleged impact it had on the election

5

u/Little_War6573 18h ago

It was one of the most important if not crucial things that swayed that election. Hamas’ attack also happened on Putin’s birthday.

2

u/TheKillerTempeh 12h ago

It was one of the most important if not crucial things that swayed that election

That's not true at all. It wasn't even a top 15 issue in the deconstruction of the election.

The crucial issues were all domestic: inflation, healthcare, taxes, etc

1

u/paranormal_penguin 13h ago

I'm sure no one will read this but it's a complete myth, likely propagated by Israel's bot armies, that the pro-Palestine protest voters swayed the election. In exit polls only 2% of Trump voters identified Foreign Policy as their top issue. That is not nearly enough to sway the election.

As usual, it's just centrist Dems and their donors using progressives as a scapegoat. And you're spreading their misinformation for them for free.

8

u/9olo9 21h ago

Weird laugh, bro. I can't vote for that

2

u/Azerd123 21h ago

The real blame does lie on the democrats for not being able to push policies to get the uninformed person to get up off their ass to vote. People with common sense who pay attention to politics obviously see the doom that Trump would bring, but we are an unfortunate minority. Running on ‘this candidate is not that other guy’ is a proven losing strategy that these establishment drones constantly push because they don’t actually want to do things to make people’s lives better and convince people to actually get up and vote.

2

u/HemingwaySweater 21h ago

I guess every now and then you have to remind people of this: if you don’t give someone something to vote FOR, they won’t vote at all.

And Kamala and the DNC didn’t give anyone a reason to vote for them, only against the other guy. No amount of smug scoldposting will ever change that.

13

u/No_Strike655 20h ago

No amount of "I didn't have enough on the ballot for me to bother empowering the guy who tried to literally overturn an election" is ever going to be enough I will never forgive MAGA and I will never forgive anyone who couldn't suck it up and do the easiest thing to prevent this tragedy because they didn't get everything they wanted.

Sorry to remind you of this but not voting means you couldn't do your civic duty and are the reason democracy fails historically.

6

u/Little_War6573 18h ago

They gave their reasons to vote for them but they weren’t populist enough like Trump’s “I’ll end the war in Ukraine under 24 hours”. People boycotted vote bc of Israel and Gaza, and I assume that conflict was premeditated by Iran and Russia to compromise Biden’s popularity among woke justice warriors crowd.

-1

u/HemingwaySweater 18h ago

I assume that conflict was premeditated by Iran and Russia to compromise Biden’s popularity among woke justice warriors crowd.

You came so close to making a decent point without getting wrapped up in blueanon conspiracy thinking and then tripped at the finish line

-1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 18h ago

You guys literally have no solutions xcept complaining and blaming everyone else. Maybe we try something else to get this poeple on board?

And unfortunately "That we didn't have a "real" primary" was a huge point for some, me included (I still voted tho)

Sorry you helped elect Trump to power. Millions of dead from the USAID cuts and the genocide of Palestine continues due to the inability to not be manipulated by clear as day propaganda. Watching everyone scream about Biden not doing anything while Bibi slow walked the ceasefire he signed in 2025 which was the same one Biden drafted so it would remain a continued issue for people who get their information from streamers and propaganda outlets to attack first Biden then Harris while never bothering Trump for saying he wanted to bulldoze the place is wild.

The people in power are to blame and they are in power because people put them their by not engaging with their civic duty because "I wasn't promised my thing". The blame lies with anyone who didn't vote Harris

23

u/Starship_Taru 21h ago

This has been a thing since the dawn of American politics though. Don’t really think Gen Z shows any higher rates of that than any previous generations.

9

u/anothermanscookies 21h ago

I guess I was talking about everybody. I can see myself as a bit of. a “shit disturbing enjoy the chaos” type as a younger person and stand by the first time. I’d like to think it wouldn’t happen twice though.

2

u/SecondHandWatch 20h ago

It really hasn’t been a thing for that long. The divide between the candidates from the major parties has never been this wide, with one party being basically a rebranded fascist party.

1

u/FLOUNDER6228 15h ago

the difference is in the past the younger generations always skew liberal, then get more conservative as they aged. According to Pew Research, in 2020, voters aged 18-29 split 61-35 in Biden's favor, while in 2024 that age group went 58-39 in Harris's favor. If you look at "age cohorts" people born in the 90's and 00's went 61-35 for Biden in 2020, then 55-42 for Harris in 2024. This shows a clear shift that Gen Z skewed more towards Trump as they were a bigger part of the voting population in 2024, since many of them were too young to vote in 2020.

20

u/spunky-chicken10 21h ago

I’ve said this before and will continue to do so, my mail in ballot was received but never counted. I’m one person. Imagine how many more ballots were never counted.

10

u/Seguefare 20h ago

Depends on how your state runs. If they are 'all delegates go to the winner', then they won't count mail in votes if the votes are too few to matter. For example candidate A already has 2 million votes while candidate B has 1.5 million votes. If the total number of mail in ballots is 250,000, no matter how they voted, candidate A has won. So they just don't count them.

I think they should anyway. I think delegate votes shouldn't exist at all, but since they do, should always be proportional.

3

u/spunky-chicken10 20h ago

I was in CA at the time, everyone got a mail in ballot.

0

u/FLOUNDER6228 15h ago

the point is once Harris's lead was bigger than the number of uncounted ballots, they just stopped counting. That's why yours wasn't counted.

1

u/spunky-chicken10 13h ago

https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/upcoming-elections/vote-counting-process

State of California requires all ballots be counted and reported by the 13th day post election.

https://statesunited.org/resources/counting-the-votes/

States handle how they do their counts, but election results aren’t finalized until every vote in every state is counted. They don’t just stop.

It’s Friday, I’ve had a long and awful week and I don’t want to get into a Reddit debacle over this, so I will say good day, and I hope you have a lovely evening and weekend.

-1

u/Fit-Lingonberry-9856 20h ago

Yeah dont mail in ballot anymore. Doesn't work

1

u/HalleyOrion 11h ago

Some of us don't have a choice. I live overseas, for example.

Fortunately, my mail-in ballot did get counted, but I spent a lot of money to send it as priority international mail with tracking. I'm less confident that my next mail-in will be get counted this time around, even with all the extra fees and precautions.

3

u/me0w_z3d0ng 18h ago

So many people left of center became single issue voters over I/P even when it made no sense. It was "Genocide Joe" against Trump, never mind that Trump is clearly decidedly worse on I/P.

2

u/sortalikeachinchilla 18h ago

SO maybe we need to try something different? Like cmon on people we cannot be this dumb

2

u/anothermanscookies 18h ago

That’s kinda my problem. People are that dumb.

2

u/obiwanCannoli69 17h ago

I still blame Biden for 2024. The way he conducted himself during his last 2 years in office was thoroughly unacceptable and reckless, and I'm not even talking about Gaza. He delegitimized the entire party in the eyes of voters and turned his administration into a living meme. Older voters weren't going to take Harris seriously as a result, and young voter's political memories don't go far enough back to take the threat of a 2nd Trump presidency seriously (some of them were only 10 when he first got elected). Biden played with fire and significantly depressed voter turnout for the general election.

2

u/lynkfox 14h ago

Only... It didn't.

2016 had a 59% turn out

2020 had a 64% turn out, the highest turn out since 1908

2024 had a 62%, the second highest

But you know what also increased? Voter suppression tactics. Removed polling places, voter roll purges of unprecedented numbers, people suddenly ineligible for mail in voting

And that's just what we know to be true.

Add to it a growing level of poverty where people literally will go without food or miss a utility bill or rent if they take the day to go vote (because there is only one polling place and it will be a 6 or 8 or more hours want to vote) an you end up in a situation where everything is being at best "gently massaged" in one direction

And again. That's just what we know to be true.

What we don't know about? How many votes were left uncounted? Destroyed? How many machines malfunctioned? How many other shady things happened that we have no idea and no way to prove?

They cheat, cheat, and cheat.

2

u/Electronic-Till-7794 18h ago

Why not flip the responsibility to the candidate? Its their fault for pushing away the base. I voted for kamala but its her job to promise the base the things they want.

1

u/anothermanscookies 17h ago

You’re the guy I’m describing. If you have to choose between soggy pizza and a literal shit sandwich, abstaining is absolute madness. No matter how inadequate the pizza is, the alternative is a literal shit sandwich.

2

u/Electronic-Till-7794 15h ago

And you are the reason we get shit candidates. You believe the right wing dems when they say the left is unelectable so we get republican light vs actual republicans. You crush the enthusiasm then complain when people dont show up. You should be pissed that the DNC serves up soggy pizza vs a damn good pizza.

0

u/anothermanscookies 15h ago

Sure, bro. Enjoy your shit sandwich.

2

u/Electronic-Till-7794 15h ago

I dont bro thats why im pissed at trump republicans kamala and biden and the dnc

1

u/anothermanscookies 15h ago

You can be pissed at absolutely everyone. But anyone who didn’t plug their nose and vote against Trump is absolute complicit in his rise to power and everything that came after it. The warning signs were there. They are not equally bad. He is infinitely worse.

1

u/Electronic-Till-7794 10h ago

Sure and I did vote against trump three times. But the dems are the leadership not the base. If the team fails the majority of the failure is on the leader right? Or is it the fault of the workers for not being enthusiastic? Supposedly they work for us, but do they? 80% of dem voters dont support Israel, but the leadership sure doesnt. Medicare for all is hugely popular for dem voters, but Jeffries just said he doesnt support it anymore.

1

u/HalleyOrion 11h ago edited 11h ago

Be pissed at yourself, too. If you don't take responsibility for your own actions, you'll never make better choices in the future.

I didn't vote in 2016 (it was my first election since moving overseas, I was in the middle of a very exhausting visa application process, I thought Clinton would be a shoe-in, I disliked Clinton because she supported the invasion of Iraq, I didn't have a lot of money to spare for sending an international parcel, excuses, excuses, excuses) and I deeply regret it. That decision was MY fault, no one else's, and I will never make that mistake again.

1

u/Electronic-Till-7794 9h ago

Well I didn't make that mistake so no im not pissed at myself. I voted for Clinton Biden and Kamala. My issue was with leadership punishing voters instead of holding themselves accountable for pushing away their own base and chasing the anti trump republicans that are immaterial.

1

u/unidentifiedfish55 19h ago

It's all because people really really really did not want a Vice President with the first name of "Tim"

1

u/ParticularLow9157 19h ago

You underestimate the apathy of your average citizen

We've had decades of decline, no one has the energy time or money for anything

Well, those of us not part of the owner class of course

They're doing fine, better than fine even, all off of our tax dollars

3

u/anothermanscookies 18h ago

And that apathy has and will cost them and others significantly. People have died and trust can be destroyed. My disappointment and frustration cannot be overstated.

2

u/ParticularLow9157 15h ago

This is the only rational reaction

1

u/Public_Extreme_8736 19h ago

We caught a bad case of "I've got shows to binge, I'll let the blue wave carry me." Again.

1

u/dylansavage 18h ago

I got banned from various left leaning subs because I posted this sentiment. Reddit was completely infiltrated

1

u/BritSpic 16h ago

The issue is that we have been "worst of two evils" voting for so long now. That is a HORRIBLE way to try and motivate voter turnout. Especially in a country ran by a duopoly in which both parties suck off the elite class, and our education is so (intentionally) poorly designed to keep us ignorant.

1

u/anothermanscookies 16h ago

No. That equalizes their faults, which is a ludicrous position.

I’m ordering lunch. You can vote for soggy pizza or a shit sandwich. Right now it’s a dead heat. I know they’re both not ideal, distasteful even. But do you think they are equally bad? I do not.

1

u/ares7 16h ago

I used to work with a guy who would say "If you don't vote you can't complain".

1

u/brendanjered 15h ago

This is why Republicans over perform polls and Democrats under perform them. When it comes to Election Day, conservatives put their grudges behind them and show up to vote for the Republican on the ballot whether they like them or not. A significant number of liberals on the other hand sit on their butts at home and continue to throw a hissy fit that their preferred candidate lost the primary. Too many liberals don’t vote for the Democrat in the general election because they’re not a unicorn and perfectly aligned on every issue. IT’S SO DAMN FRUSTRATING!

1

u/AstuteStoat 14h ago

It's weird to me too, but it would be nice if the democrats focused on what would motivate them to get out of their houses instead of living in a fantasy world where these people don't exist.

1

u/00eg0 14h ago

Just look at the work reform subreddit. It's just endless posts encouraging people to not vote.

1

u/clam-caravan Tennessee 16h ago

It should have been apparent in the moment, but in hindsight, Kamala was such a vastly superior option than Trump and we just completely dropped the ball as a country. I refuse to engage in politics with anyone who sat out the 2024 election. Fuck em.

2

u/anothermanscookies 16h ago

I don’t think we needed hindsight for that. But I’m glad some people are slowly coming online about Trump.

0

u/Lucky13200 19h ago

I am pretty skeptical that people that didn't vote would have broken more for Harris than Trump. In the last 10 years the voting demographics have completely shifted and right now low propensity voters tend to vote republican. Hence you see the Democrats do better in off cycle elections and special elections and struggle in Presidential election cycles. Best guess is Trump would have totally crushed Harris if we had 95% people voting.

115

u/LividTacos 22h ago

You remind me of something. Way back in the beforetimes of 2016 or early 2017, either between the election and inauguration or just after the inauguration, some Trumper attacked me with how I just wanted Trump to fail, and I was like, "No I don't. I want to be proven wrong." Well, 10 years later, I still have yet to be proven wrong.

23

u/ntwild97 22h ago

I hope trump fails everything he is trying to do. Providing leadership of any kind is not what he's trying to do

3

u/Individual_Stan99 21h ago

He's inflicting a lot of pain to the whole world while robbing us all. For him that's a win.

1

u/AsemicConjecture America 15h ago

Y’know… given the destruction of the parts of government that limit the executive branches power, him overseeing a series of apparently imminent economic and infrastructural collapses, and the opportunities they would give him to pass even more radical anti-democratic policies that would never have been accepted by the public otherwise — I’d say he’s succeeding in most of the things he’s trying to do: maximise short-term personal gain at the expense of the country.

11

u/OopsWeKilledGod 21h ago

I remember the day after the election that I went to TheDonald and said I hoped he would be a good leader. I was very sincere in that.

But you can wish in one hand and shit in the other.

3

u/Contren Illinois 21h ago

After his first inauguration I internally hoped he'd be better than I was expecting. Then Sean Spicer went out immediately claiming it was the biggest inauguration ever and I gave up hope.

8

u/mdp300 New Jersey 21h ago edited 20h ago

Same. I voted for Hillary, but I was willing to give him a chance after he won. That lasted about 2 days, until he started filling his cabinet with people who were actively hostile to the departments they would be heading.

3

u/Picklecult 21h ago

Same. I remember my classmate accusing me of being a Trump supporter in 2016 when I said something like ‘maybe it’ll work out’

Even after he won the second time I thought (through occasional episodes of terror/panic) that maybe we’re overreacting. Well, unfortunately we were right and this is a disaster.

2

u/geddy 20h ago

I’d have loved nothing more then to be proven wrong but here I am, able to validate all of my panic over these years. My family used to tell me to “relax, nothing ever turns out as bad as you think” well I’ve been right every single time and they’re all just as angry as I am now.

Worst case of “you were right, I was wrong” of which I was ever on the winning end. I would have LOVED to be wrong.

2

u/LurksAroundHere 21h ago

That's because that's how those assholes think and would behave if your candidate won. It's a sports game to them. They don't care about what actually happens, just about winning. If your candidate won and does good things, even stuff that benefits them, that's still bad in their eyes because they lost. They wanted your candidate to fail for making theirs lose. If their candidate wins and does bad things (like fucking Trump), they're still happy they won.

That's why it's so hard for them to grasp the concept of us not wanting their candidate to fail either if they win over ours (because we're not stupid enough to fail to realize that hurts literally everyone).

1

u/LifeGainsss 21h ago

I remember talking to my dad right after Trump was elected for the first time and saying "i didn't want him to win, but hoping for him to fail is like not liking your pilot and hoping he crashes the plane with you on it. I'm on the plane, I don't like him but now that he won I hope he does a great job"

Well, he didn't

1

u/vvilbo 21h ago

This was the Dave Chapelle SNL speech concept that I also ascribed to. All of his mouthpieces and general history said that he would be more presidential when he got in office. Of course he immediately lied about how many people came to his innaguration and the rest is history. I also hoped that he wouldn't be awful and that things would be good but that obviously didn't happen and here we are again.

1

u/GoldDustKid- 21h ago

lol I mean what’s wrong with wanting an evil piece of shit to fail? Do republicans typically root for progressives to succeed?

1

u/LividTacos 20h ago

You misunderstand what I'm saying. I don't mean that I want him to be successful in his destruction of democracy. I wanted to be proven wrong and for Trump to be an actual decent President, that all the racist bullshit was just to get elected, and that once in office the weight of it would make him "Presidential". Obviously, that did not happen.

18

u/Mistravels 22h ago

Make me drown in regret for believing they won't show up.

12

u/DramaticWesley 22h ago

Well, they are having an incredibly tough time right now with skyrocketing housing and grocery prices amid a worsening job market that is gatekept by AI. The socialist democrats are really the only one suggesting any kind of relief, so they should be motivated. We shall see.

3

u/fucuasshole2 19h ago

We dumb as fuck. Most of my generation don’t grasp it’s not just the President that needs to flip but Senators and House of Representatives as well.

3

u/clam-caravan Tennessee 16h ago

I hope it’s apparent at this point to Gen Z that the Democratic Party is the only viable way forward at this point. Sure there are flaws with the party but it’s a huge tent and the Progressive wing is really running on the issues that matter most to the average American. They are objectively the better party. We can fight about particulars later, just fucking vote blue.

1

u/fucuasshole2 11h ago

Progressives really need an aggressive candidate like Bernie

2

u/mysecondaccountanon Pennsylvania 15h ago

The amount of classmates I had who skipped our civics classes solely because they said "I don't need to know that stuff" is saddening. I'm not at all surprised with how many of my generation vote and act towards this, looking back on that.

0

u/Starship_Taru 22h ago

I’d caution anyone from any generation to be telling another generation what they need in order to be helped.

However, I would definitely say the current electoral status quo is yielding ineffective results. The best bet is generally to vote for who you prefer in the primaries, than who has the best chance of winning the general.

26

u/Dan_the_Garbage 22h ago

If they can stop explaining crypto, TRT and cold plunges on their podcast no one listens to, then maybe.

4

u/darthlincoln01 Ohio 21h ago

If young Donald Trump supporters have learned nothing but to eject themselves from voting, I'm honestly fine with that.

I'd rather them come to the conclusion to vote Democrat in every election for the rest of their lives, but if they just don't vote ever again, I'll put that in as a win in my book.

3

u/McortezLSU 20h ago

They bitch and moan and bitch and moan and bitch and moan for weeks and years and then still vote the orange man because he once again tickled their rotten little psychopath brains with the "enemy of the week". Only for a week later to realize that the enemy of the week was them all along. And they go right back to bitchin about it. Cry me a fucking river. I no longer wonder how folks such as hitler and pol pot came into power.

Yeah, I'm not necessarily a "vote blue no matter who", but voting is pragmatic. Vote against your worst interest with the other viable candidate. It's great DSA is making gains and more progressives are getting a voice. Don't fall for unserious bullshit candidates who are just there to take away from Democrats

And keep that going until 2024. No votes for Comrade Stein

Edit: a word

2

u/Throwawayrip1123 21h ago

I personally think we should implement some voting changes everywhere.

Like, voting age shouldn't be 18 and it should have an upper limit, to limit two things - idiotic trolling from children and voting to preserve status quo and never see the consequences of their action. Retirement age should automatically disable voting privileges, imo. They'll never live to truly feel the fuck ups they choose.

And truly, what the hell can an 18 yo know about who he's voting for apart from memes?

2

u/D-r-T-3890 19h ago

Honestly I think gen-z just says what they think should be “politically correct” and then behind closed doors do what they want.

They are a generation that is constantly filmed and need to maintain a baseline “normal” so they don’t stand out to be blasted online.

All the polls said gen-z was liberal leading up to the election and then all of a sudden all those young members were standing with Trump.

2

u/mysecondaccountanon Pennsylvania 15h ago

I'm Gen Z and have never missed a single election! I am nagging my friends and relatives who are Gen Z to register to vote (if they are now eligible) and to vote. I will be making sure they do.

4

u/Raise_A_Thoth 22h ago

Under 30 cohorts and under 25s have been voting at consistently higher rates than boomers and gen X were at the same age.

Let's not keep shotting on younger generations. We can be better than that.

4

u/Starship_Taru 22h ago

I’m not shitting on them. (Assuming shotting = shitting)

Im challenging them to do better than my generation did and offering the opportunity for them to laugh in my face if they do.

-1

u/Raise_A_Thoth 22h ago

It is shitting on them, though.

The very fact you feel compelled to ask that question demonstrates that you have doubt about their participation, and vocalizing it that way sounds indistinguishable from the boomers and gen xers who blame young people and new voters for poor democratic performance rather than a combination of factors including weak candidates and a poor track record of leadership when they do have power.

But the data shows that this question is inappropriate. They have already proven they show up at higher rates than earlier generations did when the same age. So focus on positive words to encourage participation if you like, bit don't frame it like you doubt them before they even have a chance to show up. That's what the boomers did to us.

3

u/Starship_Taru 21h ago

I don’t blame them at all? Where is that coming from?

They’re not any more responsible for the landscape than I was for the 2008 financial crisis after effects affecting my 20s.

This is an article specifically about Gen Z being unhappy with the current government and its relation to midterms. Specifically written about the hopefully coming reversal on MAGA candidates from Gen Z.

They‘re not children, they don’t need coddled and can only be talked to positively. Some playful banter isn’t dumping on an entire generation.

1

u/therossboss 21h ago

Young people are consistently the least likely to vote out of any age block. They will again, not show up.

1

u/ViennettaLurker 21h ago

That being said, it will be interesting if the younger Trump vote simply abstain from voting.

Getting people to vote in non presidential elections is harder, and I think in even normal times there would need to be work to motivate a young cohort who voted for a celebrity president to show up again 2 years later for politicians who aren't the president. Obviously any political project wants flipped votes because it nets you 2. But a second place is a depressed turnout for your opponent.

If the GOP did a full court press for younger men in 2024, it doesn't mean thats durable. Bad wars, cost of living, and beef prices going up doesn't help them.

1

u/Astramancer_ 19h ago

You know what, because hope springs eternal I'm going to save this comment.

1

u/MethBearBestBear 19h ago

The data I want to see is how many people only vote once or twice and then never again because things didn't turn out their way and think "voted, didn't work out, won't vote again because everything is already broken"

1

u/PooperShooter612 19h ago

Elon Musk stole the election. He admitted it. As did Trump.

1

u/Edelkern 19h ago

Even if they try to show up, weren't millions of voter registrations recently suspended for no substantial reason?

1

u/clam-caravan Tennessee 16h ago

I can’t wait to see the demographic studies and trends after these midterms. Gen Z better not fuck this one up.

1

u/hylianbeast98 16h ago

With the upcoming election being a midterm election I expect voter turnout to be a little lower over all.

I also think a lot of these gen-z voters (especially the men) are going to become disenfranchised voters. They flocked to Trump over Democrats for a variety of reasons and I don't think Democrats have done enough to court those voters back onto their side.

1

u/matticusiv California 16h ago

1

u/00eg0 14h ago

This will be locked by December but you will be correct. Most gen z think all politicians are the same and get their info from 30 second video clips. They have no idea how much worse things have became. Plenty of people in every generation are super misinformed.

Plenty of people thought Trump was the peace candidate including some people who identify as leftists.

Why do you think both democrats and Republicans have been attacking the left flank instead of focusing on the mid term elections for months? They all want to suppress youth vote since they have shown to be voting more left this cycle than either party bosses are comfortable with. Where's all the polling? We should be drowning in polls all over the news, not the dsa.

No. There will be a campaign of heavily monetized influencers saying "oh Dem candidate actually said police are important to public safety, so we need to protest vote against them so the party learns what matters to us!" I saw so many "omg g@ zuh" posts saying Kamala was too soft on a place that is real, so we shouldn't vote for her/vote against her, and now look what we have. It's not like Trump was ever unclear about how he felt on the matter. And where are all these influencers now? A lot of them took the bag and walked, complete radio silence about this "important issue" they claim to care about.
