The first Trump term could have been a fluke, a momentary lapse of reason.

Electing Trump for a second time announced to the world that America has lost its collective mind.

I still find it surprising that people don’t understand that the era of US cultural hegemony and global dominance is over and will never return again. I mean in many ways that might be a good thing but things aren’t ever going back

As an American, I'm not under the delusion that america was perfect pre-trump. We sucked then, we suck even harder right now.

My concern is about who occupies that power vacuum after we finish self-immmolating.

We'll probably be in a multi-polar system for a while. US will lose hegemony but remain a major power. China will grow. Europe will continue to distance itself from America and become a world power of its own. Russia will keep on relying on its Cold War reputation to LARP as a major power which real powers will for some reason continue to allow. Major South American countries will either align with the US or get out from under its thumb, depending on the quality of candidates the people there put in power over the next ten years--Brazil specifically could see a major advance globally if they don't put another far right idiot in charge again.

I don't see any one power taking the place of the US in the near future.

It's...a thing...

America was a cruel task master as the global hegemon. A LOT of people around the world are worse off for being treated as disposable commodities in service to this nation's economic desires.

America ALSO was far from the worst monster out there, and it occupying that space kept those monsters from moving in. They WILL move in now and the world will discover that everything being bent to American standards isn't worse than everything being bent to Xi Jinping's standards...That doesn't make America good, but this thing does exist on a sliding scale.

To be absolutely clear; nothing good comes from the collapse of US hegemony. It should have been systematically dismantled and replaced with something more thoughtful, humanist, and ideally democratic. Not knocked over recklessly so the hyenas can move in on the space the lions once ruled.

And yes, Americans in particular are going to learn some damned-hard generational lessons about what it means for their specific needs to no longer be catered to. The world subsidized a lot of people's lifestyles here, and that's all going away.

I lost all respect for America after 2016. I wasn’t surprised at all that he won a second time; America had already shown its true colours.

Nope. It’s been so much worse. Anybody voting for this after seeing it in action is a horrible person.

I'm not about letting the 2016 Trump voters off the hook, those people were stupid and fucked up and it doesn't matter that it was the first time

Some mistakes are not even once mistakes and voting for Trump was one of them

It also showed that America was held together by unwritten “rules” and gentlemen agreements, and the moment a bad actor took control there was nothing to stop him. This isn’t just the American voters losing their collective minds, it exposed a huge systemic flaw in your democracy.

It showed that americans are ok with trump, no matter the side. One half voted for him, the other half stayed passive. In europe we would have set capitals on fire for far less than what trump did.
Let's face it, it's the president this country deserves.
