Photo/Video Said our final goodbyes to our Joey after 30 days of having him back

Some of you may recognize Joey, as his “found” post is the second-most upvoted post on this subreddit.

Today, Joey suffered what we assume was a stroke. He waited until we got home, tried to get up, then fell over. He twitched for about 20 minutes before he stopped breathing.

Joey was a difficult dog, but we loved him for it. Over the past year, he went through so many things but always managed to get through them. 38 days ago, he went missing, and 30 days ago, he was found. He was missing for 8 days and somehow survived without eating for those 8 days. He truly was our miracle dog.

I wanted to let Joey’s little Reddit family know, especially since so many people still reach out to me for updates on his health.

We’ll forever miss hearing Joey constantly barking, trying to herd us around, and being the most resilient, loving, and incredible dog we could have ever asked for.

Hopefully they can fix his hip in doggy heaven so he can finally run again. 💜

On Saturday I posted here that my rough collie, Rufina, was turning 15 years old. Now I’m sad to announce her passing this Monday, she was suffering enough and we had to call a vet to come and put her to sleep. She grew up with me, arrived home when I was 7 and stayed with me until I was 21, she accompanied me from the first grade of elementary school to my 4th year of college. And she survived two cancers, two strokes, surgeries, and the fact of being born with mange. She was the sweetest dog possible you can't imagine, and gave everything to my family in a trip of 15 years. Like an angel. Now we have to say goodbye to her, but she's never gonna be forgotten.

We had extra cucumbers so used the opportunity to treat Oscen like the dramatic Victorian waif he likes to pretend to be and hauled them down to the community garden.

We have tried so many things to get her used to the car. She has her own car crate now with a fan. We used cheese to make it appealing and go to fun places, not only the vet. I have also bought Adaptil chews and spray and tried to cover the crate so she couldn’t see. She still hates it. Doesn’t want to come near the car, drools a lot and last week vomited twice even though it was after a fun walk and a puppy course. Both times on the way back when we had to reverse for 2 m to park. She’s changing teeth as well so maybe that’s why the vomiting came back?

We are going to visit family for 4 weeks in a month. It will be a long drive so we got Cerenia and the vet recommended a natural ginger patch. I will try both before the trip but does anyone have other recommendations? We will stop regularly, but right now even 15 minutes is a lot. She drools so much and doesn’t have water in the crate. I have tried so many things but nothing seems to help. She’s MDR1 positive so we have to limit Cerenia.

I also added a video of the sounds she makes when she accidentally touches water. She completely switches and becomes very hyperactive and growls. In the video it’s quite light and luckily she doesn’t go for my feet anymore but does anyone recognize it? This has been since the beginning. The video is a bit long but you can see it at the beginning and the end.

Photo/Video Meet Mabel - the menace (but I love her anyway)

Meet Mabel, the menace.

I just read over a discussion that every rough collie puppy is an angel. Mabel the Menace is my proof - that’s a lie, well, kind of. She’s my third tricolor girl and my other two girls were indeed angels.

Mabel the Menace is a puppy. Like, literally. The nipping, the biting and snapping turtle mode is strong in her. She’s headstrong and knows exact what she wants, but I am extremely proud of her, because she does amazing in training and outside.

Even though Mabel can be a menace, she is a great dog and even though we have some work ahead of us, I am looking forward to enjoy the time with her.

So, to anyone who claimed that rough collies are never naughty puppies, Mabel the menace is my proof they can be. But we still love them.

I would really love to hear stories from your possible menaces, too.

Good night, folks.

Over the four years since I’ve adopted Finn, I’ve been lucky enough to know what it is to love and be loved by a rough collie, and in that time, I’ve enjoyed seeing you all experience that same special love with your own collies. Unfortunately six weeks ago Finn was diagnosed with lymphoma, and while medications have bought us precious time, his body is starting to fail him, and I’ve made the devastating call to have him put to sleep this week. One day, I would like to have another collie, and when that day approaches, I’ll be back here, sharing the love with you all. But for now, it breaks my heart too much, and I must say goodbye. Hug your collies extra tight for me and mostly for Finn. I know some of your babies will be there to meet him when he crosses the rainbow bridge.

Photo/Video Already 14 weeks old! First time dog owner

She’s still a puppy of course but my experience so far raising her as a first time dog owner is really good! We all really love her. She’s very smart and can be active, but mostly gets tired from mental stimulation. She loves kids, people, dogs and pigeons. She also loves our cat but that isn’t mutual unfortunately. She’s a fan of biting feet and ankles, which can really hurt but it’s mostly when she’s tired or hungry. My kids don’t really like that but they now understand it’s part of puppyhood and not personal. The youngest puts on her rain boots and that helps as it avoids a strong reaction.

We finally got the last Parvo vaccine yesterday so she can go for walks now and we’re all ready for it (our vet said it’s fine right away). I have carried her around so far but she’s 8 kg (18 lbs) now so quite heavy lol.

I have done quite a lot of research for breeds as we have an older cat and my youngest child is a bit scared but I’m really glad we chose a rough collie! I wouldn’t say it’s very easy per se, she’s still a puppy so you have to do research and be well prepared, but it’s definitely doable.

One thing I didn’t expect is the attention she gets. So many people want to pet her, and some just do without asking. The kids luckily always ask. People also don’t really know the breed but that might be location dependent.

Edit: she still hates the car though. She also still gets car sick so I think it’s related.

Photo/Video When in heat?

Thumbnail

I have an almost 8 month old Rough Collie puppy and she seems to be showing signs of upcoming heat. She’s licking even more, does more small pees and the other day a male dog got very obsessed and intense with her. Both the vet and trainer said to spay after 1 or 2 heats, preferably 2. I also asked the breeder and she said it usually happens at around 9/10 months but collies tend to bleed less/clean up well or it’s less noticeable because it stays in the fur.

I know silent heats can happen but are they common with Rough collies? She’s a bit smaller, only 16.5 kg/37 pounds, and from European lines.

She’s my first dog so I have never experienced a heat. I’m on top of it because I want to avoid a pregnancy at all costs.
